RSKT - The Capable Artist
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ย. 2019
Hi, I'm RSKT! An artist based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Over the years, I've done a lot of artwork for different people. I've done airbrushing, animation, video editing, photography, and graphic design. I've learned a lot by doing it, so I've decided to make this channel not only to share my artwork and progress but to also provide some tutorials for how I do all of this stuff.
I have a music channel too! Check out my Featured Channels section for "RSKT - The Capable Musician."

Design, Rig, and Animate a character in Moho - Full Tutorial
In today's video we'll be looking at how to design, rig, and animate a character all inside of Moho! I wound up putting a lot of work into this video to make it as easy to follow along with as possible. Moho is an amazing tool for character animation, and I'm so excited to be able to share this process with you all.

your videos are excellent. If you come back to recording, I hope you consider using a mic so the audio is a little more crisp. thanks for the content
❤
Thanks for the video, you're the only professional in affinity tutorial videos ❤
I can't get my pixel brushes to look like yours - they're super thick and blurry. What am I doing wrong?
I was suffering with that blurry issue effect, thanks
Can you make more tutorials XD you have been prob the best tutorial I've watched so far, most others I struggle to sit through and pay attention or just get more confused on how they explain things. This has been extremely helpful!
Hey, thanks so much! I haven't got one in the works just yet (stuck in a bit of a rut), but I'll probably get around to it eventually. Really glad you liked this ture though, so thanks for watching :)
Hi. Great video.. Is moho one time purchase or need to pay every month?
Thanks! It's a one time payment. When a new version comes out, you can usually pay a small fee to upgrade, but only if you want those new features. Basically, buy it once and it's yours!
@@RSKT_art wow thats awesome. Thank you for your valuable reply.you are so talented. Iam just beginner.can you suggest a version for me.?
@@adarshma345I would go the latest version, and go with the pro version. Debut is just too limiting and you'll find yourself wanting to upgrade right away
didn't expect to see a zoia in this moho tutorial lol. great tut dude
Haha, love the Zoia so much. I really want the euroburo someday
Thanks!!!
No worries!
I loved your animation. It was spot on! I also learned a little bit about Moho. Not an animator but it inspires me.
Thanks so much! Always glad to hear I've inspired someone. Animating is tonnes of fun, you should give it a go! :)
@@RSKT_art I'm definitely going to give it an honest try. I'd love to create stories for kids.
Holy shiiit an Aussie that uses both Moho AND affinity designer. The exact combo Ive been looking for! And you have a violent soho shirt 🙄 bro youre great
Haha thanks man, glad to have you here! Love me some Violent Soho!
I'm also a Moho dabbler and have been testing Affinity Designer. That first video convinced me that the combination of those programs is not the best idea. This one showed that Moho's own drawing tools are adequate. I like the pen tool in Designer, it has better control than Moho's, but hiding parts of lines and varying line width is so much easier in Moho. Even for still cartoons, Moho is a good option. I was able to duplicate Victor Paredes' dinosaur that looked hand-drawn, this Mantis is a bit over my head with all the controls, but it's explained really well. I don't know anything about violent Soho either, maybe that's the price of being an old American who lives in Germany.
Can you still get the same control if you import affinity designer vectors separated into different layers or does it screw up everything once imported into moho?
To some extent. If you were to design the character with its outline and colour on separate characters, then it should work pretty much the same. However, if you're just exporting them as images, it might behave a little different. I think drawing inside of Moho offers up a lot more creative freedom. It just takes some getting used to.
I didn't understand Styles until I saw this video. Is not posible, change lines or styles, or fill, after we make the draw?. If I want to change the style, fill, or line is posible? love the video man
Thanks so much! Yeah, styles are a tricky thing to wrap your head around, but once you understand it properly it can drastically speed up your workflow. It allows you to make changes to strokes, fills, and other things with just the click or two of a button. I'd highly recommend reading through the manual and experimenting with a practice file to help get the hang of it.
im so late, only just learning affinity ~ but when doing a bigger piece, do you do one section at a time? or do the full image? hope this made sense...
Hey! So my workflow is basically draft > line work > clipping masks > shading > shadows > highlights > colour correction. You can see this process in a few of my other videos where I do larger pieces. If you want a more in depth look to this illustration, check one of my webinars I made for Affinity's official channel. I do a larger piece while also breaking down a smaller piece at the same time. It's basically the same as this video but way more in depth. Hope that helps :)
This is great. I’m thinking of making the switch from an Animate/After Effects workflow to Moho and this was just another tick in the “take my money” column! Great tutorial ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I'm new to graphic design, and just beginning to learn. Are you using some sort of touch screen and stylus to draw this image? It would seem difficult to produce this kind of freehand drawing by dragging a mouse around. Towards the end of this presentation, you freehand the printing of words while recapping the tutorial. And I thought, "no way is he using a mouse to print letters!". Am I wrong?
I definately am! I'm using a crappy old graphics tablet in this video. In some of Moy other videos I'm using an ipad pro. If you look through my other videos though, I actually have one that shows you how to illustrate like this with just a mouse and keyboard (which I actually do a lot). Affinity has some really cool stabilising features that make it really simple to illustrate using just a mouse. Definately check it out :)
@@RSKT_art Thanks for the info! I had no idea that there was such a thing as a drawing tablet! I'm 72 and live alone. I have no family and no one to tell me this stuff! LOL. I think your videos are great. Please keep doing what you're doing.
No problem! Being an artist can sometimes be a lonely venture. Happy to help :)
Fantastic video with great details on outlines and shading! Very helpful. The one thing I struggled with is the clipping masks and how to draw inside of just the mask. Could you make a video on just this part or share some additional details on clipping masks? Thanks again for a great video!
Yeah the clipping masks can be a bit strange sometimes. You basically want to make sure the clipping mask layer is selected, and when you go to draw on it, you need to draw inside of it. It doesn't always work though so sometimes you just click anywhere to create a pixel layer, and then drag it inside of the clipping mask layer so it's nested inside of it. Hopefully that helps :)
This is GREAT.
Thanks!
Such a helpful video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Any idea roughly how long it took you from start to finish?
About a week, on and off. It's hard to put a number on it, but if I add up all the hours maybe a day or day and a half?
Cheers @@RSKT_art
do you used a graphic tablet to draw the character or just with the mouse ?
I just used a mouse for this 😊
I don't even use this software though I came across your channel and video when looking at 2d game art videos. This was a really great watch! Keen for future content!
Wow, thanks! Glad to hear you stuck around and watched it! Hoping to make some more soon :)
Adobe animate or moho? I’m confused on which software I should get, but I plan to use affinity with any.
I used Adobe animate for a long time. My personal experience is even after all the updates, it's a program that just scratches the surface of a lot of great tools without giving you more advanced features. That said, it's still a great and fun program. Personally, I find Moho's bone tools and drawing tools are 100x more fleshed out than Animate. I'd reccomend getting a trail of each one to see what works best for you though.
Wonderful tutorial ! Really, thank you for taking all the time to explain this and so well ! Really a great exposition of the abilities of MOHO 14. Thank you
You're very welcome!
Awesome vid mate. I have just one question about when you added the first textured layer. My texture falls outside the colour selection, how do you keep it within the colour layer. I come from using GIMP where you would 'right click', 'select layer', then paint freely with in that space. Only had Affinity Designer for a couple of days. Cheers.
Hey, so it should mask out properly when you draw on the canvas, but sometimes this issue happens for. me too. If it does, drag your new pixel layer onto the vector layer in the layers panel. You want to make sure the pixel layer is nested inside of the vector one. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching :)
@RSKT_art cheers mate.
Great video. I too had a fair number of driver headaches with my Wacom Intuos. A couple years back I upgraded to a Xencelabs medium tablet bundle and love it! Fantastic pro quality tablet with great software. I also really like the Frankentoon brushes and highly recommend them.
thank you for giving us a clear tutorial ... !!
No problem at all! Glad you found it useful :)
Maaaan! Thank you! After watching 592 videos trying to find what I need, I found you, and you show me what I was looking for and more. You are a great teacher and awesome person, all the tips and books and links, not holding knowledge, but sharing! Thanks dude! (Sorry about my english, I'm brazilian, I hope you understanded me)
Yea the other moho tutorials are so bad haha
So sorry for the late reply! I'm super stoked to hear you found this useful. I really need to jump back into Moho sometime soon and explore it even more. There's definitely a lot to cover still, as I didn't even explore flexi binding in this video. Either way, I'm really glad this one helped people out. Cheers for watching! :)
Hello. I am testing the Affinity Photo for PC. Can you recommend online courses, tutorials or TH-cam channels and books that teach how to make illustration with Affinity Photo? Because I can't find anything to teach with Affinity Photo to illustrate, there is only for photography. Thank you.
Hey, so there isn't really much out there that's Affinity Photo specific. That said, you could basically watch any Photoshop tutorial and it should trabslate over as a lot of the tools are the same.
I’m doing this exact process now it’s a lot to navigate jumping around all the programs imagine throwing blender into the mix 😵💫
Thank you for the good video! I've been thinking about buying the moho program, so this was very helpful. One thing I'd like to do is get the lines to move. If I just select a brush, does the value of the line or the vector I've colored with the brush move without having to specify a value? Or do I need to set them separately?
Hey, sorry for the late reply. I'm not too sure what you mean by this to be honest, so I might not be much help. Did you wind up buying moho?
@@RSKT_art I think I used the sentence with the translator error as it is! Sorry. Maybe I will buy moho soon. Your video was helpful. Thank you!
Man amazing work! really inspiring tutorial! it needs more views
Thanks a ton!
Thanks for making this. There are facets of Blender I feel like I will never get to in the process of learning to use this tool.
Glad it was helpful! Blender's definately gesture packed, but fortunately you don't need to use all of it :)
Love the video! Just a question - when I go to use the freehand tool, the cursor has a four cornered border around it which I can’t seem to get rid of. It makes it difficult to see exactly where I’m starting my lines from. Did you do something to disable this? Thanks!!
Hi, thanks for watching. I'm not really sure what's going on with your cursor though. Maybe there's a setting in preferences? Wish I could help more. If all else fails, the discord is super quick at answering your questions :)
This is legitimately one of the best Moho tutorials I've seen. Excellent job. It really helps to see an artist's perspective of the software rather than a developer's. Do you happen to have much experience with other software that does 2D rigged animation? I'm strongly considering using Moho, but I'm curious how it stacks up to free options like Grease Pencil.
Thanks so much, and sorry for the late reply. So I actually had been trying to use Blender to do this sort of 2D rigging when the 2D animation UI was implemented. While I think grease pencil is amazing, it couldn't quite do this. Fortunately there is a fantastic TH-camr who's been making a Blender plugin that let's you do smart bones and actions. I haven't looked into it yet, but it looks cool. Either way, as far as Moho goes, I think it's great. I do think the UI could use an overhaul, I wish there was a outliner, and I wish some tools were easier to use. That said, none of this undersell what it is. It's a great tool for both solo Animators and teams to make quality animation! Definately give it a go!
Moho - es el mejor programa para animación.
It's pretty great!
Awesome work! How many hours did the animation part take?
Thanks so much! I spent about a week on it (on and off), but I was working most of the time. I guess if I add up the hours it took me a day all up? Probably would have been easier if I roughed it out first.
Can affinity not export psd files? Wouldn't that sovle the layer problem
It definately can! I had issues using it back when I made this though, but it seems to be working now.
Hey! Following along with your tutorial I'm noticing that something must be missing in setting up Smart Bones. For some reason, my actions for torso turn appear as "Regular" instead of "Smart Bones" and I can only animate the turn by scrubbing through the timeline while the action is highlighted. Whenever I try to manipulate the bone in the Mainline, nothing happens. I don't know where I'm going wrong, but it seems like maybe there's an extra step in here that would link the bone to the associated animation when in the normal timeline?
Oh I got it now, it matters which tab you're in when you create a new action! 😅
Haha glad you got it sorted! :)
Thank you for this video. I found your explanations extremely helpful. I've just bought the 3 Affinity apps. So far I am very impressed. Affinity Designer is very fast and quite easy to adapt to. One downside to Affinity Designer though is that I miss the the ability to blend between objects - which as a Freehand user from many years ago, I used a lot. Adobe back then bought out Macromedia and although FreeHand lived for a while there, Adobe let it die.
No problem! It seems with everything going one lately that this video is picking up traction again. I agree, there's definately still a few things I'd like to see added still. That said, since Canva now owns Affinity, they're now aiming for more regular updates. Fingers crossed we see more features added soon!
I'm new to affinity is there any tips on how to change the settings to allow more of a freeform and less stabilized sketch? I have a Wacom tablet and I've turned off the stabilizer and it is still auto correcting the pencil strokes.
Good question! Make sure you're in the pixel persona when sketching. If you're still having issues with that or the vector line work, try making your document larger. I often find the smaller the resolution of my canvas, the more it corrects the stroke. The larger the resolution, the less it seems to. Hope that helps! :)
Nice walkthrough. Thanks dude.
No problem!
❤❤
I'm trying to understand if it's possible to import .psd files into moho instead of redrawing the whole character?
It definately is! Check out their official TH-cam channel. They have a whole series on getting started, which covers importing PSDs Into Moho

Hoping to do some more in the future :) Glad you enjoyed the video!
