Buying And Fixing The Coolest Lawn Mower Ever Made!
For as long as I can remember I have loved the look of the John Deere 430 Diesel powered garden tractor. I seized the opportunity to get one for cheap, but it needs some serious TLC.

Fixing The Cheapest Diesel Dump Truck I Could Find

I acquired this 1983 Ford F350 6.9L IDI Diesel dump truck my my neighbor. But can I get it back on the road?
Did you end up selling the gravely? I have the twin cylinder commercial version of that and need a few parts.
I thought DOT tape had to be 50% of length??
No sound is pissing me off
Looks Pretty good from here Pal..
Loser
Dude, that came out awesome!
I WAS WATCHING AND SAW YOU ABOUT TO PUT THE BATTERY TERMINALS ON...THEN I THOUGHT...I WOULD CLEAN THOSE. THEN YOU PULLED OUT THE SAME TOOL I USE...AND CLEANED THEM. I WAS LIKE...THIS KID UNDERSTANDS. HE GETS IT. 99.99% OF MY COMMENTS ARE TROLLING OR JUST PLAIN MEAN, SO THIS IS VERY RARE FOR ME TO BE NICE.
Grandad had a 425 all wheel steer, he passed and i have his x475 all wheel steer, they are the best you can get
Just got a well used x495 myself, a few things here and there and I got it running, mine gad a busted left tail as well.... It is a pleasure to drive, as its a beast compared to my 600 hr d160, albeit even the latter was just was treated to a k66 trans upgrade and a 325 front axle with custom front kingpin/pindles allowing for 5x4.5 wheels rims up front to match the rear.....
I had a 92 420 I used winter and summer for 24 years mowing 4 acres and pushing snow. I replaced it in 2016 with a 1025R. The 420 &430 were a great tractor
Did you change the oil in your mower gearbox it is very expensive
Solid job, nice to see you get it restored up to your purpose.
Just watched your video, good job on the refurbishment. I did the same with my LA145 someone abandoned. A word of advice, if you want to bring the paint back to life, get some Mothers mag and aluminum polish. A foam ball in the cordless drill plus the polish will make the paint look like new again. It's a very gentle compound that does not hurt the paint at all. I used it on mine, it has the plastic hood molded in jd green, but it was so oxidized that it looked like a chalkboard. The Mother's polish resored it to a high gloss. Your painted hood might need to be wet sanded and buffed out, or wet sanded and clear coated to give it the shine you're looking for.
Great job keep up the good work thank you
I worked for a local School district for 35 years. We had four of these. One had the hand lever and the other three had foot pedals. The guys drove them as if they were a hydro around shrubs and other obstacles. Problem was when they did that, they were slipping the clutch to go slow and the next thing you know the clutch would be glazed over and you would have to pull it and sand the surface to remove that glaze. I told them to shift to a slower gear and lock the pedal down, but they never listened. One other issue I had with them was replacement parts were ridiculous in price.
Did you change the coolant?
Never mind
Nice work 👍 Stay well, Joe Z
Very informative lawn tractor repair video. Hipa supplies high quality and affordable parts for small engines. You see, you know a lot of the knowledge and tricks about small engine repair, maybe we could collaborate to help more DIY repairers if you would like to.
My brother bought and restored a 1984 430 several years ago, rebuilt the Yanmar engine, replaced the fuel pump, new paint. Looks nice. As I recall, these 430s with a 60" deck sold new for almost $10,000 which is a crazy amount of money.
Yeah, about $21,000 in today's money. You can buy an 1125r or BX2680 for that!
I got the 425 and it came with the 3pt and PTO coupler. These things are stout! Though I'm envious of the torque of the diesel for getting implements started spinning but I won't complain too much since I went out of my way to get the most compact of the real (horizontal engine) tractors.
Probably only surpased by kubota.
Prolly spent more on the J/D OEM than you did on the tractor... Depending on what cheap is for you....$14 for that rubber gasket... J/D scr*ws everyone
my is a 70'' hi deck .turfcat t628d
Awesome!
Most excellent young man! You have done well!!! Very nice to see you fixed up a great Garden tractor! What size is the cutting deck?
I dont think you botched the hood mod for the lightbar, it just doesn't look that great bc it has gaps. Line up the light bar a bit further out and make a black plastic bezel for it and it would look a lot better i think!
BROTHER!!! Please don’t skip or fast forward that pressure washing baby, that’s like gold to a man. AMSR
I worked at a golf course as Assistant grounds keeper for a few years as a young man and my favorite job was mowing the roughs that looked like your yard on the 430. I’d throttle it up about 3/4 and pull the yellow switch and rip through shit at about half speed. It was about 5 golf balls an hour through the machine and that would wake you up. Once I even put one through the neighbors window. I liked the deer better than the big Toro groundsmaster fairway mower. It was so fun to run, I will never forget it. That was about 30 years ago.
As mentioned already, if mowing in high grass at high outdoor temps be careful of overheat. I overheated mine and caused the head gasket seal to leak into one cylinder causing extreme wear on the cylinder. By the time I caught it the cylinder was out of wear spec. I bought a new Yanmar short block from Deere and now have a new engine. I also installed a temp gauge on the dash, there is already a place to screw in the sensor near the water pump so installation was easy, Runs about 160 degrees under light load. Side note there also turned out to be a small hole in the exhaust muffler pipe in the engine compartment pumping hot air into engine area, hole was out of sight until I removed old block and removed muffler. That one had me baffled.
My next door neighbor had one of these. Over 5000 hours on it and still going strong. Love the way they sound whan mowing.
very nice job! are the mower belts exposed like that is there a cover plate for them?
What are you selling it for ?
i have 318 but looks like you have same issue i have in tall grass it doesnt cut it all i bought a woods estate grooming mower 3 point no more belt problems and cut way better 8 gal gas on 318 1 gal dsl on my tractor
I had a 318 for 30 years so I can appreciate your 430. I now have an X758. I hope you'll enjoy your 430 for many years!
That was an awesome rebuild and you can lay a bead like a madman! loved the video!!
It's a lawn mower and I love your videos
The classic Deere 300 & 400 series machines are still miles ahead of their time. They really were THE machine to have back in the day.
Looks good man, i wish i could find a 24’ deck over gooseneck that the dovetail raises and locks up at deck level
looks good to me. nice job 😊
Nice god bless
I would have sandblasted it before I painted it..😎
Thanks for the inspiration great video
what is the maximum capacity of this equipment trailer? what is the size of the middle I-beam?
I had one many year ago
I hear you on those old 430s! They are beautiful looking tractors. I would love to find one. the only thing I would do is figure out how to make it foot pedal instead of handle drive.
Change your hitch before you take it out on any highway. You have absolutely zero sway control with the hitch. That type of hitch is only good for pulling hay bales around the farm.
Thats a pintle hitch and on every HD equiptment trailer that hauls excavators and bulldozers on the road every day, what do you see wrong with it?
@@young11984at a higher speed you run the risk of trailer sway, the back end of the trailer begins to sway side to side which leads to the trailer controlling the direction of the truck. By using a Reese hitch with sway control bars along the sides of the hitch eliminates the risk of “the tail wagging the dog.” These use to be a standard practice in pulling trailers off a ball. Placing whatever you are carrying closer to the truck helps, but basically limits you to lower speeds. Even an inch of play could start causing it to sway. It’s a simple fix of unbolting the old hitch and bolting a Reese to the trailer frame.
@@brianswanigan9891 thats why you have trailer brakes and balance the load on the trailer vs drive it all way to the nose squatting the tow vehicle and unloading the rear axle of the trailer. Those pintle hitches are rated for 5-10klb tongue weight and there is no ball style hitch or ball rated for that weight. Been towing trailers with everything from toy cars to dump trucks on pintle hitches and NEVER had one sway and never had sway nannies either. Only ever seen them on campers and have never ever seen them on any brand of heavy equiptment trailers
@@young11984 good luck to you then. I wish safe travels.
Great job on the grill and hood, I copped out and spent the money on a new grill when I rebuilt my 1992 430, it will last you along time if you keep good care of it. Just a helpful hint, when changing the Hyd. oil pull the top hose off the site glass and it will fill way faster, other than that just keep up with the regular maintenance and enjoy! They definitely are grass eating beasts.
WTH didint you just get two new taillights so they both match and damn it Boy a mower with a radiator and runs off diesel thats badass you should of sanded and painted the bottom of deck to prevent further rusting
The gravely has 4 low gear , "grannies " speeds , that would cut through any grass . You have to have patience,
