    Thank you Agripina! Here are some useful dates from my correspondence with American historian on the Philippines Dr. Michael Cullinane, author of The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750-1900 (USC Publishing House, 2022): * Don Antonio Sanson dead by 1886 * Doña Juana Osmeña y Suico born 1858 * Don Sergio Osmeña born 9 September 1878

  • @TheTeacherbel
    @TheTeacherbel ปีที่แล้ว

    Perhaps, it is most appropriate to use the word "biological" in establishing relationships. Historial records appear to show that the biological father never formally and indirectly accepted his fatherhood of Pres. Osmena Sr. It was Don Pedro Gotiangco who did. So today, usually society would consider Don Pedro as the "real" father, while Don Sanson was "only" the biological father of Pres. Sergio Osmena Sr.

    Same question. Is it already usual then for 14 year olds to go on dalliances with much older men? The first time I heard this paternal mystery as a young student, I thought there was force and violence--that maybe little Juana was raped.

    • @TheTeacherbel
      @TheTeacherbel ปีที่แล้ว

      That was what I thought so..On second thought, when a young woman is raped, she should lose her mind. There was no such story. In fact, Juana Osmena y Suico eventually married Pedro Gotiangco who posed as Osmena Sr. father.

      @@TheTeacherbel "when a young woman is raped, she should lose her mind." "SHOULD"?!! And what medical/psychiatric basis does your rather bluntly misogynistic statement have? Pray tell...rather "teach"...

      In my opinion it was rape as she must have been too young to understand what was going on. My guess is that it was definitely a scandal that was covered up because of the reputation and power of the people involved. At this time, they had different ideas on when a girl was a woman, ready to marry, age of consent, and such. A 22 year old guy marrying a 15 girl was standard back then, while today he would be jailed.

    With the supposedly strict upbringing of old socially prominent families in major Philippine cities ruled by the (hypocritical) Spanish Catholic colonialists like Cebu, the next interesting reveal for whoever cares about this genealogical who-done-it would be how Juana Osmena and Antonio Sanson found the opportune time to have a sexual liaison and procreate. Was there a real romantic involvement between the two of them? Was it an act of rebellion against a rigid society's constraints on the part of the young maiden? Was Antonio Sanson a dashing Lothario who wouldn't take "no" from the object of his intended conquests? BTW, It's especially remarkable that, after being knocked up, Juana Osmena got a Cebu City street named after her. @ResilMojares, other types of historical buffs want to know... 🤔

    I think the pronounciaton is mahilom, not maksilom, just xavier, roxas, etc. However because of our English influence, maksilom is now the more accepted pronounciation.

    Hi I am a foreigner who just moved to the Philippines to retire permanently in the Visayas region, presently living in Cebu. I have struggled to find any decent material on the internet to help me learn Bisaya. I have resorted to using some of the Palm grass Bisaya music videos to learn by singing, which has given me a better ear for the language, but what I really need is an instructional program with interaction with native speakers, which seems quite impossible to find. Bisaya will be my fifth language and I have a genuine talent with languages, but there is only so much progress that can be accomplished alone without instruction. If anyone knows of any resources for me to learn Bisaya, please respond here, I would really appreciate it. I doubt that I am the only foreigner who could use help to learn Bisaya. My grandfather was a French speaking Acadien in northern Maine and he never spoke English until he started school, just like many Bisaya speakers. After he started school, he was forbidden to speak French in school. He and my grandmother never taught their children French or spoke it with them. Now, 75 years later, I am the only one of his many grandchildren who speaks French. I remember trying to speak French with my grandfather while he was alive, but it was extremely difficult to converse much because the Parisian French that I learned in school was quite different from his Acadien French. Don't let Bisaya die out like Acadien French has in Maine, there are very few left now who speak it. I do not think that the Philippine government will do much to assist you ,when it is busy keeping Tagalog the official language, to help you. Take action now to promote Bisaya on your own terms rather than waiting for Manila to help you. Incidentally, I think that Bisaya speakers have better pronunciation of English and I have very little trouble understanding their spoken English. They are also some of the kindest and hospitable people that I have encountered anywhere in the world. I am already enjoying my new life here in retirement. Translated by google, not me: Kumusta usa ko ka langyaw nga bag-o lang mibalhin sa Pilipinas aron permanenteng magretiro sa Visayas region, kasamtangang nagpuyo sa Cebu. Nanglimbasog ko sa pagpangita og bisan unsang desente nga materyal sa internet aron matabangan ko nga makat-on og Bisaya. Gigamit nako ang pipila ka mga music video sa Palm grass Bisaya aron makat-on pinaagi sa pag-awit, nga nakahatag kanako og mas maayong dalunggan alang sa pinulongan, apan ang akong gikinahanglan mao ang programa sa pagtudlo nga adunay interaksyon sa lumad nga mga mamumulong, nga morag imposible nga makit-an. . Ang Bisaya maoy akong ikalima nga lengguwahe ug duna koy tinuod nga talento sa mga pinulongan, apan adunay daghan kaayong pag-uswag nga mahimo nga mag-inusara nga walay pagtudlo. Kung kinsa man ang nakahibalo sa bisan unsang mga kapanguhaan aron makat-on ako sa Bisaya, palihug tubaga dinhi, mapasalamaton kaayo ako niini. Nagduda ko nga ako ra ang langyaw nga makagamit ug tabang sa pagkat-on sa Bisaya. Ang akong apohan usa ka French speaking Acadien sa amihanang Maine ug wala gyud siya makasulti og English hangtod nga nagsugod siya sa pag-eskwela, sama sa daghang mga mamumulong sa Bisaya. Human siya nagsugod sa pag-eskwela, gidid-an siya sa pagsulti og French sa eskwelahan. Siya ug ang akong lola wala gayud magtudlo sa ilang mga anak og French o makigsulti niini uban kanila. Karon, 75 ka tuig na ang milabay, ako ra ang usa sa iyang daghang apo nga nagsultig Pranses. Nahinumdom ko nga misulay ko sa pagsultig French uban sa akong apohan samtang buhi pa siya, apan lisod kaayong makig-estorya tungod kay ang Parisian French nga akong nakat-onan sa eskuylahan lahi ra sa iyang Acadien French. Ayaw pasagdi nga mamatay ang Bisaya sama sa Acadien French sa Maine, gamay na lang ang nahabilin karon nga nagsulti niini. Sa akong hunahuna dili dako ang mahimo sa gobyerno sa Pilipinas sa pagtabang kanimo, kung kini nagkapuliki sa paghupot sa Tagalog nga opisyal nga pinulongan, aron sa pagtabang kanimo. Aksyon na karon para i-promote ang Bisaya sa imong kaugalingong termino kaysa maghulat nga tabangan ka sa Manila. Sa tinuud, nagtuo ko nga ang mga mamumulong sa Bisaya adunay mas maayo nga paglitok sa English ug gamay ra ang akong problema sa pagsabut sa ilang gisulti nga English. Sila usab ang pipila sa labing buotan ug maabiabihon nga mga tawo nga akong nahimamat bisan asa sa kalibotan. Nalingaw na ko sa akong bag-ong kinabuhi dinhi sa pagretiro.

    The nearest term for Babaylan is "Shaman" not witch. Spaniards persecuted them and called them witches although not necessary the case. Again, Babaylans are not witches!
