    So the block has Lead as the face? How is it glued to the wood? In your other video you used Gojo to clean the pure wood type. Would you use that on this block as well? I've been reading "General Printing" and the only cleaner they seem to mention so far is Kerosene, should that be avoided or is it strictly for the machines?

      Hi there! Thank you for your questions! This is an old lead block that is adhered to wood (I should have worn a mask). Most metal cuts are glued to the wood, but you might find some with small screws as well. I would not recommend using kerosene, but some printers still do. I prefer to use a tiny drop of odorless mineral spirits to clean up metal cuts like this. Wear gloves (you can develop sensitivity) and only use in a well ventilated area.

    Have you thought about the toxic pigments used in ink, and how when you throw away an ink-soaked rag you are negating the clean-up by introducing the excess pigments into the trash cycle?

    Hints from 50 years of printing - Composing stick. Movable piece is called the knee. The small lever sets the stick to 1/2 pica measure. Use a very light oil like sewing machine oil. Typewriter type has only one size space between words. Em quad. En quad. Commercial typewriters weren't available to the general public until the late 1860s. Need to be a little bit more obsessive about reasons for the different spacing thicknesses, i.e. after punctuation, between letters with more and less white space, &c. Coppers are 1/2 point, brasses are 1 point, certain fonts need a bit of fine spacing (especially Monotype which had to make allowances for fitting the letters to a grid), and almost always on figures. European foundries offer coppers and silver spaces that are 1/4 point. Letters with more white space (example: cow year) need less space, if you have letters occupying more space (example: squeal Pig) you need extra space between the letters. Learn to tie forms, a very good skill to refine. Setting into galley is never a good idea. You will never learn the skills if you don't actually use them. If you had to put your form into a production press you would spend hours sliding brasses and coppers into your lines to attempt to properly justify your lines to each other to lock your form.

    Bill, I'm not sure why you place the side quoin on the left, when you would be feeding the paper to the left? If you have to unlock the form it will be a bit more difficult to get it to register (especially if you are using wooden furniture). One should always place the quoin opposite from the guide edges. General Printing, Cleeton & Pitkin, page 71.

    If you watch carefully, you will notice that he places the Planer face down on the stone. That is very dangerous to do because it can pick up dirt and debris and damage your type when you knock the type down to their feet. It is better to stand the Planer on its edge so that it does not get dirty.
