Horti-BlueC Public Engagement Event at Southsea Castle
In conjunction with the Portsmouth Climate Festival, the public event included a summary of key research findings from the University of Portsmouth research project Horti-BlueC. Horti-BlueC has developed a sustainable and peat-free recycled compost blend for growing tomatoes, strawberries and other greenhouse crops. The new blend has been designed to reduce carbon emissions associated with food production, and so help to achieve climate targets and tackle climate change.
This family-oriented event offered an opportunity to find out about the project results and listen to short talks from University of Portsmouth researchers on topics such as the health benefits of tomatoes and consumer attitudes to 'green' labelling.

Growing strawberries on innovative substrates with climate-friendly alternatives to peat
มุมมอง 10K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Strawberries grown on innovative substrates - with compost, biochar, chitin and wood fibers - grow just as well as they do on traditional substrates, which contain a lot of peat. This means that in the relatively short term, the sector can become even more climate-friendly and even more circular than it already is. In the European Horti-BlueC project, research centers ILVO, Hoogstraten and othe...

At The Charles Viollette Research Institute for Food and Biotechnologies and the University of Lille, an enzyme assisted extraction of chitin from shrimp shells has been developed. In this video the pilot scale process is explained. Chitin is a promising environmental-friendly alternative for mineral fertilizers and chemical plant protection in soilless cultivation. In the Horti-BlueC project, ...

Horti-BlueC: towards a more sustainable and circular soilless horticulture
มุมมอง 3164 ปีที่แล้ว
Currently, horticulture generates a lot of hard-to-recycle waste, such as spent growing media. Among others, this waste may contain a high concentration of nutrients and pesticide residues. Horti-BlueC proposes to substitute non-renewable feedstock materials such as white peat or stone wool with locally-produced, renewable feedstock materials. Horti-BlueC website: www.horti-bluec.eu/en
Horti-BlueC - Introduction Part 1
มุมมอง 1484 ปีที่แล้ว
The materials that are currently used in growing media are not sustainable. Peat and stone wool are not renewable and the production of stone wool is energy-demanding as well. Although peat has many advantages for use in growing media, its extraction from pristine peatlands threatens these sensitive ecosystems and carbon sinks, meanwhile resulting in increased emissions of greenhouse gasses. Ho...

Can't we use shrimp shells to dry and turn them into powder without removing minerals and proteins with chemicals?

Basically the exoskeleton of crustaceans (shrimp, prawns, crabs, etc) made up of chitin along with minerals like calcium carbonate and several proteins, and this can be not utilise by plants as it is complex compound, to be utilised by plants it has to be simple from that's why it is important to dimeneralize and diproteinize in order to get chitin from crustaceans shell

If you have a lot of wastage from shrimp heads, legs and shells, it could be extra business for you to boil these to make a concentrated stock for adding to seafood dishes. Sell small bottles to local restaurants to start with and see what the chefs think. See my earlier video from today.

I buy 250g of whole cooked prawns from the fishmonger and peel them. I used to discard the heads, but now I freeze them and later make a rich stock for adding to shrimp soup. The stock really adds flavour. I simmer the heads in a small amount of water, then drain the stock through a muslin bag.

Science habitually extracts elements from nature so they can sell the pure element to industry for combining with other products for patenting. Anyone who lives near the sea knows that whole seaweed or sea creature can be used for growing crops. I ordered some fertilizer and compost from the Coast of Maine product line recently, and was excited to see that they use various shells from crustaceans, along with other sea products, and not extracts. There is more in the whole shell than can be derived from one or two extracts for plant growth. As in herbs, the whole herb works synergistically for balance in health. When only one aspect of that herb is used, the balance is lost.
