Haha, avoiding 19,000 feet of climb for 9’.. I rode Sanibel back in April with a buddy who lives there. Enjoyed the ride. I will be doing Ragbrai in a few weeks with the greatest amount of climb they have ever planned.

Great video Terry, Elgin is a great little town. My grandparents farmed SE of town and we visited often, most of our time was spent on the farm but we would also go to town. We’d swim at the pool, have picnics in the park go to Vetch Days, football soap scrimmages, etc. I didn’t grow up there but I still have great memories of the town they call Elgin.

I have been riding the Heartland/Paul Bunyan trails since the 1980s. I recognized every camera shot in your video. Its always fun to see what other people pick out as interesting spots in these trail videos. Yes, the hilly section of the Paul Bunyan trail going through the Chippewa National Forest can be a challenge! I have seen deer and black bears in that forest. You have to be careful zooming downhill. After some storms there can be downed trees across the path. But you had a great day and no problems.

Always remember on a rails the trails ride along the river one end is higher than the other. Starting in Cannon Falls riding to Red Wing. It is a slight but steady downhill. It feels great, you feel great. It’s a really fun ride. On the other hand, the 20 mile ride back all uphill Can be a bit of work. It’s just about imperceptible you don’t notice it maybe until mile 15. If in doubt start in Red Wing and ride to Cannon Falls.

agree this was my 3rd straight year.. Each year has had its own challenges, and I would say it was my last time.. This year I have no doubts it will be my last time ever doing it again. It about ruined me on cycling or group/organized rides. Its taken me most of the summer to get back to a routine of riding. A weeklong of RAGBRAI is not for everyone, it is hard.. Its long days, its a lot of miles over and over, its hot and IOWA is not flat.

You didn’t miss much entering Slater with that big crane. They hung the flag backwards. 🤦🏼🤬

I heard about the ride 2 weeks ago, via a TH-cam channel. My goal is couch to RAGBRAI '24. Thankfully we have an RV and my Husband is very willing to be my support team. This video was helpful. Thank you for all of them.

I tried riding the Ames to Des Moines day. I made it to Madrid and had to tap out. I just couldn’t take the heat.

Well done! You said a lot of the things we’re all thinking: it was not as enjoyable as it could have been- and that was 100% about heat and crowds. It was still awesome- and WAY more of a challenge than I expected.

I've watched several channels covering RAGBRAI. You guys are my favorite. I don't see how in the name of everything that's holy you made it with that terrible heat and humidity. Best wishes to you both ✌️

Congrats.....we did it. With the gearing on my bike, I knew that walking a hill was a possibility, so my goal was to finish. Walked three short hills and finished every day by 11:30-1pm. I wanted to meet Ryan, BBB, and you both and never got to Ryan. He was swarmed everywhere. I saw him and met you both at the bike expo. I was in contact with Brentley and MB pretty much every day. I think we hopped over each other all day, I just didn't recognize your bike kits. The early morning departures made a huge difference in the rides people had. If we would of left later, then every single thing we wanted or saw would have been a line. Like Brentley said, they waited 1.5 hours for a beer at a place I had no line. Also, lots of people walked hills just because the whole road had slowed and no lane to ride in. Ugh, that would have been awful. It will be interesting to see how many people come back for another ride if they were newbies on the 50th. Even experienced riders of Ragbrai were admitting they tapped out this year. Thank you for creating these videos. We chatted along the route this yers, my first RAGBRAI. I thought the ride was challenging, mostly because of the heat, but I loved every minute of it. When I rolled into towns, they seemed familiar to me as 8 have seen many of the vendors in your videos. When I was in the planning stages, I would zoom in on the vendor menus to see prices to help with budgeting. I followed your advice & left early each morning, thank you for that. If I left later it would have been a whole different ride due to the heat

My first Ragbrai. It was hard but I still loved it. You are the second TH-camrs I watched who run marathons and said this year's Ragbrai was tougher than marathons. Makes me feel even more accomplished. I did every mile too, and same goal achieved of no walking up hills. I tell everyone that the riding was tough because of the heat but it's the logistics and camping in the heat that was the most difficult. I had no tent service, so after riding 100 miles in the heat I would then have to find bags and put tent up in direct sunlight in some campsites with heat index over 100. Still happy I did it. It was a grueling year. I also chose not to walk up any hills and I did not. Although I did it a little different. I would stop part way up if I could not make it, take a short break and let the heart rate come back down and then take off again. I know that starting back up on a hill is not the most desirable way to do it, but it worked for me. I ended up taking the SAG wagon 2 times. Once on Friday after half way through the ride. I made it to Mr. Pork Chop where I had some slushy lemonade (no it was not Sassy) and a break under a tree for some shade. I actually fell asleep for a shot time. The SAG wagon was out front and asked it anyone wanted to SAG. I told myself no and got on the bike. I made it about 30 yards and my body said no way. I turned around and took the SAG wagon to Coralville IA. My body was just spent. The second time I had a mechanical failure with my rear tire. I run tubeless and the side wall of the tire failed. I made a repair with the help of two gentlemen from Australia. I got back on the road near Buffalo IA (about 8 miles from Davenport IA) found a lemonade stand for some hydration, rode to the fire station to fill up the water bottles and then began my trek to the dip site. About 1/2 mile down the road the back tire went flat again. I had called for my family to come get me, but they could not find an access to get onto the road since everything was blocked off for RAGBRAI. Just then the SAG wagon drove by and gave me the thumbs up or down and I did the thumbs down. They stopped and I was so grateful. The SAG crew was happy to pick me up and said that this is what the SAG service is for. You made it almost to the end, have a mechanical failure and just not able to complete the day. He said that there were many people that would ride to the 1st pass through town and give up and SAG to the overnight town on a daily basis. He said on Monday there were 10,000 people that used the SAG service and the majority of them did not even ride at all that day. Glad the two of you completed each day. That is quite the accomplishment for the weather that was handed us this year. Keep Riding!!!

I’m enjoying your videos from RAGBRAI. I had hoped to be riding my 10th time this year but an injury kept me off the bike. Keeping cool can be tough especially if you are not used to the temps. Looks like you are doing fine!

Getting close to the end and back to a real bed and private showers. "Last year, we loved it, and this year, we hated it." I was up till 1 am helping people with their tents and knocking on doors trying to find lodging for people who lost or flooded their tents. Day seven, you had small crowds on the video. You must have got an earlier start. Those roller bladers were fun to watch. Day 7, my hand and bottom were killing me with pain. Have you been back on the bikes much since getting home? Yay for tbe tire dip. We had some hills in Davenport getting back to the buses as well. Was nice to shower, then get a ride across the state. I'm looking forward to the recap video don't make us wait too long ;-).

Great video series! I like how positive your videos are. That was one week that was NOT easy! I am going to ride the whole ride next year. I noticed in the tent cities, I don't see many bikes. Where do you store your bikes overnight. Do you lock up your bikes when stopping in towns or overnight?

I had the same Husker jersey on that day. You are insanely early to bed and early to ride. Sirens went off 30-45 minutes before dark. Main campground we went back to our tents around 10. Only those who lost their tents were inside for the night.

Seems like I missed some things with the early starts but sure didn't regret getting off the bike each day. My saddle sore was getting bad and the hand was going numb.i could hear how tired you were when you said "here is what lunch is today ....sandwhiches breakfast of champions". Lol. This was a tough a day. Be well.

Great video and sure wish I knew the high trestle was open. I missed the slip and slide but did do the polar dip just before the stage. Our camp ground was in the middle of the field behind yours. Not sure how I didn't notice you two each day on the bikes.

Good work finishing the ride it was a tough one!

I have a verse about day 5 in the recap poem I wrote! We left early also…beat the heat Day 5 we had dreaded all of the week, With nearly a mile of climb. We knew we had to beat the heat, So we left at the five AM time. The hills, the hills, they mocked us all day, But with exertion we were able to pass. Except for the hill right out of Colfax That one just flat kicked my ass! But as Tama did near, the route flattened out “Can’t leave ninety on the table,” said I. So we hatched a wild and crazy idea Let’s add ten and bag a century ride!

This was a tough day, but Friday is the one that got to me on those last hills going in to Coralville. it was just so HOT ! Nice video. This 66 year old managed not to walk any hills either. I stoppped for pie to keep me going on this day.

All those small towns you pass thru, its their "super bowl sunday" for the year. After all the riders towards the end of the line are gone, the residence must have an empty feeling knowing the last of the riders means its over till the next time they may get chosen to be part of the next RAGBRAI. The people of Iowa are genuine good people.
