Sorry for the shaky video, I was holding my phone over my head over someone else's so it wobbles a bit but you get to hear this great old engine as she rolls on by.

CONNIE BOSWELL - SWEET SUE, JUST YOU (1938)
มุมมอง 1.1K7 ปีที่แล้ว
On the eve of Connie (Connee) Boswell's 110th birthday, here's a tune seldom heard but a real swinger. Recorded in Los Angeles on April 15, 1938, with Victor Young and His Orchestra, originally released on Decca 1889. It's rare in that there were only about 3,000 copies sold and the original doesn't show up often. It's only ever once been reissued, on a CD called "Moonlight and Roses," which ha...

GLENN MILLER - Falling Leaves (Live, 1940)
มุมมอง 2K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Glenn Miller & His Orchestra, recorded live December 17, 1940 at the Cafe Rouge at the Hotel Pennsylvania, New York, NY. This air check was first issued on the "Glenn Miller Limited Edition, Vol 2" RCA Victor LP set in the 1950's and while Miller's studio version of this song is more widely known, I prefer this version. I digitized this track from my vinyl copy and reduced the noise. I don't ow...
The World Stands with Paris

Photo: Louis Pellissier Audio: Dolores Hope (wife of Bob Hope) The song was originally written during WWII but after the terrorist attacks yesterday, Dolores Hope's evocative version seems fitting once again. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones in the horrible events in Paris on 11/14/2015. The world is with you.

Behind The Scenes -- Rescuing The Boswell Sisters Home Recordings
มุมมอง 39410 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short, quickly assembled and edited video I made for the closing festivities of the Boswell Sisters exhibit at The Historic New Orleans Collection in October, 2014. This record came from my collection and had been owned by Connee Boswell herself. It is a rarity from 1944, appearing in no discography anywhere that I have seen. I digitized and remastered over 600 recordings from the Bos...
Operation Sandstone Radiological Safety (1948)
มุมมอง 13110 ปีที่แล้ว
In 1948, the United States conducted its third series of atomic tests. This film documents the efforts to protect participants from overexposure to radiation. Sadly, four men received beta burns, one in shot Yoke and three in shot Zebra. This film seemed to have omitted discussion of those injuries, which included skin grafts for several. Other Operation Sandstone videos can be found here on TH...
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! -- Connee Boswell & Russ Morgan (1945)
มุมมอง 5K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Connee (Connie) Boswell with Russ Morgan and His Orchestra, recorded in New York City, November 27, 1945. The audio was taken directly from Connee's personal copy, a 12" studio acetate safety that we purchased from Morty Savada at the renown "Records Revisted" shop in Manhattan. This disc sounds clearer than any 78 pressing I've ever heard or owned, almost high fidelity. Enjoy!
Donna Hightower - Something Warm, I Can't Stop Loving You, Goodbye
มุมมอง 8K11 ปีที่แล้ว
From her 1974 Discos Columbia album, "I'm In Love With Love," three tracks taken directly from Miss Hightower's reel-to-reel playbacks of these June 27, 1974 sessions. She wrote the lyrics to "Something Warm," then she sings Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You," and ends with Gordon Jenkin's "Goodbye." Her voice was at it soulful best here. The arrangements and Columbia Studio Orchestra were ...
The Norman Luboff Choir- Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie (in stereo!)
มุมมอง 50K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Nothing to see but oh that harmony the richest sound I've ever heard! I discovered this reel-to-reel tape in my collection and was blown away by this recording. Most of the tracks from the "Songs of the West" album that I found uploaded here on TH-cam (and on Amazon) are in scratchy, noisy and only in mono. By comparison, this true stereo recording is a marvelous aural feast. The original LP al...
Donna Hightower- Lover, Come Back To Me (1958)
มุมมอง 7K11 ปีที่แล้ว
The Late Donna Hightower, singing a standout track from her first album for Capitol Records, "Take One." A recording session had been planned for singer Dakota Staton but she cancelled at the last minute. Producer Dave Cavanaugh remembered a demo record he'd heard of Donna and invited her to record the album. Nothing to see here except a beautiful picture of Donna and the glorious recording.
Connee Boswell -- Maybe (1958)
มุมมอง 3.1K11 ปีที่แล้ว
In my opinion, one of Miss Boswell's finest recordings. This was recorded in June, 1958 and released as "Connee Boswell Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook" on the Design record label. Although her voice has changed, huskier and deeper, her phrasing was never better. It's also one of only a few dozen tracks she ever recorded in stereo. Nothing to see except a photo of Miss Boswell in the 1950's an...
DONNA HIGHTOWER (1926-2013) - "It's Over," and "I'm In Love with Love"
มุมมอง 4.2K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Jazz and pop music singer, Donna Hightower, died this week in Austin, Texas. She was a personal friend for over ten years. Here are two of her finest recordings, from her 1974 album, "I'm In Love With Love." The two tracks are "It's Over," and "I'm In Love with Love." Donna wrote the lyrics to both songs. She said she was going through a trying period and poured her heart into her songwriting. ...

I was born in '62 to parents who were great ballroom dancers who naturally loved the Miller sound they'd danced to as kids during the war. My own first experience of live music was with them at our local dancehall in Herefordshire uk, early 70s, and I was immedioately taken by the visual appeal of the string bass and sax lineup etc, SO much better look and sound than the pop music of the time. And a massive effect on my subsequent lifelong love of swing and 50s music. When this doc was broadcast on British TV in the mid to late 80s I recorded it, still have the tape in fact, and my Mum loved it as much as I did. RIP Mum n Dad, still dancing up in Heaven.

I GOT THE LP. Near mint, great cover shot. She did another 1 on Cap, then was fired PAID $6 , july 88, The Record Exchange, Gravois Rd, St. Louis. Her 70s in Europe were a disaster, disco romps etc schlagers, evuhh saw her, 26-13 was here.

Corrections- 2 LPs for Capitol as you said but wasn't fired. She was living in Europe when the second album was released in both US and Europe but when Capitol learned she had no plans for return to US, was released from the contract. Not fired. Also, comment on her 70s in Europe being a disaster is utterly ridiculous given she sold millions of records, and was awarded a gold record for This World Today is a Mess, which she co-wrote. In 1974, she and Julio Iglesias were Discos Columbia's top selling Spanish-based artists. So no, her 70s wasn't a disaster but a period that brought her worldwide fame, though sadly not so much in US.

@@randallriley I M A jazz vocal purist. From that standpoint her career was ruined by goin commercial by the lowest common denominator i.e. disco - that was a disaster even 4 Baccara ntm Santa Esmeralda. In spirit ! Compare with Ernestine Anderson; she nevuhh compromized, but bit the bullet caused by disco. Thx to Carl Jefferson of Conc she made a comeback. Monetary gain is a form or artistic prostitution; it precludes /omits true talent by obfuscating it, not perfecting it. DH could have been among the top tier of genuine jazz ladies w Dakota and Gloria, soon after Sassy. No casting couches noplace, just pure joy of singing out of soul thru the American Songbook. Compare w Lorez Alexandria. 🇫🇮
