NEC Classic Motor Show 2024 – Saabs and more
This year's Saab Owners' Club stand at the Classic Motor Show was dedicated to the Saab 900 T16 and the B202L engine which celebrates 40 years since it was first released.
To pre-empt comments on the music - sorry. Trying to find decent stuff I can use is hard and without music the video felt flat. So, I hope the shots of beautiful cars makes up for it.

Saaby's Garage - Saab 900 Turbo 16S (a Harry’s Garage homage)
มุมมอง 31K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've longed for Harry (from Harry's Garage) to record a video with a Saab 900 Turbo, but alas, to date, it's never happened. So, I thought, why not record one myself? This is a tongue-in-cheek, one-off video, and I hope Harry doesn't mind me taking over some of his favourite roads. I apologise for my lack of knowledge and that I simply don't have the insights that Harry brings to his videos. I ...

I took Morty to Swedish Day in Yeovil. It was a wonderful trip out in the sunshine along the beautiful UK roads (well, apart from the potholes), and I met so many nice people.

Saab 900 Turbo 16 S - Exciting news
มุมมอง 11Kปีที่แล้ว
Thanks for watching the video. This is the first time I've tried to edit a video into more than simply me and my iPhone and also the first time I've braved stepping in front of the camera. I'm still learning how to create videos, but I hope to improve and create some new content with Morty through 2024. A massive thank you to Matt Searle for contacting me about photographing Morty for his new b...
Saab 900 Turbo 16S - Adding a manual switch for the radiator fan
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
I noticed that Morty gets quite hot when stuck in traffic and takes a while for the radiator fan to kick in. Now, that's my opinion and many good folk in the Saab forums said that it's probably me and not the car as Saab 900's temperature gauge does often tip up close the the H. However, I wanted to see if I could put in a manual switch to turn the radiator fan on earlier. If you know a better ...
Saab 900 Turbo vs AI (Please read description)
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
I was intrigued how the new raft of AI tools would view the mighty Saab 900. So, I wrote a very simple instruction to invideo.ai to create a 2 minute video about the history of the Saab 900 Turbo - and this is what it came up with. The AI engine at invideo wrote the script, picked the stock images, chose the background music, and created the voice-over in less than 5 minutes. Sure, the AI has m...
Help! My classic Saab 900 Turbo has a leak.
มุมมอง 595ปีที่แล้ว
In my first video, I mentioned that I had a potential leak in my electric sunroof on my classic Saab 900 Turbo. After some testing with a hosepipe, it's definitely a leak somewhere. I've checked the drains and they're all clear. Where would you say my next place to look should be? The black rubber seal on the sunroof? The edging around the sunroof hole? Somewhere else? Also, if anyone has a goo...
Saab 900 Turbo 16 S - Electric window fault and fix
มุมมอง 748ปีที่แล้ว
In the first week of owning my new Saab Turbo, the passenger electric window stopped working. It turned out to be a super simple fix which I thought I'd share in case in happened to you. I acknowledge this is pretty basic-level stuff and most of you who are watching will know more than me. But if it helps one person, then I'm happy.
Saab 900 Turbo 16 S - My Introduction
มุมมอง 11Kปีที่แล้ว
This is my first video on TH-cam, so please be kind. Having just bought a classic Saab 900 Turbo 16 S a couple of weeks ago, I'm keen to learn and share my journey with you. This is a quick walk around of the car (Morty) and sharing some of the little problems which have cropped up so far. I really would welcome tips and knowledge from the great Saab community as I go along, so please leave you...
The 900 (in 2 or 3 door form) has been my favourite car since I first became aware of them - c.1980? Owned a 1985 900i 3-door 8-valve for a few years in the late 90's and it remains the best care I've ever owned. Check out the utterly gorgeous Turbo that "I AM detailing" attended to a couple of years ago. I'll repeat something I said elsewhere - if you want to show an alien or future civilisation what a "motor car" is, show them this.
i had a 900t recently would love another good one - the rear boot was a shock so large, currently on 3rd 93 as daily driver... its a shame less specilaists around to look after the 900
Wait, who is this fella? Where is Harry?
top class, love for ever!
I totally agree: "please come back Saab".
Fantastic!!!
Adding to everything others said before me, like we use to say in Portugal: "this is a truly original replica"... of Harry's Garagem reviews. Just loved, very well done! And I love Saabs too!
Well done🚗 I hope Harry has seen it.
They ignition is in a great place to be destroyed by spilled drinks. Later versions at least had a raised pod.
I think I will keep my Viggen forever
Please KEEP UP the good work. Why not a Citroen 2CV for the next video; mind you, ownership of Saabs and 2cv's tended to go hand-in-hand
Great idea! Thanks
@@kemosaabe You have a subscriber, then! "Oh, the joy of simple motoring......"
Beautiful display of Saabs
Thank you!
Great stand and some remarkable cars! Well done. I have a near neighbour who bought a black manual T16 coupe, from new. It still looks stunning. A question from an Australian enthusiast - where does the 9000 model fit (1984- 1998) within UK SAAB enthusiasts minds, pre-GM, especially the 5-speed AERO? It's 40 years since its launch. Happy New Year to all SAAB enthusiasts.
The 9000 does have a good following in the UK, although it's safe to say the model hasn't reached the iconic status of the 900. It's a much better car than the 900, it's a lot newer so you would hope so, but that doesn't always reflect in how car enthusiasts feel about it. In Saab circles the 9000 is renowned for it's build quality and engineering. Outside Saab circles, less so. Some say it's the last great Saab, others that it doesn't feel like a true Saab - you can't win! Although I think it's the only Saab built after the 1970's not to not have the key in the centre console? The Saab Owners Club will be celebrating 40 years of the 9000 at the NEC Classic Motorshow in 2025 with a couple of models on display. A very early 1985 car and probably the range topping Carlsson.
Many thanks Matt for the reply. I have a near neighbour here in Sydney who still owns his black manual T16 Coupe he bought new - it's in stunning condition. As to myself, I've always admired the SAAB brand from afar, owning many Brit classics etc but I finally took the plunge a year ago and bought a silver 1997, manual, 9000 AERO. I like the 900 TURBO very much, but their prices are very high here. The 9000 AERO seemed a bargain and I admit to liking the styling very much - who could not like the Recaro seats in the 9000 AERO for example? They have to be some of the best looking and most comfortable seats in any car, let alone a SAAB. These cars are also very rare here now, the few being thrashed to death - but I was very was lucky finding a local car, only two owners with full history and looking new and rust free, body and trim (paint and the interior are unmarked, being garaged the whole time). The B234R engine is a peach and highly tunable, and frankly in standard form still has a lot of urge.
It's a wonder you didn't bump into both Harry and No.27 doing their reviews on the same roads!
Great review 'Harry', nice to see you finally reviewing a proper car.
Ha ha. If the real Harry ever wants to borrow Morty for a review, he’s very welcome.
Use wheel chocks shaped to the tyres/ they are not expensive and save flat spots. Great for winter storage. Greet car and some great winter precautions there. Leave the wipers off the glass too. Saves the Rubber.
Thanks for the tips!
That's interesting, I also have a Saab 900 T16S in Embassy blue and registered in August 1990 with the body kit and a louvre panel on the rear screen, needs a lot of work!
I have owned two of these, an 89 coupe and a 88 hatch. The coupe was almost new and was a fantastic drive stiffer than the hatch, however the hatch was almost as good and was far more practical. They were both in the same colour as yours too, I will always remember the comfort of the seats, the build quality and the switchgear, but most of all how they went! The reason I bought the first was that I was following one in my XR3i back in 87 and it took off and I couldn't touch it! Great cars still supported by a fan base unknown today amongst modern vehicles. Wished I still had the coupe, at least I had the experience and my 2007 first gen CLS320 CDI gives me approximately the same driving experience!
Thanks for sharing your memories. They both sound like excellent cars. 👍
More iconic than a 911... Love it ❤
There is no other car that can compare to SAAB because SAAB is not only just a car SAAB is a way of life! SAAB is beauty, SAAB is strength, SAAB is strong individuality. SAAB NEVER DIES. Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolaget ❤️
Brilliant
I too have a Saab 900 turbo convertible and I will not trade it with anything.
Well. It didnt come without its issues. Is it Classic? Definetly. ❤
LOVE!!
Great to see Matt talking about the book. It's fantastic - a tremendous achievement....and his car is utterly gorgeous 😍
I heartily agree. Thanks for watching.
Any suggestions on where to get the silver decals from the (talladega) red T16 with body kit?
Latvia Saab
Yes, Latvia Saab is where Matt got his from. You can choose the colour you want.
Another great video and amazing tribute to the Classic 900! Hope to catch up with you next year Paul 👍🏼🌟
Thanks! I can’t wait.
Pity your display only seemed to promote the 900 - any reason why? When I saw your link, I thought great, we will see a nice range of SAABs at the show... !
For one year only, the stand celebrated the 900 Turbo 16S as it’s the 40th anniversary of its release. Don’t worry, next show will have the full range again.
No problem, I was in some haste when I wrote that message! After I'd done it, I heard your explanation as to why it was just 900s. Greetings from Oz, proud owner of an immaculate rust free 1997 9000 Aero manual.
Great to meet you at the show on Friday, and talk all things Saab 900. All of the cars on the stand looked great, and really good to see the range from very early to the last. 👍
Thanks for coming Anthony. It was lovely to meet you and chat about these gorgeous cars. 👍
It was a great show. The Saab stand looked fantastic. The Talladega red one was my personal favourite. Absolutely stunning car.
Yes, Matt has done a sterling job with his car. 🚗😍
Good heavens we must be getting old. I remember my husband bringing a yellow convertible one home in the very early 90s
I love the yellow convertibles. Still stylish today. 👍
My ‘92 vert 900 is nicely tucked away out of the rain at the moment…. Thanks for the vid.
Great video, guys. I love the later ones but the flat nose ones have grown on me lately 👌😀
Thank you. On the stand, I found that the younger folk tended to prefer the newer shape and the more mature leaned towards the flat nose. 🧐
On my 3rd 900i classic since mid 80s. First two I went round the clock with twice. Maybe it's time I joined the SAAB club?
Wow! That’s some impressive Saab mileage. 👍
Excellent video, thanks for making the effort to create it. The cars looked fabulous 😃
Thanks Alex. I’m still getting to grips with video recording and editing. Each video gets a little better I hope. Great to capture these lovely cars. 🚗💨
@ I thought you were brilliant. You are a natural in front of the camera and behind 😁
Love my 1991 900 SPG (16v S). Will never sell it.
Good for you. They’re keepers! 👍
Ok. Firstly, the original recardo engine was a Co development between Saab and triumph. Please stop calling it a triumph engine that’s not accurate. Secondly the engine was originally fitted to the 99 not the 90. And the third generation ‘h’ type engine was the 16 valve unit fitted to the 9000 turbo, not the 900. Unless you’re referring to the APC system fitted to the 8 valve turbo and then the 16 valve later, as a generation of engine. The APC system was an add on to the original ‘h’ type engine rather than a generation of engine in its own right. The reverse gear lock wasn’t really about safety, it was an anti theft device. However, I agree wholeheartedly with your critique of the original stereo equipment, especially the speakers, they were rubbish. Every Saab 900 I’ve ever owned, I’ve changed all of them, a lot of the time putting a lovely pair of 6x9s in the rear shelf. Another minus point. The space in the glove box is a bit bobbins. Otherwise, good road test, nice to see you driving it properly and not hanging about, I enjoyed the following shots around corners especially. It is lovely to see that car strutting its funky stuff.
I would also like to say that it’s refreshing to see a video that uses the three door variant rather than the convertible. Content creators seem to forget that the three door even existed, I though actually prefer them aesthetically.
I bought a black 3 door 16s in 1989. It had just under 100000 miles on it, but drove like new and I loved it. After a couple of years I flogged it to a mate, who put another 250000 miles on it. Unfortunately I found that I couldn't live without a Saab in my life so I bought a 9000 Carlsson turbo (And I still kick myself for selling that after I had owned it for 16 years. Now I'm running a 93 Aero 280 Sportwagon....not as fast as the Carlsson, doesn't handle as well despite the cross wheel drive, drinks twice as much fuel and costs more to tax than I spent buying the 16s! I still love it though.
Wow! Some stunning rare examples. Gutted I couldn’t make the show but this further drives me to complete my 1986 T16s Aero restoration. Looking forward to the full video release and the stand looks fabulous. What a celebration.. 👍
You missed a great show but I didn’t realise how tiring it would be. I’m looking forward to seeing your updates. 👍
@ One day.. 84/85/86 lineup.. 😉
I can remember someone told me the bonnet design was to let the snow fall of. Yes you had to open the bonnet and tip it foward 🤔
I hadn’t heard that before. I wouldn’t put it past those clever Swedish engineers. ☃️🚙
Hope to be there on Sat, was there also an all-cream colour 16S available at some point, still with the flat front?
Looking forward to my visit tomorrow- I’ve a Ruby, car 60 of the 150 🤓
Nice! Tom with the Ruby on the stand will love talking with you I’m sure. See you tomorrow. 🚗
I owned two 900i Classics in the 80s and 90s and now retired have a 3rd 900i after a 25 year gap of driving mostly company A4s. It just feels right.
Third time a charm. 🚗🚙🚗
Superb. Very well done! Lovely car and lovely homage to Mr M (who is one of my favourite TH-camrs).
Thanks for watching. 👍
when you store a Saab you are negating it's original purpose, Saabs are to be driven and enjoyed regularly, at least three to four times a week . And also as a dedicated Saab/Volvo tech it's really annoying when our clients make the noise that the car is making, describe the sound and simply tell me where. Saabs of this vintage need a technician as an owner with mechanical sympathy .
I totally get your point and agree. The problem is my area heavily salt the roads in the winter and my undercarriage doesn’t like that. I do take Morty out throughout the winter, just not as much. 👍
When I decided to find a Saab, somewhere around ‘96, I kept my eyes open for a grey(Edwardian?) , or green (scarab?). I ended up finding a lemans blue. At the time, not what I wanted, but a ‘92 vert in really good shape, and probably unlikely to find another. Plus, already had (still have) a red jeep XJ. I’ve grown quite fond of the color, and at the recent SoC in the states, everyone said it was a somewhat uncommon color. Keep these baby’s on the road! Btw, yours is exquisite
Harry’s collection is better than yours. Your hair is better than his. I’ll call it a draw. Is that a Tudor Black Bay? Don’t think Harry has one of those 😉
the smell is also the glue used throughout all Saab 99 and 900 interiors. Always the same. Sagging headliner anyone?
Ahh, I didn’t know that. Thanks. The sunroof part of my headlining is slightly saggy, so that needs to be sorted soon.
Ha ha 😂Nice one
I absolutely lost it when you gestured, “the huge wraparound window”. You deserve every bit of praise and appreciation you’re getting here. This is sliced, fried gold!
Ha ha. Thanks. I’m so pleased that people like the video. 👍
