I'm just an artist from Detroit, Michigan
The Fibonacci Machine (and how I made it)
It took me a long time to edit and upload this video. They say "better late than never" but sometimes I wonder how true that statement is. Please just understand that I've been struggling with some rather difficult health issues over the past few years. But, at least I got this video out.
Let me know if you like it, and please be kind. Thank you!

Math ART made me make this

Math Art Is Amazing!! Just a simple video of the Natural Machine art piece by Helena Blakemore. This piece began as a prompt for a class project. Big thanks to Professor Lenuel Hernandez and all of Wayne State University for the inspiration and motivation. The two spinning "wheels" are made out of plywood. Their shape is made from four Fibonacci sequence golden spirals. I had the idea that two ...
Very intricate and I did enjoy your explanation of the process. Makes sense to me and love that you would like to make something as an art piece. As it had started, my first thought was " hmmm what if those were spirals of neon?"
Hypnotizing.
Very nice! You could tighten the chain, by adding a roller halfway, to get rid of the jerky movement of secondary spiral.
That's a good idea, thanks!
cool!
so cool
This is awesome - I could watch it all day. I think it looks better going slow than going fast. Thanks for sharing the design+build process!
Make it go faster! Making it is trivial.
This should have a lot more views!😊
Very cool machine! I forgot I was subscribed to your channel. Glad you're back.
That's really impressive!
Okay, so like, what is the purpose of this machine exactly? Dont get me wrong, its neat but what does it do?
I think it's just for show

Like most art, the purpose is subjective. The following is what it means to me. The Fibonacci number shows up a lot in plant life due to how cells divide. This is why the golden spiral exists in a lot of flowers, but it's also why seashells have the same spiral. For this reason, the golden spiral has come to mean "natural". I hold the personal belief that nothing is "unnatural" (except perhaps the concept of it). We also live in a world where industrialization is seen as "bad" due to its negative effects on the "natural" environment. I wanted to play with the idea that industry is based on nature and uses it for it's own purposes. At the same time, nature supports industry while being used. Both perspectives are valid. The difficulty is finding the balance that can work well for "human nature" while also not causing irreparable damage to "non human nature". After all, I don't consider a beaver dam to be unnatural just because it was made by a mammal. We, as humans, do the same thing for the same reasons. We just do it at a scale that can, potentially, have very bad (and unintended) side effects. So, what's the point of this piece? It's art. It exists because I thought of a thing and wanted to share it. It exists because I had an idea and wanted to explain it. The point is communication, society, and viewing the world through different lenses. After all, humans wouldn't be where they are today in their development if it wasn't for doing these things. In essence, the point is to help people to communicate about a difficult topic without buzzwords and team flag waving. The point is showcasing the beauty of interweaving various components working in harmony, instead of discord. Sorry this turned into an essay 😅 Great question
LOVE IT <3
Miss you
that is the saddest excuse for "Art" I have ever seen.back when I was in school we made real art and fist fights lol. looser
All I see is a dog lifting his leg.
Does left spiral have right spirals consent? :-)
so cool! *michigan respect.*
Saw your comment on Inheritance Machining's latest, and... something about your wording made me think that you were probably a maker, so I clicked over, and... was not disappointed! This is super cool... mesmerising, even. :) And some math geekery mixed in, too?? Bonus! Subscribed. :)
Not sure how this doesn't have way more views than it currently does. This is beautiful. Also, hello from a fellow Detroiter!
Hello! And thank you
Majestic! Well done!!
I think it would look more satisfying going the other way. Interesting project anyway.
I'll have to film it doing that. The switch on the front changes the direction, while the knob changes the speed.
@@HelenaOfDetroit You should film it going in the opposite direction but then upload the video in reverse.
If you scroll trough the video on the timeline it looks like it's going the other way.
This was awesome!
Nice
Hope you're doing well.
Took me a sec but then I remembered who you were.
Long time no see
