Like millions of people, I was horrified, angry, and sad watching Putin's invasion of Ukraine. I and Leopoldo Seguel put together this poetry reading as a protest. I hope you will watch and share this video. Yours in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Lyn

    Lore was a neighbor and member of our book club in Pittsburgh. She added so much to our discussions with her medical and psychiatric knowledge! I heard that she died over the weekend. Her memory will be a blessing.

    thank you for this video, Shota was a great thinker, an intellectual, he wrote this amazing, epic poem that has great ideas in it, once again thanks for appreciation. also those who say that it should be tiger and not panther, tbh in old Georgian "vepkhi" means a cheetah and not a tiger

    • @lyncoffin
      @lyncoffin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Kristen. I didn't know that (about cheetah). I am double glad that I chose the generic term. I wish you all the best.

    I'm brazilian and, as could be expected, can't read Georgian xD But I'm very interested in epic poetry and your english version of the poem was the means for me to study this most interesting Georgian medieval literary achievement. I only wish to let here my sincere acknowledgment for your effort.

    I am currently not in Georgia, studying abroad, but I am Georgian. It is always nice to re-read some Georgian poems to return to those beloved places once again but, today I wanted to find "The Knight in the Panther's Skin" in English as I needed to tell about my country and its culture on one of the lectures, so I ended up finding your translation, ended up finding your TH-cam channel and I am really happy that I am able to say thank you to you for such an amazing work. Thank you from me personally and from whole Georgia, they don't even know what kind of a job you have done.

    What I would like to know is, why "vepxis txaosani" is translated as "knight in a panther skin", not that I don't think panther is dangerous because they sure are, but there is a big difference between a panther and a tiger, this is about a tiger and a knight, how did panther get in there?

    • @lyncoffin
      @lyncoffin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Noah- Thanks for commenting. "Panther" includes "tiger"- being any of the large cats - I thought it better to allow for the various representatons. A tiger, whose generic name is "panthera tigris" is only the orange and black striped cat. So if you "see" "vepis txaosani" as a tiger- you're "seeing" one representation of a panther. That's how panther "got in there."

      In modern Georgian Tiger is Vepkhvi-ვეფხვი, but in old Georgian it is spelled Vepkhi-ვეფხი, which is more of a word for panther than tiger.

    • @MiRa-kd8gn
      @MiRa-kd8gn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      საერთოდ "ვეფხი" ძველ ქართულში ავაზას შესატყვისია და არა ვეფხვის

      Thank you all for replies, I understand word terminology and translation and all, thing is I have seen images and painting representations of this story and in all images the knight is holding up and battling a tiger, I have never seen an image or painting depicting this story and poem with knight fighting a panther. So it still makes no sense depicting image of knight fighting tiger while referring to the same tiger as a panther.

      მოიცათ ახლა... ლომ-ვეფხის დახოცვის ამბავი რომ არის მოთხრობილი ლომის და ავაზას დახოცვაა? რამენაირად ერთმანეთის შესატყვისია ლომი და ავაზა? ვით კატასა ვხოცდი ლომთაო. კაცი ლომს კლავდა და უცებ ლომის მესამედი წონის მხეცის მოკვლაზე ჩამოქვეითდა? თუ ლომიც სხვა რამეს ერქვა ძველ ქართულში? :) მოკლედ ვეფხვი არის ვეფხვი და შოთაც ვეფხსვს გულისხმობდა და არა ფისუნია კატას. თარგმანიც არასწორია.

    Depression can be rather complicated. How does one identify "depression" in an individual who is intent upon being "oppositional." Is "being oppositional" in this case, a cause, or the definition of "depression?" In this short comedy, Ms. Coffin eloquently explores whether knowing the cause of one's depression is of any value to one who is depressed.
