Consoloscopy

The Consoloscopy Channel is where I go deep on consoles and controllers. I've been a fan of taking electronics apart and back together since I was just a little kid 25+ years ago. I've watched, learned, and practiced a lot of the last few years and thanks to the surplus of TH-cam videos out there I'm managed to fix quite a few consoles and controllers. I am a video editor by trade and figured it would be a fun and challenging project to combine the two passions. I like my tutorials to be simple, comprehensive, and satisfying. I hope anyone who watches leaves with the feeling that they, too, can complete the task shown. Good lighting, sound, camera angles goes a long way whether you fully realize it or not when viewing any sort of tutorial. When it comes down to it, if I can pull these sort of fixes, disassembles, cleanings, repairs, and reassemblies you probably can too. Of course the right tools are needed as is support via Likes, Subscribers, Comments, and Shares.
Nintendo Wii U Gamepad - Disassembly, Cleaning, and Reassembly
I got this Wii U Gamepad from a buddy for relatively cheap and while it did work, it needed some cleaning. In this video we take the gamepad completely apart, clean up the plastics, then reassemble it.
The Wii U Gamepad isn't a hard breakdown but with the stickers on the back, some annoying cable runs, and plentiful ribbons, there is room for mistakes. As stated in the video, there were two spots I briefly overlooked that you should not.
The whole job: 7/10.

Playstation 5 Controller - Partial Disassembly, Cleaning, Drift Fix
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Offered to fix my neighbor's stick drift on his PS5 controller. It was an unusual sporadic drift. Not a constant. Picked up some Helder Game Tech Analog Stick Drift Fix pads to see if I could fix up the controller. Difficulty: 5/10 because you have to solder. But it's one of the easiest soldering jobs. Yeah, I know, I know. My soldering job doesn't look that great. But it's functional. Timecode...
SHORT - Steam Deck DBRAND Case Replacement Unboxing
มุมมอง 8612 ปีที่แล้ว
DBRAND messed up with their first go at a case for the Steam Deck... well, they messed up the kickstand. But they made it right by sending everyone free replacements. Let's take a look at the unboxing process DBRAND is known for and what to expect with the sent replacement. Items sent: Replacement case, new turn based removable kickstand, what appears to be a slight plastic riser, and a USB-C e...
XBox One Original - Disassembly, Cleaning, Reassembly
มุมมอง 9002 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this original XBox One for $50. It was looking pretty bad in the pictures so I figured it’d be a solid project. Getting the console apart is relatively tricky. This was the first Microsoft console I’ve disassembled and feel it’s less intuitive compared to other consoles. As you see, this console was as filthy as the others. Nothing really needed to be replaced fortunately. I’d say with a ...
Nintendo Switch Lite - Disassembly, Cleaning, Assembly, Polishing, Skin Removal
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I got my hands on a Nintendo Switch Lite that has seen some usage on it. Some buttons were quite gunky and sticky and it had an unnecessary Spiderman skin stuck to it. The rubber on the analog sticks had also been worn away. My goal was to get this NSL looking as new as it could be and change out the sticks. The whole job difficulty: 7/10. Nintendo Wii U - Disassembly, Cleaning, Assembly, and Polishing
มุมมอง 44K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this Wii U Console off of eBay and while it did work, it was pretty gross. In this video we take the console completely apart, clean up the plastics, motherboard, and metal, reassemble the console, then give a good polishing. The Wii U console isn't terribly hard to get into and put back together, but it does take some time and has about 25 screws(about 6 different variations). The antenn...
Gamecube Controller - Thumbstick and C-Stick Module Replacement
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
While I am considered an amateur when it comes to things like soldering, I was able to disassemble, clean, replace the modules, and reassemble this Nintendo Gamecube controller that had a ton of play in its thumbstick. I figured this would be a good confidence-building first episode for this channel that will focus on cleaning and fixing consoles and controllers. The thought is that if I can do...
Just like all the other "teardown" videos on TH-cam, you didn't show how to remove the rumble off the back cover...
40:00 if you have to squeeze the case at the front next to the battery compartment, you inserted the small rubber piece the wrong way. The one in the front has to be inserted in the top half of the case, the one in the back on the bottom half. Take note that thery're different and only fit flush, if you put them in the right way.
You are correct
39:35 That's odd. I don't have this dial. But the Volume control worked before. Maybe this lil' thing is detachable and I've lost it....
Oh no. So no more audio control?
@@consoloscopy Correct. I don't know how this happened. I've looked all over my workbench and haven't found a piece similar to the small plastic. I set it to 50% Volume and moved on ):
i’m gonna use this tutorial to get a new front plate and screen for my Wii game pad. It doesn’t look very good.
Hell yeah
Doing this with short term memory loss was difficult lmao
lol. Gotta have the guide right there and take it slow. Hopefully you were successful!
I already know mines going to be ten times dirtier 😭
Keep up the great content this was very entertaining
Thanks so much. I plan on getting some more going soon.
I don't know why, but with my gamepad's motherboard, 2 of the films that you disconnected with clips don't have clips on them. Instead, they are soldered directly onto the motherboard, denying me access to the screen. Is there others with the same dilemma? Is there a work around for this?
what whaaaa. I've never heard that. I'm not sure your best bet from there. Gotta be something though. Guessing you've done digging through TH-cam aside from this video?
Thanks a lot ! You helped me to assembly after a fuse repair. 😊
Love to hear it! Glad it could help. If you would, follow on Facebook, Insta, and TikTok. Trying to maximize my presence for some come-back videos I'm drumming up.
Took me over a hour to assemble. The cable routing is crazy. Probably one of the hardest. Electronics I've taken apart.
appreciate you and this video ! i got a wiiu in great condition however it needed a deep clean. appreciate the detail for every step of the way. many thanks !!!!
Only issue I had was I mixed up what screws went where… excellent video though
Brother, you helped me replace a broken analog stick so I could revisit one of my favorite games, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. I've never done any sort of electronic repair, so of course I was terrified of getting in there and breaking something, but now my Gamepad works perfectly thanks to you! There was something really magical about those days when Twilight Princess first released on the Wii, and playing this game really helps to bring it all back. You can't imagine my gratitude.
Man, I REALLY appreciate this comment. Thanks, @mncrump. I'm really glad you got your gamepad up and running for one of the most worthy games. LOVED Twilight Princess. Enjoy the gaming!
Great video man! The Ifixit guides weren't enough so thank you for this!
Love to hear it! Thanks so much for the comment. Glad I could help!
Fantastic video! Very clear, and perfect editing. Hope you will make more videos in the future as this is a brilliant idea for a channel. Just bought a 2nd hand Wii U and the buttons are sticky, so was looking for more insight on what I’d be dealing with inside.
Dude, thanks so much! I think about it all the time. They just take a lot of time. Something I have less of these days. The "studio" is set up and right behind me. I just haven't figured out the timing. I need to do a poll on what we want next.
@@consoloscopy Speaking as someone who also has their own channel, I understand what you mean. But what about the Portal? The Steam Deck? Or even the PS5 Pro when it releases?
holly view numbers :O
Hey, very well-made video. This is exactly what was needed. I was in the process of carefully reassembling the pad step by step, staying calm and very cautious. But as soon as I tried to move it, the plastic piece that holds the orange connection on the circuit board broke off. It seemed to have gotten tangled in its hinge, and that’s why, with the slightest careful movement -bling- it snapped. It’s the thing you move at 41:26 in the video, and on the circuit board, it’s labeled "P15." What can I do now? Is all the work wasted? Is it possible to go without this connection? It’s super frustrating, all the parts are ready for assembly, and now this really fragile little piece is making me unsure if I can continue. I’ve spent the last hour trying to somehow wedge it back in, but no luck.
Mannnnn, when you break a piece off the board, you really limit your options. If it's just the piece that clamps it down, you may be able to get the wire where it should be just without the clamp and put some circuit tape on it to hopefully keep it in place. If it's the entire fixture to the board, you are out of luck. gotta find a local micro solder guy and hope you can find the piece the and he/she's able to do the job. Sorry, man.
Thnx for helping us
Welcome!
That there is a smoker console.
I got one nearly as filthy recently, i would say yours is just a tad more caked up than mine. I have it cleaned up for the most part, i just need to get to the heatsink which i dont wanna take every screw out and fully disassemble it if i dont have to. Im hoping that if i take the fan out i can squeeze a duster in there and brush off stuck/condensated dust then blow it again. Edit: believe it or not my heatsink is much more caked up than yours though, the rest of yours is much dirtier
Mines reassembled...but power button just flashes
sadly got two clamps off in the process and now got fading blue light
Typically we would heat the heatsink slightly to loosen the thermal pad a bit and then twist it gently while it is warm. Or let it be on for a while before… but it takes a long time to disassemble so not ideal on Wii U

"That Guy" by Ben Walters aka A Bliss Abyss
Tanks you 😉
Wlcome!
I think the polish would look a lot better if you prepped it out more by running water on it and some alcohol avoiding the lettering and then you use polish. If you want to do a legit detail for a car you wash the car, iron decontaminate it, wash again, and then clay bar, and then you compound, polish and right before your last step you apply a alcohol mixture to make sure nothing is left. And last you use a ceramic coating . Now the gamepad doesn’t need all that but it needs the minimum of water and alcohol -I say it needs to be prepped because you don’t want to run that dirt and contamination back into the paint you want to remove it all and then make it look nice again and protect it for years to come
Yeah, you are entirely correct there.
Hey man, thanks for the full teardown!! I was doing a shell swap on a busted one and this vid saved me! the wire routing is wild... Helped me fix a sticky button ont he dpad too!
Let's go! That's awesome to hear!
This should have been called the mii and not the wii. It focuses on a personal game pad where as the wii wad for the family or friends. Total miss step by nentendo cause the wii u is a lame name. The wii and wii u are so similar it's crazy and it's why nentendo sales were dismal compared to the predecessor wii. Wii was so fun back then when was sweeping the nation and did 100million units
Thanks. I needed an HD an clean video of cleaning and reaseembly
Well, there you go. I hope it helped!
Hey did you reapply thermal paste?
Didn't need to. The thermal pad was still intact.
i have like 3 screws left and i dont get what i did wrong
Bruh how do you not have more subscribers with a channel name like that lol
lol. RIGHT!?
Thank you for the detailed video!
You are quite welcome!
These videos are something I watch to go to sleep because it's relaxing
Thank you so much! I very much appreciate the comment/compliment! Hopefully more coming soon!
@@consoloscopy yay
Just came across this video since I found my Wii U collecting dust and decided to mod it and clean it up so it looks respectable in the living room. I love this detailed video and your channel name slaps. I subbed and look forward to more awesome vids man! Keep it up!
When are you posting again? love ur videos :)
As soon as I can.
My screen isnt turning on after reassembly
You figure it out?
My volume slider is loose
thank you. helped me a lot.🙂
Hey, great video! Haven't found anything alike! I have one problem tho: I dissassembled it to fix the squeaking rumble motor. I had a second gamepad, for spare parts, that I used the motor of. Now it doesn't work with either gamepad. Can I fix this or do I have to live without feedback now?
Are you 100% are fully connecting the ribbon? I'll assume so. If that is the case, I don't know why neither would work. Are you 100% sure the other one you had for spare parts worked originally?
@@consoloscopy I have put it in as far as possible, but this probably is a thing. The other one worked, the only thing not so nice about the spare was the screen. Well, no rumble is less disturbing than squeaks, so I can live with that. Thanks!
I had my wii u since 2014 when i was 11, anyway, my gamepad rumble motors are pretty weak from me dropping the gamepad. Are the motors easily replaceable?
I imagine swapping the analog sticks, which is quite easy, would take care of that for you.
I have two Wii U's. Mine is in good impeccable condition but the ones I had gave my children they got it so dirty. I was going to take it apart but after watching this video I'm thinking I'm just going to send it to someone, it's way too much and I don't have the patience for it
Thank you so much I cleaned my White Wii U now.👍
Hell yeah, dude!
Is there anything that can be skipped or kept together if im just swapping all the internals into a new shell?
Thanks for showing :)
Thank you for this!! I Need to replace a screen and thanks for this.
I'm stuck at the ending It Doesn't stick properly
Anything old like that will probably never stick right again after removing them sadly. Just gotta do the best you can.
@@consoloscopy i fixed it, omg i put the Pen entrance upside down 🤦 ngl the whole process was pain in my back
The „a“ button sometimes doesn’t respond when pressing it while playing a game. What could be the issue and how could i fix that?
Gotta make sure there's nothing obstructing the button from the board. Also might be faulty circuitry.
@@consoloscopy i have opened it and there was a tiny bit of dust between the button and the rubber. Removed it and now it works :)
@@limitlessboy6423 This pleases me.
What type of screws?
Found this since I was thinking of disassembling mine, very clear!
Thanks! I hope it helped.
Great video! I just bought an old Wii U and I watch the whole video! Thx
HI! I know you don't have a lot of subscribers so I decided to subscribe. Thank you for making this video! I like to repair but I haven't learned the wii u yet. This is extremely helpful seeing as I have a few of these gamepads that need some attention. The pace of the video is great, lots of attention to detail! I also like the commentary! That's the best part! It's like having a buddy along to warn you of common fails and make sure you don't snap a ribbon cable or tiny hidden cord somewhere. Foreal, I appreciate all your recommendations and insights! Your explanations make me feel like I am actually learning something, not just following along. The tips and warnings and detailed explanations really do the trick for me! It's way better to watch you do all this work and explain it step by step versus following a quick guide that tries to be a bit more "entertaining." I'm sure I'll be watching your wii u console breakdown and clean video soon as well. Thanks in advance! Using Udpih recovery menu I figured out I likely have some fuses to replace or bridge. I hope over time you get lots of views on this video, you deserve it! Take care! P.S. I think the wii u is a very fun, interesting, useful console, it's so awesome haha, way too little love for it, I missed it when it first released and came back to admire it post mortem. People will look back at it like they do the dreamcast eventually, but not much love for it right now lol! Thanks for sharing a little for the poor ol' thing! Oh, and your channel name is perfect!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate this comment. As always, I'm super pumped this helped/will help a fellow tinkerer. Even more happy when I'm informed how much it helped. Thanks a lot!
