1KHO 148: We Are Scrolling Our Lives Away | Heath Wilson & Joey Odom, Aro Co-Founders
Welcome to the latest episode of our podcast, where we explore ways to bring more joy and connection into our daily lives. Today, we're thrilled to chat with Heath Wilson and Joey Odom, the founders of Aro - a company dedicated to helping families put down their phones and spend quality time together.
The conversation starts with a surprising statistic - screen time has become the biggest battleground in families today, overtaking drugs, sex, and alcohol. But instead of dwelling on the negative, Heath and Joey share inspiring stories of families who have successfully disconnected from their screens and reconnected with each other.
They highlight the importance of giving our loved ones our full attention and in that way bestow value on them. They share practical tips on how we can break the habit of mindless scrolling and focus on what truly matters.
The founders of Aro also remind us that time is precious and we don't realize how little of it we have with the people we love. But the good news is that with the right tools and mindset, we can make the most of our time together and create lasting memories.
The conversation ends on a hopeful note as Heath and Joey emphasize that we're not alone in this struggle. They assure us that by taking small steps to disconnect and recharge, we can cultivate stronger and happier relationships with our families.
Join us in this uplifting conversation with the founders of Aro, and discover how you can bring more joy and connection into your own family life.
Aro is offering our listeners a discount to get a free month on the upfront annual or two-year memberships with the code “1000hours”. If you are looking to spend more time with your family, model great habits for your kids, keep them safe, or maybe just fall asleep without scrolling, we encourage you to check out Aro right now at www.goaro.com .

We did Sliding Rock two times. Once in late 1999’s and again in early 2000’s. It was so much fun. That was way back before we knew cold plunging was healthy lol. You hit that 45 degree pool of water at the bottom and it sucks the air out of your lungs! But then your body is warmed for the entire time unless you take a break and your body gets cold again. It was better than any roller coaster.

I remember when i had the iphone3 and was playing with my kid and i got a text message and stopped what i was doing to pick up the phone, read and respond etc. when i put it back down (this phone had a mirror back with apple logo on it) as i set it down i saw my reflection right with the apple logo and thought back to Eve taking a bite of the apple… which just struck be back then that this temptation of entertainment, attention etc. could be detrimental to us. Ever since then i have made times of day to be away from my phone and just live in reality with others. Many friends and colleagues have made note how they feel i am a good listener or they feel close to me naturally. I believe it could be due to my phone being in my car or bag most of my life. Most of us were not raised with these distractions and we have not had time to evolve to it.

This was a really great interview. Joel Salatin, of course, was great. He has such a wonderful personality and so much knowledge and wisdom. But, I liked how you, Virginia, (I’m sorry, I didn’t catch if you go by a nickname other than that), brought up different quotes of his from his books, and you tied the teachings of the Bible to things on your farm, such as the Morning Glory’s. Thank you.

Boredom feels like a failure because we know their childhood is lacking from how ours were. No kids to play with outside anymore. We're all disconnected from our immediate community now, working all the time. It's hard to connect with neighbors, and families are more spread apart. We have lost our village.
