Reflections from a Plant Hobbyist - Social Media Burnout - Repot & Chat
Hello Friends, Repot with me as I chat about burnout. After a year on Instagram, I decided it was time to say goodbye-for now. Social media burnout crept in, and I realized it was affecting my love for plants and content creation. In this video, I reflect on my journey, what led to this decision, and the lessons I've learned along the way. Grab a cup of tea or repot a plant while we chat.

Thanks for being here.
Did you just say you don't like free mystery plants. Or maybe you coughed and we heard something different. Lol
Hahaha! I said I didn’t like mystery plants. It’s too much of a mystery to me. 😂
💚
Thanks for being here.
Very interested in this topic 💚
Me too. I did some research into this and I was very surprised of the info I found. Now, I will be doing a 90 day update.
💚
Thank you!
Good for you with pulling back. And AWESOME job with the crochet! Keep texting me pics!
It's weird not being on the app but I have so much plans now. Heading to get more yarn today. LOL!
💚
You got it!
for me i cure social media burnout by buying plants in my wishlist . lol. try it its very effective.
Thank you for talking about this! 💚 Definitely would like an update on how you’re doing after 90 days and how you’ve taken advantage of the extra time 😊 An update on the monstera also 🙏
So far I'm looking for unfinished projects to do in the house. LOL! Thanks for watching and being here.
Ha I don’t make content but the spazzy arm movements are so relatable. That’s a daily feature for me.
Hahaha, my husband says I talk will my hands. 🙌
@ is there another way to talk? i don’t know any other way haha
How do you protect your joy in the things you love?
Thank you for sharing your plant life on U2 and congrats on your first year! 🎉❤. I started after I loss someone close. I’ve always had a couple of plants; but my mother was a real plant mom. I wish that I had loved them like I do now when she was here. 11:52
Thank you and thank you for being here. I am sorry for your loss. It's beautiful how plants have become a way for you to connect with that memory and love for your mother. I'm sure she would be proud of the way you've embraced that part of her legacy now.
Thanks for the updates!
Thank for being here. :)
I'm just about to try this! I'm gonna use coco mix with perlite and a deeper tub than you did as maybe that'll help give more aielfow/space between the plant and the "dome"
Perlite would be better. Mine rotted and it was in moss. No airflow. I will be trying this again this year. Let me know how yours goes?
@mixonplantsncrafts I will do! I just put them in yesterday (coco perlite mix) I'm excited to see how they go!
What's in the no drainage glasses
Alocasia azlanii and zebrina,
thanks, i mean the media?@mixonplantsncrafts
@ oh oh, chunky soil mix and the very bottom is leca.
@mixonplantsncrafts thank you very much😀
Yay, I love your unboxing/repot/update videos! Yeah, it’s funny how right after we express some disappointment, fate decides to prove us wrong 😄 Where do you keep your Cuprea and how much light is it getting? Because those leaves look like they’re trying to run away from too much light (or maybe there’s a light source under the pot that is attracting them) - not yellowing or floppy, just twisting down away or towards something. The anthurium looks good. If you have two already and you don’t need this one, maybe you can swap with someone or sell it or giveaway? I like the leaves on the second Hoya (forgot the name) the veins are so dark and prominent! Hope they grow well for you ❤️
I’m glad you like these. Hoping the next one have way more growth. lol! Not sure what wrong with the cuprea and the leaves. Maybe too rootbound. I’ll repot once the new leaf comes out. Thanks for being here friend.
I agree that the cuprea looks like it's getting too much light.
@ Thanks ladies, I did move it out of the cabinet and gave it a heat mat as well.
@mixonplantsncrafts Cool, maybe in monthly updates let us know if that helps 😊
Beautiful! I’ve had my Hoya compacta for 2 years and no blooms. They have grown a lot of foliage!! And I’ve even propagated them. No blooms. 😢
I know it’s hard with no blooms. Mine is rootbound and gets alot of light. I also make sure I water on time even though I’m an under waterer. I treat this one like a princess. 🤩
This is pretty cool!
I'm 48 and started TH-cam last year! Thank you for sharing your journey, I'm about to reach my anniversary and I'm planning a one year reflection myself, that's how I found this. Keep up the good work!
That’s awesome! I love watching one year reflection videos. It gives me insight on how others think of TH-cam. I’ll look out for your reflection. Thank you for being here.
@mixonplantsncrafts Thanks so much. I have a minor fascination with plants too. I managed to set up a planted fish tank, it was so much work and I got a cat so I took it down. I keep a good amount of (cat friendly) plants around the house and work. I'll be checking out your normal content. Thanks for checking in!
Those containers look so great, I wouldn’t have guessed they were ice buckets and not pots! 😄 Not having to water as often when you have so many plants is a big plus, hope it works out well for you! The only no drainage experience I have is with smaller plants in perlite or LECA. And since semi-hydro needs flushing, I found it a bit impractical since I had to fill and tip over and the roots got disturbed often. I think a no drainage setup would work well for me as a temporary solution, until the mineral buildup and algae gets to be too much for me
I thought about adding a single hole to the side of the pot for flushing. I can totally do that if I'm using LECA or PON later. I hope it works out too. :)
@ Yeah, that could be a solution, if it comes to it 👍🫶
If I had any velvety plants, I’d definitely touch them too much 😄 The one in my home that I do like to touch is my asparagus fern. It’s so fluffy 🥰 And I’m waiting for my fuzzy crassula propagation to grow for that reason 🤭
I’m looking forward for your fuzzy Crassula too 😆
Congratulations on the anniversary! 🎉 My journey into plant care started about a year and a half ago but there were always plants around me in my life. Until I was 7, we lived in my paternal grandparents’ house and they had a big garden, vegetables in the back and grape vines and mostly spring bulb flowers in the front, as well as a couple of fig trees. My grandma also had pelargoniums and some sedum varieties in outdoor pots and later acquired a peace lily and maranta as presents. They always looked so full and I never saw her do anything special to them besides watering and repotting them. My mom used to have a tiny jungle corner when we lived in our sunniest apartment but was never really good at it and has since given up the hobby. Then, when I moved for university, I lived with my then boyfriend at his mom’s place and she had plants everywhere and I would care for them while she was on holiday. Then I moved out and tried having houseplants of my own but they didn’t last long. Until fall of 2023. My son and I spent the summer with my parents in my late paternal grandparents’ house, where they now live with my maternal grandma. She likes having plants but due to health issues she can’t take care of them anymore, so I did that for her. At the end of summer she gave me a basic anthurium (flamingo flower) and that’s what I consider the start of my plant journey. It’s funny how this connects back to my very early childhood when I lived in that same house. If I have to self-analyse, I guess it was a yearning to go back to that time, when I always seemed to have dirt under my fingernails and played on a blade of grass between my thumbs (it makes a sound when you blow on it 😅). Now I dream of having a house of my own, with a garden and enough space for houseplants. Sorry for the essay 😅 Love you and appreciate you so much for making me think about stuff like this 🫶
What a beautiful story and thank you so much for sharing it! I love how your plant journey has such deep roots in your childhood and family history. It's s so special that your grandma’s anthurium sparked this plant journey it’s like a little piece of your family’s legacy living on with you. I want to get some houseplants that remind me of my childhood. It’ll be a great way for my mom and me to share the joy together. I hope you get that house with a garden and plenty of space for all the plants your heart desires! Love you too, and I’m so glad to share in your story.
Awwwww! Congrats on a year! That's a great accomplishment! I also started "collecting" in 2021, but I grew up with plants in the house. And I always had a few plants in my apartments and such. But in 2021, I decided I wanted to acquire the plants I remembered from my childhood home...and that started with a dieffenbachia and an asparagus fern! Then it snowballed into my current collection of 180 (give or take).
Thanks for sharing. Do you still have those 2021 plants? I love the look of an asparagus fern. I love having stories connecting us to plants. I want to get some childhood plants as well this year. Although, I can’t grow a cashew tree in the house. 😀🤣
@mixonplantsncrafts I do have most of them, yes!
Thank you for sharing your plant journey with us. I have always had 2-3 plants since my early 20s however in 2016 we moved out of our home state, we knew no one so my plant collection grew slightly. Then April 2020 we moved back to our home state (California). My collection tripled or maybe quadrupled during that period, I now I too have over 100 plants. I lost my mom December 2022, she loved plants. Caring for my plants now makes me feel so close to my mom. In fact last night I was thinking I need to do with my Begonia Maculata- she is straggly and the leaves are small. The Begonia was gifted to me at my mom’s funeral service. This morning I get on TH-cam and your video pops up and you’re holding your begonia maculata 🥺😭. Plants have a way of helping you through or just helping you cope with life. Again, thank you for sharing your journey. But getting back to your beautiful Begonia Maculata - what is your secret to such a lush begonia?😍 congratulations 🎉 on your 1 yr anniversary!
Thank you for being here and sharing about your story. I’m also sorry for your loss. Plants have a remarkable way of being present and supportive during difficult times. I love how plants are always there. For your Begonia Maculata, I recommend using a self-watering pot, ensuring good lighting, and propagating when the plant becomes leggy. I'm currently propagating a single leaf stem to replant in the same pot. They grow so fast for me.
Amazing!!!
Thank you so much 😊
Oh girly I hope this works for you. For some reason mine don’t do well in no drainage. I moved all mine back out for the most part. Alos like it anthuriums not so much. Just my experience. I found using drainage with a cache pot is what’s worked best for me. I also fertilize weekly and I think it not having a means to flush worked against me. 😭 when they are small I may use no drainage but once they size up at the rate they need repotting the cache pot has worked best. 💚💚💚 I also top all Ariel’s with moss until next repot.
I’ve been struggling so much with watering ever since Lobo got sick. I really hope it works out without drainage. I hardly ever flush my plants anymore. If I do see a plant struggling, I feel like just adding some drainage holes to the sides of the pot-while the plant is still in it! 🤣
Love those pots
I love them too. What else can I repot in them ? 🤣
@ lol sooo many!! Haha propagation would look super pretty too
I did that and mine rebelled.
Oh! Let’s see how this will go. Plant care is alot of experimenting 🤣
I need a King. And I like those pots for you. I LOVE using my thrifted glass, but yeah, they can get heavy!
I need a queen. If I want find more thrifted glass these are thicker would be great. 😊
❤
graft
Noted 🤣
Finally! A concise solution with something i already have laying around. Thanks! My friend gave me clip on lights that she didn’t want. I thought I didn’t have anything to clip it on. Looks like I do. Now I can get on with what I was really doing 🫡
Awww, I love that. I never have anything sturdy enough for them but that scrap board get helps so much. 🙌
What a fun idea! Feel free to ignore me because I know you are not a hair channel but I love your hair. The way the gray blends with the dark is so beautiful. I started getting gray in the front and it’s made me more aware of how other people manage their gray. I am hoping that my gray will grow in as beautifully as yours.
Haha! Thank you for the compliment on my hair! I decided to let it go natural back in 2020. I got highlights to help with the transition, and I’m so glad I did-it’s one less thing to worry about now. Good luck with yours! 🙌
@ thank you! Highlights for the transition makes a lot of sense! I’ll keep that in mind when it’s time. I think I’ll go natural gray too eventually but I have light brown hair and I have yet to see a smooth transition for light brown and gray 😭
@@jhreader I feel like black demarcation line was terrible but I made it through. You can get through it as well. For me, it was worth it.
I think it turned out lovely! It'll be interesting to see how the leaves do long-term.
Thanks. I don’t think it’s going to last long term but I’m going to make the best use of it while I have it. I’m ordering fairies tonight 🤣
I thought you were going to make an indoor compost! Not a decorative bowl! What an idea. Can you update on how it holds up long term??
I know! I started this project thinking, “This is so weird, but I like it!” 🤣 I’ll share an update at the end of the month in my “Monthly Update” video.
That’s amazing! It’s so glossy and whimsical, looks like a bowl you’d find in a fairy’s home 🧚🌿 Makes me think about making an entryway catch tray from a monstera leaf 😊 Also, I love your positive vibe, keep it up! 🫶
Entryway catch tray, that's a great idea. I'll add that to the list. LOL! Thank you for being here and your sweet comments. 😀
I think it's beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you! I’m glad it turned out so good.
Have you ever crafted with plant scraps before? If so, what did you make?
🤩
Happy new year!
Happy new year! I film this video in 2024. LOL! I think the next video is a 2025 one.
They're beautiful
Thank you, it was fun to get my plants a treat.
I NEEEEEED THOOOOSSSEEEE!
Getting new pots for the plants you love are so fun. The links are in my description. LOL!
I love all your new pots! 😍 The hoyas look great in them, never mind that they’re in smaller nursery pots 😊 The thrifted one has the same droplet pattern as my ceramic Starbucks tumbler, I love touching it 😅 The one you have your anthurium in I think is my favourite, I love the combination of glazed and matte textures. Great finds and I loved seeing what plants you used them for
Thank you so much! 🥰 I love that you noticed the droplet pattern and it is so satisfying to touch. LOL! 😄 These pots felt like a bit of a splurge but I'm glad I did. Paring the plants with the pots was such a fun process.
So darn relatable!
Never say never on camera. LOL!
Do you have a biglots in your area? They are going out of business and could possibly have very good prices on some pots.
I do, I'll have to check them out. Did you get any good deals so far? The only problem is that it is in town and we are in the country. LOL!
I love a good catch pot for all my plants
Same here! Catch pots help keep things tidy and stylish. :)
I really don't use cover pots. But I do thrift glass bowls and plates for drip trays and vases for no drainage potting. My collection is mainly terra cotta and glass. (DANG your String of Pearls is LUSH!)
I love the thrifting glass bowls and plates for drip trays too. Thrift store by us don't always have a good selection. Plus, it also means I have to drive into town, LOL! Does your area always have a good selection? We'll have to add thrift shops to out outing next year. :) BTW - My SOP is loving my neglectful watering habits. ha!
@mixonplantsncrafts We need to hammer out a date/place to meet! I'm really not opposed to coming to Indiana...
@@natjoy22I meant this year 😂 why am I stuck in 2024?
@mixonplantsncrafts 😅
Nice selection! I had no idea Amazon had such nice cover pot options! I gradually collected mine over the years at different nurseries. I saved zero monies haha
Thank you! Collecting them over time at nurseries sounds so fun, though and I'm sure each one must have its own little story. Amazon does have some great finds. I love the saving money part, too! I’ve linked these in my description. I forgot to mention that in my video!
Love all the planters 😊 They’re all super cute 🥰
@@jessicabellone913 They were great addition. 😍 Thanks for being here.
