Coming Soon: The EZG
My Wavesport EZG suffered a catastrophic break. The thigh brace ripped loose and tore open the cockpit. I plastic weld it all back together in this sneak preview. Full repair video coming soon.

The Green Narrows: Scary Swim on Gorilla And Fixing the Broken Paddle
มุมมอง 439ปีที่แล้ว
Whitewater kayaking the Green River Narrows in North Carolina. During a warm-up run of Gorilla in preparation for the Green Race, Chris flips and traps his boat in an undercut rock, forcing him to swim. He made it to the bottom unbroken; his paddle did not. He asked if there was anything I could do for his snapped paddle and I told him I'd take a look at it. The repair turned out great and Chri...
The Harper: Kayak Paddle Snapped in Two

Rob snapped his whitewater kayak paddle nearly in the middle of the shaft. This is a fairly straightforward repair using woven carbon fiber sleeve and epoxy resin.
The Rachel: Fixing A Broken Carbon Fiber Kayak Paddle
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
I demonstrate one way to reattach a broken kayak paddle blade. This method uses woven carbon sleeve and epoxy resin. The paddle blade is first attached to the paddle shaft then reinforced with carbon fiber. The repair is finished with an epoxy fill coat and a cross-linked water-based polyurethane.
The Burn: Cracked Kayak Repair with Carbon Fiber and GoPro-Tape
มุมมอง 385ปีที่แล้ว
Fixing my cracked kayak. The hull of my whitewater kayak cracked at the seat mounting bolts. I welded the cracks with a plastic welding heat/air gun with HDPE welding rods, then reinforced the weld and seat mounting area with custom molded carbon fiber backing plates. The seat bolts go through the carbon backing plates, and 3M VHB adhesive was added to the backing plates with hopes of creating ...

    Do you have a specific type of carbon fiber sleeve that you use, my shogun just split in two

    Looks like your Werner Surge paddle snapped in the same place mine did. Was it where the shaft began to slightly ovalise? Seems like a weak point.

    I have an old AT paddle I’d like to refinish. What cross linked polyurethane finish did you use or recommend. I figured I’d end up using an epoxy but maybe I’m wrong?

    Great video, thanks. Was the paddle a bit slippery in the water as it was so smooth?

    • @hotsoupandfiber
      @hotsoupandfiber 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not any more or less slippery than a factory stock paddle shaft.

    What would you recommend for fiberglass shafts? I just had a paddle break somewhat cleanly similar to yours. Werner said I'd have to essentially buy half a paddle as it's a 2-piece which seems ludicrous.

      I generally fix everything with carbon. Unless the repair needs to have VERY similar properties to the original material (like flex), I just repair everything with carbon and epoxy.

      @@hotsoupandfiber Cool, using your video as inspiration I've got most of the materials and will try this out pretty soon! What kinds of tape did you use for the ends, is the blue thin stuff special somehow?

      @@shenanigoon2K It's regular blue painters tape from the hardware store.

      I did a smaller weld repair on my ezg, welds really well. I also put stainless plates under the thigh braces and used stainless screws bolting the ring to the hull. still my favorite boat

      Thanks -- still need to finished the final edit on this repair. Apparently this cockpit crack happened to a lot of EZGs. So far the repair has held up great. Knee braces don't flex at all and paddles great.

    • @ericacome3757
      @ericacome3757 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that there was an issue with production for a bit that caused these failures. Both thigh braces on my EZG have these cracks & I have a Project 52 with the same cracks on 1 thigh brace. Definitely helps to see this exact repair and glad it’s holding up well. I’ll keep an eye out for the full video.

    You can also use talc to thickin epoxy, but some people prefer the consistency silica offers

    • @hotsoupandfiber
      @hotsoupandfiber ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, talc is a fantastic thickener, but it's very heavy so I don't use it for lightweight repairs.

    Have you made your own breakdown 2-piece out of a 1-piece paddle? I am looking to make a 2-piece using a Lettman Vario 26 Joint, but not sure how the diameters will match with a non-Lettman paddle.

    • @hotsoupandfiber
      @hotsoupandfiber ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not. But your concerns are right on -- not sure how the Lettman and the existing paddle would work together. Could take a bit of fiddling and experimenting.

    Awesome repair, amazing video making. Very entertaining. I almost never watch repair videos but I watched this all the way through. The part where you flattened the carbon had me rolling 🤭. Love how you ended by coming full circle - showing Chris killing it on the fish ladder with the repaired paddle.
