Winter Camping in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, Adirondacks
A snowstorm scrubbed a 2 night trip with a friend farther north, so, expecting deep snow for trail breaking, we opted for a shorter hike in to a camp on a beautiful pond in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness of the Adirondacks.
There wasn't nearly as much snow as expected, so we had a pleasant hike in and spent the next 24 hours enjoying the wintery scenery, cooking AMAZING food, and just hanging out.
Felt so good to be back out there! Pungo is recovering well from his pneumonia and I hope to have him back out there with me soon!
Come hang out with us on Instagram!

Great adventure. A beautiful place to paddle and hike. The overlook is amazing in the fall. Happy memories Amy.
Thanks for your on line report and video. You made me want to go as soon as possible to Henderson Lake :-)
Gorgeous...😯😯🚣♂️
Hi enjoyed your video. I was wondering if you could suggest places for car camping near the water in St. Regis area? Thank you.
Nice video always a great day in the adk
What a great campsite. You gals. I’m so jelly. I’ve got to go there soon. They just go a lot of snow. So beautiful. Where do you park?
looks beautiful there! definitely on my list of spots to check out in the adirondacks
that is a beautiful trip. I loved the underwater rock with the paint on it at the end of the video. I have hit that many times and the green paint might be mine. Check out our bog river videos at doc in the highlands. we had site 18 and 27
Great to see my old neighborhood! We camped at gull pond a lot over the years.
Spectacle pond trailhead is just down the road, a little longer approach but another good one. With views of the southside of Pharaoh mountain.
@@toddparis809 it was a tossup between gull and spectacle, the recent snow and heavier packs were why we made the call for Gull. I will absolutely be checking out Spectacle though!
Glad to see you back! Thought you went into lockdown! Looks like you two had a great time! Sad to hear about your dog but glad he's doing better!
Thank you so much! Pungo is doing great, hopefully by March he can get out with me. In the meantime I'm working on Cassi's training, and I want to get her out on some easier trails. She is a RIOT, I can't wait until she's ready for extended trips 😂
Your channel looks great! Joe Geronimo sent me. I'll definitely be watching your Adirondack videos! -Mark
Oh thank you, Mark! :)
Looks like you both had a fun adventure. Is that twig stove the Uberleben?
Yep! I want to use it a lot more this year, sick of the canisters lol
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 as you know I love mine...
@@mrgjoe they are awesome. As long as you get enough wood together before you start lol, hungry little beast! 😂 I think splitting some larger branches is best if you want to actually cook with it. Twigs work for a quick boil.
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 I agree it is a hungry stove. I love how sturdy it is and how large the opening is to feed it.
Thanks for sharing your adventure :) (new subscriber)
Thanks for subscribing, I subbed to your channel as well, looking forward to seeing your adventures!
Quite the magical place!
It really is. One of the hardest routes I've hiked, but still a favorite. Worth all of the difficulty ❤
I really enjoyed this! I have never paddled on the CRF but I would love to canoe camp here.
It's a beautiful spot and I'd love to get to the lean to off the flow. Buggiest place I've EVER camped haha! Keeps the riffraff away!
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 keeping the riff riff away is a good thing...
Great video, thanks for sharing. I love this pond.
Thanks for watching! :) Long Pond is a definite favorite of mine.
I've been to Marcy Dam so many times, but never "Pre Irene", cool pics I didn't think to look it up. The Colden -> Algonquin climb is one of the best!
Yes it was so beautiful when the mountains reflected in the water!! Still special there, but never the same. That hike is definitely a favorite, hard as it is! Worth it! :)
Nice video. Wife and I are thinking about this trip, we're from southwestern PA and we have a 17" Lowe aluminum canoe. How far is the portage to the water from where you park. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
It isn't far if you are able to park in the lot. 100 or 200 feet tops. Get there early, it's a small lot. You can drop your stuff off then go back and park on the road if the lot is full I think, they're cracking down on that in some areas but I think it's still doable there. The ADK are seeing a ton more use everywhere this year with so much stuff closed. If you can, start early on a weekday for the best chance at finding an open campsite. Bring wheels for the carry around the upper dam and it'll be easy. Don't skip the hike to the ridge, it starts there at the upper dam and the views are incredible! It's been a tough year on our beautiful park so I'll only add to please pack out all you pack in, follow Leave No Trace principles. Have a blast! :) -Amy
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 Thanks for the info.we always carry out what we carry in besides it's lighter then.We would come during the week also.
@@MrEveready299 awesome!! Have a great trip, it's definitely a favorite area for us!
Thanks so much! I'm planning a dream trip there to canoe and hike MacNaughton and your info helped so much!
Oh, I'm so glad to hear that! Would love to hear how your trip went! :)
Great stuff Amy... Love the LP-Hoel adventure...
Definitely doing that this year!
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 Let me know when you plan o doing it. If you want company and it works out I'll paddle with you.
Nicely done video. Informative and I love the dog chase scene! Carry a small stove. I love my Coleman two-burner dual fuel. And I carry a Whisperlight in my GO bag for emergency backup. A nice mix of scenery, paddling and camp scenes.
Oh, thank you!! I have been tempted to bring the Coleman a few times and I probably should for real cooking! I had my pocket rocket as backup (and for FAST morning coffee hahaa!) just really wanted to cook on the fire as I had some neat campfire stuff to try :) Thank you for watching!
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 You bet. Always love padding videos and ready for my season in Colorado!
Thanks for putting this one out! Admittedly, I haven't been out to the St. Regis area, but this is definitely making me even more eager to check it out.
Long Pond is a lovely introduction to it, with several pond hopping options from there and Long Pond Mountain is an amazing hike, right up your alley! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful. Anxious to get out there
Me toooooooo! I keep seeing thoughts that the Canadian border may be closed until July or later so....fingers crossed but I'm planning ADK trips for now, and I just might make the Big One, closer to home this year. It'll be nice to spend more time in the Adirondacks anyhow, it's never enough!
Whitney loop?
That Prism is pretty sweet and a stellar day on the ponds!
I do love that boat!! Couldn't believe my luck with weather and foliage color that day. Never expected it to be so bright!
@@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 perfect day...
Will get the hike stats and details ASAP from the GPS and post them on the blog in the next week or so, sorry, family affairs are keeping me busy lately! Still hopeful the batteries lasted to the end of our climb!! If not, well, I'll be going back for the summit loop.
Looks like it was a beautiful day!
A gorgeous Adirondack day!
Great informative video. I want to go canoe camping there one day.
Man I miss the fall color in the Adks. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Give Pungo a treat from me!
Thanks, I'll save some color for your trip up here!
Nice video thanks for sharing. It's good to see the changes in the parking
Thanks Gary! I like the numbered spots, to keep things limited.
Thanks for this! Nice work with mapping out the campsites.
Such an amazing place to live. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for watching! :) -Amy
Music ruined it
Wow - thanks for being you to share with me!
what river is this on ?
Hi Ben, I got curious about this too. I found that the Falls are on "The Branch" which eventually meets up with the Schroon River.
Nice vid overall. sorry don't need the Disco music. Annoying,
Ron Woodard thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it! I'll admit, I struggled with my music choice for this video, and am surprised there weren't more comments like yours. :) I license music from a service, and use a variety for our content. It helps set the tone and makes editing an otherwise boring bunch of hike footage a little easier. See you in the woods! -Amy
A well shot, really pretty video! You know, this reminds me a bit of some of the relaxation videos we watch from time to time. Sometimes we'll put a 4 hour video on of just waterfalls, rainfall or ocean waves. Enjoyed watching this, look forward to the next one! But for some reason now I gotta pee, lol
OTT MOUNTAIN thank you! I do that as well to get to sleep! I Checked out some of your videos last night while doing some trip prep, so fun! "SHRED SOME GNAR!" haaahaha! I wasn't such a water chicken...I may take a white water class this summer....I believe in facing your fears. :)
Haha, yeah LIsa and I try to stick with class 1 to class 3 rapids max. We're not in to the white knuckle stuff. Looking forward to following your next adventure!
OTT MOUNTAIN go check out GOYA (commented below) he does great vids too, and likes the crazy stuff hahaha! FUN! (to watch!)
Yep, good recommendation, we've been following GOYA for a while - those rapids he runs are gnarly, for sure
As a kayaker I could watch this all day
haha I see a place to photograph, you see a paddling challenge! Every photo I've seen of this place the falls were pounding like this.
Hey there, just found your channel and gave you a sub. Like the mixture of stuff you guys have. We do a bunch of hiking/kayaking too, but one thing we don't do is capture those amazing wildlife pictures and videos like you guys do. Looking forward to following you guys!
Ohhhh thanks for reaching out and for the sub! I just subbed to yours as well, looks like we have LOTS in common :) Can't wait to show Chris & Dora! The wildlife stuff - well - I can either get a bunch of miles OR get wildlife footage, usually, sometimes there is just so much going on we stay put and capture it! Thanks again, looking forward to watching your stuff! ~Amy
That is awesome! You guys put in some work to get to that one. The tower looked awesome covered in ice and snow.
Thanks! It was so amazing. And someone went up a couple days later, all of the ice was gone. We go so lucky!
Beautiful place! Thumbs up from Ireland! :)
Drone Girl thank you! :)
Cool looking bird.
looks like an awesome lake to paddle.
Lots of fun! Small (roughly 2 miles long) but lots of interesting coves and places to poke around for a full day. Tons of hiking nearby, too!
Hi!! I really like the pictures!!
Thank you :)

Thank you, it really offers a huge reward for a short paddle! ~Amy :)
