This video benefits from being BBC1 Grandstand coverage - this race came a few weeks after Jags won at Le Mans, the Beeb got so much grief for NOT covering that race, they went overboard to cover this one, and got a great race too. We were at both races, epic days when Group C was and still is the very best, most entertaining, most competitive, motorsport, FAR better than boring F1 both then and now.

I was lucky enough to have a grandstand seat on the start/finish line on the straight, I have never heard an engine scream like the Jag's unbelievable, and the Jag's were running engines developed from their road going cars incredible. The contrast between the low rumble of the Mercs and the screaming cats. Best race I've ever been to, unfortunately those halcyon days are now gone, so lucky to have watched these magnificent beasts.
I was there and right by that accident. Remember it like it was yesterday.
A golden era of motorsport right there. V12s... V8s.. And Flat 6s..never to be repeated sadly.
Ahh this is such a good time capsule..so much better edited than today's wec highlights; brilliant commentator & ad hoc pitlane interviewers. Well enjoyed that.

I dont know how kovalainen get to formula 1, he was most dangerous driver we have seen in long time.. What a stupid killing move was this... Kovalainen was bad driver who never got anything except beeing dangerous....
That was not good defending from Kovalainen as the commentator said, that was dangerous blocking, and that crash is case in point.
Completely agree! Fortunately we are seeing fewer of this kind of accident these days with attention being brought to the dangers of 'movement under braking' whilst defending.
Watts was also never making it inside him with the way the track bends round to the left before the right hander. But definitely agree it is very dangerous to block like that as well.
What is the commentator on? That was terrible weaving by Heiki Kovalainen, and the result proves it

Errr no it's not! It was very poor judgement by Kovalainen to be moving across the track so much whilst breaking but your comment doesn't make sense!
