Allinaire makes electronic music and video using Monome, Max, Eurorack, Serge, Buchla & LZX modular synthesisers. He also uses field recordings, ‘found sounds’ and repurposed instruments processing them and working with both ‘musical’ and abstract sounds and rhythms usually recorded live, some of which are then deconstructed then reconstructed in the Laboratory of Ableton Live and Monome Norns to give form to Allinaire's ‘lab+strakt' music.

Allinaire Korg PS3200 (PS3300 Emulation MAM RS3 Res) MS50 MS20 MS10 VC10 Vocoder SQ10 Seq SE500 Echo
As a huge Korg fan I got to put together an Ensemble piece using 1978 era Korg Synths. The hero is the mighty PS3200 polyphonic synth playing homage to its big brother (and, as of 2024, soon to be re-released by Korg, the PS3300) by using the direct out of the 3200 into a MAM RS3 Resonator which recreates the famous PS3300 & 3100 modulated resonator circuit. The 3200 plays pads, base and noises.
Lead lines and extra pads via an MS20 into a VC10 Vocoder combo give a haunting breathy sound.
The SQ10 Sequencer drives the MS50 and MS20 synths for a rhythmic sequence and the MS10 with its famous pulse width modulation provides additional baselines.
Effects include the SE500 Tape Echo and the more modern Kaos Pad Mini.
All recorded on a Zoom R24 recorder.
Percussion utilises some sounds sampled from the various Korg Synths and is added in Ableton Live.
Recorded in April 2024, Wollongong courtesy of Jondent, with some additional sounds from my own original MS20 in Sydney.
The Video is mixed together bits of footage from the session but missed most of the playing and modulation action - but still it’s always nice to see some vintage Korg gear in action!
Additional notes: Some subtle detuning of the PS3200 individual notes was made possible via the Temperament Adjust mini pots. The PS3010 keyboard also provides for some interesting modulation effects via the joystick and the unique note triggering control. A Korg 3100 in the same studio verified the RS3 Resonator accuracy and the RS3 unit also is CV controllable like on the 3300. By using it with the PS3200 (which has 2 oscillators per note) it gets close to the functionality of a PS3300 but of course misses the fact that the 3300 has 3 Oscillators and 3 resonators etc. I look forward to the new PS3300FS announced by Korg at NAMM 2024.

ALLINAIRE - Mandelbrot vs Buchla 259e
มุมมอง 5113 ปีที่แล้ว
In this piece the Mandelbrot set ‘plays’ a Buchla 259e and friends (including various Max-for-Live devices). The 259e is my favourite Buchla oscillator as it contains a wealth of tones varying from a simple sine wave to chaotic digital noise - which kind of represents what happens to the points within and around the Mandelbrot set. With a 259e you can make a ton of sounds ranging from pure and ...

Erica Syntrx vs EMS VCS3 The Putney (Part Two)

Part 2 of the Comparison demos between the Erica Synths Syntrx and the EMS Synthi models (Synthi AKS and VCS3 - The Putney). Loving this - dance-able abstract EDM improv - the new Prog Rock?
Absolutely Genius! - I would love to include something like this in DGS project if you are up for a collaboration????
The Synthi is on a whole other level…. It’s a dream instrument. You could take one of those with a tape machine and make the most incredible record! I have been slowly acquiring gear for a long time and eventually I’m going to sell it all at once and pick one up. That matrix with the .33 volts thing is a big part of the charm. The light bleed thru on the patch bay with the voltage threshold makes true magic happen. It’s gorgeous sound on top of that IMO makes it the greatest readily portable synth of all time.
Really nice 👍
4:22 Welcome my son, Welcome to the machine !
sick
Thanks Joey. Love your work!
oh shit ok I saw the percussion part at the bottom. so genius.
omg this is the thickest sound on the earth. what's doing the drums? this is one of the greatest tracks ever. great job.
Thanks, was cool to use them all together. The drums are a mixture of Korg Synth samples and other sound bits I had lying around, I sequenced them seperately.
Outrageous!
What a bunch of snobbery going on this thread.
There is a bit! I reckon the Syntrx is an excellent re-imagining of the Synthi - they never claimed it was a clone and it has its own strengths and weaknesses, just like every other bit of kit.
Would love to see a three way match between the vintage EMS VCS3, Erica Syntrx II and Analogue Solutions Ample! EMS VCS3 prices are sky high nuts right now.
Neither is worth a fraction of the price from what i hear here. Could do those sounds with anything.
Only a SYNTHI IS good 😂🎉
Sounds like a toy compared to the real deal
Fair enough. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that point. It doesn't sound the same for sure, but it is excellent in its way.
@@Allinaire there’s room for both to exist for sure.
Nice visuals and lovely patching ❤
you can send the meter column back into the Vcs3 . It's just reversed in polarity. So anything in there can be sent back input the vcs3 via meter to high input.
Can I get your current full address please? 😛
nice track man 😗
Jesus....at about 4 mins in!! Not sure I've heard a synth come over quite so fat on TH-cam.. especially through phone speakers
Wonderful sounds and a beautiful setup!
Thanks for watching /listening
11:40 is what we ALL came here for .
Does it provide babel fish? Sounds like it.
This one of the wildest things I've heard in awhile. Sign me up for more!
Thanks! More Live Strakt performances coming soon.
best video with this module
The AKS could "operate" one oscillator with the sequencer so it would play a repeating melody. And then you could play the other osc yourself with the keyboard. Can the Syntrex do that too? With on two Midi channels?
You could do it on CV but not MIDI as far as I know
Impressive sounds! Thanks for this thorough comparison.
Was is possible to play your VCS3 Putney with the DK1 keyboard? Or was that only possible with later VCS3 models?
I believe it IS possible to use the DK1 keyboard to control the Putney. I don't own that and have not tried it myself.
@@Allinaire Thanks. I'm waiting for Behringer's version and I'm looking into the VCS3's way of "handling" a keyboard. Appears to be kinda difficult as the sequencer from the Synthi AKS (you know: the one in a attache case w/ a keayboard/sequencer in the lid) could be used separate from the keyboard. That is: the sequencer would play a sequence on oscillator 1 and you could play a solo over that w/ the keyboard on osc. 2! How nice was that, eh?
Hi @Allinaire, I was wondering if you were still thinking of making the third part of comparison of syntrx to vcs3?
The plan is to do it eventually - but it has taken a back seat to lots of other stuff I've been doing recently. Maybe when we get hold of Syntrx 2 - a shoot out between the 3 !
Syntrx is a joke, souless, sound remind me a cheap monosynth who pass in a decent spring reverb....
The old one sounds definitely better, warmer, richer and rounder no doubt 👍 the reverb is crazy good too… but the price it’s so high that the new one start to get interesting
Hello, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you are still planning to release part 3?
Cheers, yes still possible - but life and other priorities got in the way. I may try and get a Syntrx 2 and do a 'Part 3' including that.
I just discovered this master piece today and my neurons are on fire. Impressive demonstration of creativity and simplicity. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening!
What I like about the Putney is you can feel it trying.
Thats a great description of it actually!
O.m.g. 🤯😯!!
how can i get the faderbank and the arc?
I believe the ARC is now discontinued? But there are some DIY options available. Faderbank is also a DIY thing, but for both the FB and ARC there are builders out there that will sell you a completed unit. Check on Modwiggler to start with.
@@Allinaire ty..and how the faderbank is connected to other devices? in your video.
@@sashaatree6535 It is connected via usb to the Norns/fates - same like the ARC. The Norns/Fates has 4 usb sockets for attaching controllers etc.
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Beautiful stuff! I picked up a norns shield recently and have quickly discovered the importance of the record function for building more complex pieces like this and layering in sounds from other apps. Never really understood that just from watching tutorials and stuff before actually using it. I love the sense of tactile satisfaction and invitation to experimentation and discovery that these devices provide
Thanks for those comments. Yes, Im a big fan of recording my jams directly on Norns itself and then reusing them, especially granularly. And you are absolutely right, once you add controllers like Grid, Arc and Faderbank to Norns it becomes an incredibly expressive 'instrument'.
Now, THIS is the stuff. I gotta play catch-up.
Thanks Kent, Im a fan of yours too!
Thank you for sharing this 'on the fly' performance! It was very interesting to see and listen to, because there were so many sounds / snippets that drew the attention. Maybe the visuals could've matched the performance better if they weren't so fast paced but I do understand why these were the ones they chose.
Thanks for that, I appreciate your comments. Getting the visuals more on point is certainly something id like to work on - but the reality is that mostimes the visuals are performed independently. We should at least try to clock them into sync but not always possible. I've experimented doing my own visuals simultaneously but it is just too much work and too much to concentrate on when performing live.
This actually really cool. Looks like a lot of fun to play with.
It really is! Nice compact setup too. The apps in Norns are really powerful and a lot of fun to experiment with.
EMS VCS - this is musical instrument with surround sound, deep and musical; but what we see next to him, - a toy with a thin rasping sound, blurry sound, like noise from a portable radio
Yeah, I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that one. It's true they are not the same but both have their own character and I believe both have an excellent sound palette. Given most people are unlikely ever to own an original VCS then I'll happily take the Syntrx as a alternative option.
Thats wild dude. Whats the name of those silver knobs? They look nice <3
Thanks! Thats the Monome ARC - Fantastic High resolution controller that works with various Norns Apps and max for Live etc.
yes sir, i like it.
The ring mod into the reverb was definitely giving me Out Of The Unknown vibes, so sadly shall have to part with a large wad of cash and acquire one.
but this comparison is made using the speakers of the 2 machines and shooting with the microphone of the camera ?? if so it doesn't seem like a fair comparison ... too many variables
Not quite - both units were running through the same amp and external speakers - so from that point of view it is as fair as it can get with such a non scientific test. Admittedly recording was only via camera mic but it's not bad - and again, both are recorded the same. This video was meant as an indicative comparison, there were few, if any, other like comparisons at the time it was made so it has been useful to many - as it was to me.
love it
Thanks!
Very Nice
Cheers!
Where you from, man?
I'm in Sydney
Greets from Lismore. I love this. Even with gear failure. Sounds like a pretty complex rig! We do something a bit similar up here. What's the strength of the Monome, for you?
@@tybowesformerlygoat-x7760 I'm a Big Monome fan - loads of cool apps and hardware options. Play it standalone or with other gear via midi and cv.
@@Allinaire thanks man. Will check it out.
