Man I really feel for you. I thought my unit was misbehaving but it's not as bad as what I read in YOUR post. Mine is that it's OK for NON-recording 90+% of time. It get dicey when recording though. Roll the dice & maybe nothing happens that time. Next time though, not so lucky. After 25-30 minutes, overheat auto-shutdown. Let it cool down. 15 min cooldown minimum. wipe it off with coldwater damp cloth. dry. Crank it back up. FUCK. made it only 15 minutes next time. then 12 minutes, then 10 minutes...etc... Mine, once it overheat-auto-shutdowns that 1st time, SCREWED, no matter if let cooldown/wipedown etc etc, the subsequent recordings progressively 1,2,3 one-after-another-in-a-row back-to-back diminish down to such short time frames, so eFFing quick, ya wanna chuck the M.eFFer out the window.

I saw a video by a guy about 3-4 years ago about overheating on Sony Alpha 5000/6000-series cameras showing how he got these little mini plastic ice-pak thingies, about 2"-3" square & about 1.5" thick, same kind sold to be used as real-ice substitutes in camping coolers etc, and the guy showed how he put a thin washcloth between the mini ice-paks and the camera body (off-center to the side so as not to obstruct the articulating LCD monitor screen) and combined with a skinny light rubber band just enough to prevent slip-off, that it was effective in stopping overheating. The mini ice-paks were pretty inexpensive too, he had an Amazon link, sorry but I don't have it right this moment. I've been considering trying that with this, seems the size dimensions and heat levels are very similar, I think should work. But I can't verify that right now from firsthand experience, not yet anyway....

*Are they really better ?* I've got the cash. I know smallHD ain't cheap. I was looking into BM Video Assist 4K and wound up here. I have a Ninja V & it doesn't always overheat but sometimes, about half the time hit or miss no rhyme or reason, mysteriously _after a half-hour recording_ even if I let it cool down , after that first overheat-auto-self-shutdown, any recordings afterward can't be more than 15-20 mins and progressively less after each one, by the 3rd/4th it's a crapshoot to get more than 10 minutes. That's just totally f&k.ked up for something that costs this much. But I heard even BM Video Assist's have reported overheating. I read a couple threads on reddit about this by users who claimed they went back and bought _older_ *used* Atomos Shogun *FLAMES* _(not "Infernos")_ which are 7" as opposed to Ninja V's 5" and avg cost used $450-$550 but they claimed they didn't have the overheating issues with the larger sized device. I have nothing to verify that. Only what I read. Then I read ur thread about SmallHD, and I always heard they were really great, but are also pretty pricey. I don't just trust only hearing about fans & heatsinks anymore, that's apparently just a marketing trick, since those so-called fans and heatsinks don't seem to be enough...

And they cost $2K USD new. and I found out in the time I posted that a few weeks back, although much rarer than Atomos, even smallHD can sometimes overheat. I saw just a few reports of it, nowhere even near the scale of all the reports about Ninja V (including my own)... I'm still up in the air... $2K a lot to play russian roulette with... I'm getting a Panasonic S5IIX that doesn't need recording, I'm finished with Atomos, but I still want an external monitor, and I do NOT want one that I'm worried can shut off unexpectedly at any time.... They claim they have fans in them that are supposed to make overheating not happen. Yeah, right.... those fans are a joke.... effective as piss in a hurricane if you ask me...

@@HUSTLMedia That's not what you said in your video. Rewatch it urself. Bud, You said the _exact opposite,_ that metal housings were hotter versus plastic being cooler, that you stopped using Angelbird *metal housing* (beginning at 5:54 ), despite it being shorter & fitting better nicer etc, specifically because its' *metal housing* _compounded the heat problem,_ so you went back to ur other plastic housing SSD drives... Maybe you flip-flopped ur intended wording, inadvertently, by mistake ? We're all human, hopefully you just got ahead of urself, and meant what your reply-post said, but in REVERSE ORDER.... It was nice of you to show how to access the cooling settings though.. Not that it helps much, unfortunately. 😎 *[ EDIT ] :* - - FYI ... for the record, I have WD 1 TB SSD - - the insertable drive enclosure is *plastic* - - drive works great. until MthrFking Ninja V overheats.. Ninja V will overheat after 3hrs, sometime after 4hrs continuous record, and gradually, 1/3 of the screen will glitching and turned off (still recording though), and then the next 2/3 glitching, dimming and then finally just 1/3 of the screen work. If 1 hr in a nice air conditioned cool room cooldown isn't long enough then that product is *defective* , IMHO, no matter what anyone else tells me. Ive read that the hdmi is protected but on the Ninja its enough to just switch off the HDCP on the console to turn off the protection. In theory should be the same about the Black Magic one .

@@thesteammachine1282 I looked into BM Vid Assist & Connect both, & heard they also can fry an egg. Of course those are posts as feedback just like these, so they're "unconfirmed", I can't vouch about those, or to what extent... I'm still begrudgingly on the fence about Atomos, because I did come across a number of posts that the larger 7" shogun flame (flame not inferno) seemed to be more stable in not overheating as compared to the 5" V. That I read by a few who swapped over from V to Flame and said they noticed immediately that if and when it ever overheated was only after very extended use durations. I'm considering experimenting with a used Flame if I can find one in good working condition. I'm just very cautious about pissing away hundreds of dollars on buggy or unreliable gear. Man we both know we can easily find other uses for it, I'm not gonna burn it on hamburgers, I can get new cage & rigging accessories with how much money I've pissed away over years... At this point for me however, I care more about not overheating than the feature of Atomos being both monitor/recorder. I'm prepping to get a panasonic s5IIX, which has video output external recording via usb-c direct to external SSD, along with great ibis and pdaf, direct baking in of LUTS, plus H.265 mentioned in ur post that's lacking in the BM Vid Assist). I'm no gamer personally, so the point you made referring to a project involving gaming consoles, I'm lost in the weeds about that type of discussion, admittedly. Best of luck regarding that....

@@jimthrowaway I completely understand you mate 👍 . After digging around now im even more puzzled with the BMagic recorder as there seems to be a lot of outdated info on which sd cards or usb c devices to use with it. Seems quite picky which is worrying . On one hand one can easily pick up something like a SanDisk Extreme SSD or even play with the idea of a nvme with usb c, but here is the problem. From what I see, the Black Magic recorders are using usb c 3.1 get 1 so if lucky, this will get up to 5gb/s .(i kind of doubt it) . Than we have the high end external ssds. Unless you have on the pc usb C 3.1 gen 2 or usb c 3.2 you are loosing time. Than I read that those external ssds that are usb c, dont come near the advertised speed, and when they get hot, they throttle to something like 30-40mb/s which will not work for 4k video at all ! Right now Im looking at that ANDYCINE Lunchbox II for the atomos. Youve probably seen it. You just have to put inside that metal case the insides of lets say a samsung 870 evo . The reason im looking at it, as it is so small, when in place, the fan vent area of the atomos is completely opened and I highly suspect that this might help prevent or fix the overheating issue . A normal ssd (due to its length) always blocks the main vent for air. I suspect this might be a fix for the atomos . Another thing Ive found to help with the overheating on the atomos is that you have to change in the menu the overheat warning setting to high . Its in the toolbox area -> Power Setting Option -> Auto Power OFF Temp -> Change to high. My best guess is that with that setting and moving the ssd to a ANDYCINE Lunchbox II case, the overheating might be solved or at least it will hold for hours to finish the work.

Thanks for sharing. I live in the Caribbean so I can tell you about hot climate, but I must admit I don't have that much issue with overheating on my Ninja V. I too have the plastic caddy as well as two Angelbird metal SSD, but I recently purchased the "Andycine Lunchbox" and these are (I hate this overused word..but..) game changers. But what I really like about them is the short/smaller footprint size thus allowing ventilation for the back vents of the Ninja V. So I would highly recommend looking into it on youtube and reviews online. Cheers and keep up the good work.

Yes, you should not use this lens for video. Sounds like user incompetence.

There are people who used this lens on full length feature films , & what happened here is a good lens in wrong hands you really don't know how to use it & trying to figure out negative sides which is really funny .
