Ever go to the motorcycle flat track races when they used to have them there? That's another part of Hagerstown's past that's a shame it's gone, I'm from southwestern Pa and Maryland borders the bottom of the county I live in, every year a crew of us would hotel rooms already booked and leave in the morning taking our time getting there, turning an hour and a half journey into five hours by hitting several watering holes on the way down we knew that had good food, get to Hagerstown about one or two in the afternoon and check into our hotel then most of us would head for that restaurant, The Gateway I think it was called, right at the entrance to the track and spend a couple hours eating as many bay crabs as we could and try to drink every beer they had before going to the track in time to watch the start of all the fun. God I miss those days, most of my friends that I'd go down there with are gone now, and they don't have the races there anymore anyway, it used to be so much fun and the thing I looked forward to more than anything else every year. That's what's a bygone of Hagerstown for me.

Some historical perspective. This airplane first flew in 1944, had a top speed of 375 miles per hour, could carry a useful load of 35,000 pounds, had a pressurized cabin, retractable landing gear, a four row 28 cylinder piston engine developing 4000 horsepower each. 41 years after the Wright Brothers flew for the first time. Imagine what we were doing in 1983 and fast forward to today, the B2 was already on the drawing board... This is a pretty amazing machine and was a pretty amazing period.

Well done history with high production quality. I have a family connection to Fairchild. During one part of his Army Air Corps career, my Father flew for what was called SNAFU airlines out of New Castle Army Airbase. They had a small fleet of a Boeing 247, a couple of Lockheed Electras, and a Lockheed Lodestar used to ferry Women's Air Service Pilots on a route from New Castle to Farmingdale (Republic), Lock Haven (Piper) and Hagerstown to pick up airplanes and fly them to training bases and dispersal points for shipments overseas. He later ferried some of AT-21s from North Carolina to training bases He retired after 30 years as a Pan Am pilot. I visited this museum today and was most impressed with the docent on duty in mid afternoon. This place greatly deserves your support.

In the late 50's to mid 60,s I used to fly from the Philippines to London and remember these along with super constellations and later the early jets. Used the bunks on these. Total journey time 36 hours with stops in Rome etc. The airports had rest rooms were you could wash and sleep and the stops varied in length depending on what work to the engines were needed!

When I was a kid the sky was filled with prop driven airliners. They use to allow people to walk out on the tarmac with the passengers to board. We'd stand there while the engines warmed up literally within yards of the plane. When they would begin to taxi and turn, the air from the props would blow the skirts of the ladies up over their heads.😂 The pilots took me several times into the cockpit and I got to sit in the co-pilots seat. They would never do that now. Those plans were a sight to behold.
