Very nice video. What #16 olive were you using, and did you think the pattern makes a difference ?
Hi Roderick, I really enjoyed watching your video. I'm looking to upgrade my landing net, the one you have in the video looks great. Who is the manufacture and where did you buy it?
@@GoneFishingNow Hi I found the net at UTTINGS online the make is Fishpond it cost the earth but best I have seen. Regards Rod
Very nice fish, and video.
Thanks 👍
Hello Roderick always enjoy your video’s, I fished Hury last year the water was a lot higher then but still enjoyed my day pity it’s eighty miles from my house in Leeds. Not many opportunities down here to fly fish. 🎣
@@peterb443 Hi I know how you feel my favourite fishing is 350 miles to the north of me, try a long weekend and fish Hurry for a couple of days. Regards Rod
What dries were you using please?
Hi I think when I lost the two big fish, a Zulu on the dropper and a white aero wing on the tail fly , size 8 and 14. I make lots of flies for dry fly fishing that are not true to pattern, just lots of colour versions to match what I see on the water. My basic still water setup is a large fly on the dropper and a small fly on the tail , I go down to size 18 a lot of the time, the big fly helps you see the gentle takes on the small fly. Hope this helps. Rod
beautiful rod movement, majestic
Thank you very much! 😊
Some lovely fish there as well as the river, a nice relaxing watch. Well done.
Many thanks 👍
What a beautiful place to catch the wild 'uns. I would have preferred to see you using a landing net rather than hauling them out and using dry hands to take the hook out!
Hands were not dry the air was full of rain, I can assure you all the fish were okay. Rod
I really enjoyed your video and think you did a good way of showing how you can catch sea trout in daylight! Many people I’ve spoken to over the years have stated that you can’t catch them unless it’s dark. Fortunately I myself knocked that one out of the park, like you it can be done. One thing I’d like to mention which you picked up on is about people thrashing the water with spinners, well I used to feel the same about this, until a group of us (6 in fact) fishing on the Welsh Dee . Five of us were spinning, myself included when John K said you guys go first and he had a 15 foot split cane fly rod with a salmon fly on and he pulled out a beautiful salmon. Since then it never bothered me if guys spin before I use a fly. I think it can wind the fish up into getting aggressive and then a fly gets the reward.
Hi salmon are different to sea trout I have witnessed a dog made to swim a salmon pool to as they said wake the fish up and it worked, but sea trout will not tolerate that. Thanks for your comments. Regards Rod
awsome video 👌👌👌 and really relaxing music
Thanks I just hope I carry on getting it right. Regards Rod
Lovely video. You are right about wild fish.
Many many 👍
Well done
😁👍
I know that stretch, its one of my beats but I've not fished it yet. What flies do you find work well on there ? 😊😊👍👍
I find they are not too fussy most of the time I will start small trying to match the hatch then if that fails I go two or three sizes bigger than works at times when there are a few mayflies about. Regards Rod
Fine trout for a small river 👍
Thanks 😊
I fished Cow Green a week after this video was posted. I had a fantasic day fishing size 12 wets on a floating line. I went from the car park on the north shore all the way down to the river. Hard work on foot but worth the effort as I managed some decent fish for this water.
When I have a bit more get up and go, I will do as you did, a great place to fish, thanks for the comments. Regards Rod
My Dad passed away 2 weeks ago. Our last trip was up to Cowgreen. He loved his fly fishing and went to Cowgreen all the time. Thanks for the video.😢
A very moving comment, hope to be back there soon. I hope to bump into you in the future and have a chat about your Dad. Best wishes Rod.
Are you trying to charm the fish with the music 🎶 😊😂nice stream tight lines
It all helps 😁
Nice relaxing bit of water. Which river is that, it looks familiar. Swale ?
You are of a bit it is the Annan. Rod
your channel came up on my recommended page, so therapeutic to watch. thank you
Thanks, please check out some of my other videos they are all at much the same pace, I hate over expressions that seems to me so far removed from the gentle art of fly fishing. Regards Rod
What time of day is that ?
10am when I started after noon the river went dead, I tried wet fly for nothing. Rod
Looks like they are rising subsurface.
I think some were but I felt three for just a second. 😁
Hi Rod, can I ask what size rod and line weight you use for rivers please? Kind regards Arthur
Hi I like long soft rods, the main ones I used Drift 10ft 3 weight, Snowbee 9-6ft 3 weight and a 10ft 4 weight Hardy for bigger wet flies. Soft rods are better at playing fish on small hooks but whatever you use you have to feel at home with it. Regards Rod
I’m unsubscribing I don’t understand the need for the music in your videos why can’t we just hear the sounds of nature
Hi, sorry to lose you, I obviously chose the wrong track . I have had a lot of feedback in the beginning that a bit of music in the background is whats wanted. Tight lines Rod
I totally agree with this gentleman about music in any fly fishing video you don’t need it , you make some really good videos but any music spoils them, the worst are those who have rock music 😂
I don’t mean you have rock music in your videos,
@@user-he4ol1uw2s I promise it will be lower key next one
Looks like a really nice place to fish never tried it myself is it easy to get to from ashington. Thanks for sharing
It really is! 😁
Evertime i go to fontburn i avoid the shop side the banks are far to high. I like to go on the other side much easier to fish and land them it gets busy in the summer but if i go early enough i normally get a good spot
Hi I do think it is a better bait fishery than fly due to the few places you can get a line out. For me it is a long way to go when there are better options closer to home. Thanks for your comments. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 Yeah totally agree it's far to easy to get caught in a tree unless you can get on the bit next to the shop but that's nearly always busy
Looks like a wonderful place to fish, thank you.
It sure is 😁
We have a local river just like this, as in you need an expedition team to get to the water in order to fish due to the extreme overgrowth. As for the geese, I can understand your plight, the local swans have kept them at bay for some time recently, whereas before this they were very noisy and disturbing on the still water I fish.
The geese followed me down the reservoir, I have the knack of bonding with anything that gets on my nerves. Regards Rod
Thank you for your video and your visit to Sweethope. Many thanks Lisa Meadows.
You are welcome, I hope to be back on Monday 😄
looked like a great days fishing and excellent value. Thanks for showing 👍
Thank you, I will be back soon to fish the big lake. Regards Rod
How much does it cost to fish there ? And any idea why Langley was shut ?
Hi Langley may have been open, I was told by a fisherman at Sweethope that you can just start fishing and at some time they come round for the money. Ticket prices is based on hours and fish taken I £20 ,£40 sorry I did not get a price list. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 Thank you
Any chance of stopping the background music I would rather hear the wind and the waves the piano music u played on the cow green videos was very strange still enjoy your fishing and commentary
great vid. thankyou for sharing. what was your leader/tippet setup and length?
Hi, first use a full action fly rod that takes a light line, sea trout have when strait from the sea soft mouths so the hook can jerk out with a stiff rod. Next when you do a bad cast leave it to swing round past the fish before recasting , fly lines hitting the water hard is the best way to scare the fish. leader strength min 6lb up to 10lb, cast length 3 to 5 yards. The nylon that I like is Maxima ultra green or Stroft GTM , Stroft is very thin. Flies need to be on good hooks I often place lead on the under body to stop them from skimming on the surface. Good luck. Rod
@@roderickwalker491 thankyou for taking the time to reply with such an in depth answer this helped me so much. Love the channel. All the best with your fishing.
One of my favorite lenses! It’s a beauty.
It is top end and so well made Regards Rod
Looks like somewhere to fish from a boat. Still it's good it's browns.
Hi boats are the way to go but the stocking is rainbows I think a lot of them have become bottom feeders due to the large amount of ground bait used. Regards Rod
If it can support browns naturally you have to wonder why they are stocking with rainbows.
Must have been a very disappointing trip for you. Thought we might have seen you on the river this week trying for a seatrout after the recent flood.
Yes I would like to doing that but the days I could fish the floods were a bit on the high side. Rod
always wanted to try fontburn now I'll not bother , stick to hury, chatton, thrunton and sharply
I do not like to be negative about a fishery, but if they want fly fishers they need boats. Thanks 👍
I'm glad you shared this, I was thinking of trying Fontburn. I've dodged a bullet thanks.
Pleased to be of help 😊
Well done. Proper fly fishing. None of the pellet fed rainbow rubbish there. Don't get me wrong I fish for rainbows at times but love fishing for our native wild fish. What I think is troubling is the way fishing has gone with stockies and the competition fishing ethos, a culture has crept in over the years where people expect and demand high stocking rates and unrealistic numbers and size of fish. Blanking is now regarded with almost disgust and shame when it's a healthy part of natural fishing. The methods have also been degraded to the point that there is little to no respect for the heritage of our sport a sort of do what you like, anything goes with a whole strain of fly-fishing barely discernible from float fishing.
I really love your comments. 100,% Agree. Rod
@@roderickwalker491 thanks Rod, it needs saying. Tight lines.
Cow Green is an absolute gem of significant national importance as a wild brown trout fishery (our native fish that we should be protecting and championing across our waters). Love the place. I find I catch well fishing it traditionally, on the move, step and cast with traditional loch flies and methods. As with such fishing the wind can be a benefit if you can adjust your casting and retrieve to suit varying conditions. Had great days there when it was blowing hard tripping Ordies or retrieving a daddy long legs or Grouse and Green if mid to late in the year. Otherwise typical patterns work but read and work round the water as needed for proper brown trout fishing.
You are right I do cover a lot of the shore more than the video shows, I tried the big flies and hoppers as you suggested but I think due to the strange weather we have had I am trying that stuff to early. Regards Rod
@@roderickwalker491 this time of year I would fish a Kate McLaren on the bob and something like a Peter Ross, Goats Toe or GRHE nymph on the point. Unless it's very still I would cast out leave static briefly and then retrieve quickly, hanging the fly at the end like you would from a boat. How quickly depends a bit on conditions, features and experience.
I enjoyed thanks buddy
Thanks to you👍
I see you were wearing sensible footwear.
For once, do not count on it again, it is not on unless I fall at least twice 😊
@@roderickwalker491 ???
There is more to fishing than catching fish although one or two is a nice bonus but you can enjoy the walk and scenery. Tight lines 🏴.
You are right but I do like to post some activity from our finny friends.😄
I'd be interested in other people's experience, but I find at Cow Green the wind can really kill sport, so I always look for the most sheltered areas. I don't know what your energy levels are like, but with the wind in that direction, you might've done better walking down to the dam and across onto the other bank. Health issues ate keeping me at home this year, so it's particularly intetesting to hear how you do on these Teesdale reservoirs. Thanks for the vids, and I look forward to more of your adventures.
Thanks, I hope to do the long walk to the other side in a week or so but for now back to the rainbows. Regards Rod
A just got a new 8 foot 5 wait rod loveing it got to wild rainbows first day our about 3 pounds both then really nice rod fight was amazing going to get ma dad one tomorrow
Well done just do not get fed up when the fish get moody. Rod
The adventure is just as important as the catching as long as you get to enjoy the day. Thanks for sharing.
You got that right! 👍
Thats a very nice video especially with the music.
Thanks , I find that most viewers like a bit of music and a few hate it so I try to keep it on the low volume side so I hope to keep all happy. Thanks again for your comments. Regards Rod

Very intetesting vid. If there's a gentle westerly breeze, I like fishing off the Cumbrian shore at Cow Green, especially later in summer. Your experience is similar to mine, if the fish aren't in the mood, they're hard to tempt, but on the right day it's magic. Dry black hopper my go-to in decent conditions.
Hi I fished today, very cold few fish feeding I had a poor day so no video but I will be back on a better day. Regards Rod
