38spl / 357mag Series Introduction
First video in our series going over the .38 Special reloading procedure and showing off a couple of the firearms we will be using as we cover these two cartridges in depth. As we get the range setup we’ll log real world data for several loads in both cartridges out of several different firearms and barrel lengths. I am not a professional video editor so stick with me and I may get better at it.

    can you see through the scope without putting your eye in reach of the receiver (idk the actual term for the piece?) I want to put a scope on mine but I can't figure out how to do it without having the ejected case going up into the scope. The only way I can think to have it mounted is the way you do, but it seems like it is way too far away from my eyes in a comfortable shouldering position

      @@donaldmartin4980 well by jumping in with a statement solely intended to challenge the configuration of a rifle for absolutely no reason warrants a response of the same caliber. If a scope on a lever action is definitively blasphemous explain the Angle Eject model 94 produced by a manufacturer who is arguably the expert on the platform. Maybe the scope isn’t for you, and that’s fine. I enjoy a good pair of iron sights most days. But this particular rifle was set up for youth/novice shooters to hunt whitetail. And while it is a shorter range cartridge, it is accurate and effective out to 100yds and the scope really helps keep the groups consistent at that yardage. Much the same reason we put optics on pistols and even shotguns. It isn’t blasphemous. It’s just not for everyone.

But I rarely take deer beyond 50yds anymore so if you can keep them this side of 75yds it’s a rifle every hunter should own. Ours are utility guns. • @Lex5576
    @Lex5576 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    At least the connection is tight between barrel and receiver on those Savage guns. The Rossi I bought is loose goose when you break down the barrel. There's all kinds of play in the pin between the barrel and receiver until you put a new round in it and lock it back up in battery. Doesn't change the reliability of the gun, but it annoys the shit out of me. I like all my break action guns to be tight.

    • @chriswoody7702
      @chriswoody7702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was never a great fan of the new single shot Rossi guns. Now my Rossi 92 has been a fantastic, trouble free companion for nearly a decade and has out preformed both Henry and Marlin (new marlin, not the old school ones. No hate for those).

    • @Lex5576
      @Lex5576 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chriswoody7702 Same here with the Rossi 92. I've got the blued version in .357Mag. The action started out kind of rough at first, but it slicked up real nice after a couple hundred rounds. It's a lot more trouble to get back together than my Winchester 73 though. My Rossi 92 was made by CBC, which might explain why it's so rough out of the box. The older Model 92s actually made by Rossi at the old Sao Leopoldo plant were a little better finish. Either way, they're loads of fun to shoot. Now if we could just get .357Mag/.38Special ammo priced down so a working man can buy it.

      @@Lex5576 I’ve got a video here of my 92. It’s been a few years I should update with another. But a few hours with a jeweler’s file and a brass shim and the trigger and loading gate are smooth as butter. From 125gr JHPs SCREAMING at 2200 FPS (strongly recommended only for confident reloaders) to 180gr LCSWC-GC that will drop any deer on this continent out to 100yds; the rifle has replaced everything in my safe as my go to. It’s become an extension of my arm, and between it and my trusty 870 I really don’t need much else. Sure it’s not a 500yd laser like some of my .277” rifles but the older I get the closer I force game before I pull the trigger. And this side of 75yds not much keeps fighting after encountering it. I could go on for days about my affection for the old Rossi.

    • @chriswoody7702
      @chriswoody7702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lex5576 also, I haven’t bought a box of 38/357 in almost the same decade. The Rossi (and all 38/357) is a reloader’s paradise. I was lucky enough to stockpile enough to be able to load for it long after I have left this earth. Unfortunately, because the bigger/faster mentality has taken over; I have very few cohorts who appreciate the cartridge like I do. But I have some loads that really make this rifle (and a properly paired sidearm) a top contender as the greatest brush gun…on this continent anyway.

      @chriswoody7702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely agree. .357magnum is a very versatile and widely under appreciated cartridge across the board. From a rifle it is a great 100yard gun, accurate and packs enough punch to take just about anything in the lower 48 and tough enough to keep in an old farm truck. My daughter took her first buck with mine; ~35 yards, hat trick, one shot it was down in 20 yards. And it is hands down my favorite platform to hand load for. I can easily break 2200fps at the muzzle.

    I recently picked up an R92, 357 mag, hex 24" barrel in excellent condition for a mere $400. An added bonus was that it was owned since new by a police armourer who had waved a magic wand over it, fitted Marbles tang and front sights and had seen very little use. Absolutely love it. It shoots everything with great accuracy. A true keeper. If you can find one, buy it.

    • @charlyromeo7926
      @charlyromeo7926 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Needs special loads thought. Other wise that length of the barrel can be a drawback using pistol ammo that is designed to maximize the performance of the today's defence 3"-5" pistols at 6-7 yrds range while minimizing the the flash. Slowest burning powders like AA7 and the heaviest ...and highest BC.. 357 bullets above .200 can make that 92 a 500 yrs rifle easily. If you are up to the task.
