I spent the morning challenging myself by signing up for a mountain bike race. Never done anything like this before and have spent the nearly 5 months off the bike. The event is held annually by Gro Races, gropromotions.com/. It's a 14.2 mile course and 6 hours to run as many laps as I can. Let's get the pedals turning and see where I go!

Like your set-up. Seems like a lot of versatility. Do you think if you had a channel above the barn doors you can use the same fly or would you need a smaller one?
I don't think so, there wouldn't be a way to lock in the keder. But there's nothing saying you couldn't do the shortened, back of the camper width channels on the sides and have 3 points of use.
I have a bds 6 inch lift, do you know if that kit that covers the 2-4 inch lift works for a 6 inch lift?

Since our purchase there has been an increase in desire for the c-channel/keder systems and there are some creative diy builds that's more budget friendly. I'm sure they are just as functional as the DF Trap. After 2 years of use in all kinds of weather, multiple setup configurations both on and off the truck and not a single issue with it, we would say the quality has been worth the price.
With the barn doors like you have, did you have to do anything to keep the dust out like you have to do with a regular tailgate.
There is a seal around the door, similar to a tailgate seal. Far less dust intrusion than the tailgate with a tonneau cover.
Great option just think the price is steep
It's a hard one to swallow, however, after 2 years through rain storms, winds, hail, even a tornado warning, it's still just as functional as day one. The quality is there if the wallet will allow it.
Just got a 2016 ram 1500 tradesman v6. I want to lift it and put offroad tires on it so it's safer and easier for when I do go offroad or so I can take on more challenging roads but this shit is pricy af
Yes...yes it is. And the maintenance of all the parts that wear out prematurely because of the lift and tires add up too. Quite honestly if I were to do it all again I'd just invest in a Power Wagon or 2500 Rebel and not mess with the geometry.

One of our favorite areas to camp.
Nice straps. Yeah, even just a cheesy blue-plastic tarp, if you have poles and straps or know how to tie a taut line, you're way more flexible, especially in being able to lower it by removing pole sections. I'm surprised awning companies aren't selling valance or table-runner thingies to cover the gap. It's things like that that tell me the awnings buyers aren't really serious about all-weather camping. But camping, by definition, is all-weather. I like canopies/shelters that I can lower. I'm even looking at how to lower my EZ-up beyond the measly 5 notches they have. There is a "lowest" setting that entails not raising the legs beyond their fully collapsed length that you can set up chairs under that's way more wind-resistant, but between that and their lowest extended height is way too big of a jump. It'd be nice to have custom heights, like you have when you're doing it yourself with tarp, lines, and sectioned poles.
It really is the little details that make a huge difference in a camping experience. For many people just starting out it's easy to overlook those things and not recognize the downfalls until a situation brings them to light. I hope you find a solution to your EZ-Up that suits your needs. Cheers!
You don't have a gap with the Dragon Fly Tarp, since it slides into the Keder Rail (channel).

Which VHB Tape did you use? Are you worried about its interaction with rain and heat vs the factory OVRLND C channel install?
I used what Dragon Fly supplied, I'm not certain which one specifically it was but it was 3M brand VHB. I have not had any worries or issues with it so far and it lives in Utah weather.
We use a powerful original 3M VHB tape. Some customers prefer to also put in a screw at the end. Some don't. in the 11+ years that we've been producing these tarps, and sending the VHB tape with them, we've never had a rail fly off the van.
Seems like a great option for truck campers. 👌 The attachment method wouldn’t work on our teardrop camper with a Rhino Rack.
I have a friend with a roof rack on his Tacoma, he ordered one without the track system, Dragon Fly, added straps to attach it to the rack instead. So it could work for your Rhino Rack as well. Cheers!

Any experience using this in winter with snow or cold weather?
We've had some nights down in the 20's F with and without the insulation. The insulation made a world of difference but considering it's still a pop-up there's a chill. We invested in a diesel heater so we can open up that camping season a little further, looking forward to putting it to the test. Haven't been in the snow but others haven't had any issues with the extra weight on a snowy trip.
Looking really hard at these!!! Are you still happy with the OVRLND? I'm scared of the leaking potential of the canvas, opening and closing repeatedly. Would you buy another one?
We would 100% get another one. We've had no issues with the canvas, in fact they use the same tarp material truckers use to cover loads, it's pretty robust.
Can you please tell me if you need to stack the 2 bed platforms to close the top or can you leave them in sleep mode? I ask because it seems like you could fit way more bedding with the platforms unstacked bit I'm not sure of you can work the front lift mechanism to pop it up. thanks
We do travel with the bed out, for the exact reason you've mentioned, we have a lot of bedding. Then when we get to camp we'll stack it to give us the full space. It can be slightly awkward to open and close the front while laying on the bed but it's not difficult once you do it a few times.

That's exciting, congrats on your purchase! We store all of our kitchen stuff in that black storm case. We do all our cooking outside so we chose not to build a kitchen system inside the camper.
Do you wish you had windows on the side?
No, the windows in the canvas is enough for us. We like using the wall space for storage.

Just put the 35x12.5x17 on wifes jacked up wrangler today. For the last 3 years, ive avoided driving her jeep because it wandered/hunted all over the road, every bump made me feel like i was having a prostate exam, and generally a horrible ride that felt very unsafe. She bought it with 35x12.5x17 Terra Grapplers on it already. And last week I noticed BAD cracking all throughout the treads, so decided to get new tires on it. After installing these new procomps today, the jeep feels like a completely different vehicle. No wandering, no hunting, no vibrations, very stable and straight. Drives like a brand new Nissan. So, for a few years, ive hated her jeep, and it was literally because her tires were crap the whole time. Ive only out 20 miles on them getting home today, but out the door I have to say the tires have changed her entire ride to a much more road friendly ride that doesnt scare the crap out of me to drive it. Very happy with the change.
Amazing what some new tires can do for a vehicle. Glad they're working out for you, they were certainly great for us!

The wind is not nearly as bad as the rtt we came from. Yeah it's still going to be louder than a hard side but I think it's a good compromise. The steps are just a Little Giant step ladder that has the back removed. I just ratchet strap it to the bumper. It was the perfect size for a sturdy and safe way to get in and out.

We ordered the foam from the Foam Factory (foambymail.com). Then I made the covers out of duck canvas. I'm sure you will enjoy the camper as much as we do!

I sure like the way it attaches to vehicle & can be use on either side of vehicle & supper light weight & great for shade or rain issues .. yeppers .. the only thing is ... what is the cost can I afford it on my tiny retirement income ? I sure hope it doesn't empty every pocket to obtain this ...lol
They're certainly not on the budget end but the quality is superior to others in the market.
Yes, the Dragon Fly Tarps are not inexpensive, but their quality surpasses anything available on the market today. They are made in the tiny town of Arco, Idaho. The quality and workmanship are superb, and customer service is impeccable. There are many awnings available on the market. The majority of them are made overseas (can I say China?). And, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. You always have the choice of buying great sturdy furniture, or go to Ikea. U.S.-made reliable multi-year-use products or Chinese-made single-use ones. Whatever you choose, I hope you like your choice and continue to enjoy the great outdoors!

How do you find the split mattress setup? I'm a little concerned about the gap between the mattresses being uncomfortable. Are there any options you would change if your were buying again such as side hatches?
We don't even notice the gap. We ordered the foam and made the covers for them so they don't have any piping or any obstruction that could be uncomfortable. For our style of camping I don't see the benefit of hatches, side windows etc. We like using the interior walls for storage. I think if we were to do it again we'd probably stick to the same options we have. But it's all about having an understanding of how you want to make that space work for you and your style of camping.
4.5 months lead time? Forget that. And no mention of price?
We ordered ours in the winter for a spring install, the lead time wasn't a big deal since we don't camp much in the winter. After our chosen options and tax (AZ tax is a killer) the out the door price was about $12k.

The 'M' is a good option too. In my research I personally felt the quality of the Ovrlnd was superior and of course the barn door option. I'm sure you'll be happy with either one.
@RoamBearded Nice video! I like your ceiling finish a lot. Just back from a trip in the July 2023 southern heat wave and my exposed roof framing was too hot to touch so I am investigating additional roof insulation in my OVRLND. Good point on the latches. Ask ME how I know. I was happy that the pop-up roof is attached better than I thought. Enjoy the journey.
Haha, yeah 12 miles at 65-70 MPH popped the top up and no damage done, quite impressive. I know how hot that roof can get in the Utah sun, that aluminum will get hot fast, we're pretty happy with the barrier.
Where did you find the steps into the truck bed?!
They are the Little Giant step safety step with the back and grab handle remedy. It's just ratchet strapped to the bumper for a solid mount.
I'm a little late to the party here but those Barn doors are great. I thought they were only doing the half barn doors. Taking out the tailgate for full barn doors does make it a lot easier to get in and out. Question though, how do the barn doors perform with rain or dust? And have they lost any alignment? Your reason for the north window was very thoughtful. I was thinking you had to put some type of awning windows on the sides or barn doors for air circulation during inclement weather. Was even thinking along the lines of Tern Arctic or dometic windows which, in my opinion, are too pricey for that type of Topper. Almost forgot, are the Barn doors removable? We have not had any issues with dust or water intrusion with the barn doors, a pressure washer will let a little water in though. I haven't looked close enough to see if they can be removed, the bottom portion could be removed and replaced with the tailgate if you wanted. They are still straight and as solidly built as it is I don't think they'll lose shape at all. We thought we might miss the tailgate but we're happy with our choice.

Just one more question... I see you insulated the ceiling, you most likely used 1" block foam and you then covered the entire ceiling with silver faced bubble wrap. How did you secure the bubble wrap to the ceiling? Is the bubble wrap staying secured to the ceiling? Thanks Jeff
I actually skipped the foam block with the understanding that the reflective properties can provide more 'insulating' value by having the air gap. For mounting it I ran Velcro along all of the roof beams.
What's the drivers head angle POV with the phone turned to landscape? Does the steering wheel interfere with the full view of the phone?
