BUILDING a large SWIMMING POND and plunge pool in my UK TROPICAL GARDEN🤔🌴 : Part 9
Today we look at further progress on the natural swimming pool we are adding to the tropical style garden in Leicestershire uk . THE POND IS FINALLY FILLED, we have added more edging and hid the liner under the slabs. we have made it to A milestone in building the natural swimming pool and rec pond project in my uk tropical garden. we have finally got the liner in! my idea is to create a natural looking pond that will be used for swimming similar to the swim tykes in Germany. now that we have got the liner in we can really get a feel for what the pool looks like filled! this is the right corner of my jungle style garden in the uk and we want to surround the pond with cold hardy tropical plants. with the ground softening up we are able to start digging again. we have been slowing building a large pond that we can swim in, it is split into 3 sections, 1 waterfall section, one deep plunge pool area and a large hot tub area. this will have a mix of formal pool styles as well as a natural pool look. we started by digging a 12ft intex above ground pool into the ground, we are now expanding it to make it 3 times the size. we soon hope to get pond liner in once we get to the final depth, based in Leicestershire uk. more updates coming soon subscribe and share! #garden #gardening #uktropicalgarden #backyard #pool

Wow looking amazing ! Really impressive and so much potential

I have not been able to find needle palm seeds. It appears that the seed heads have been removed on the plants that I checked. The Sable palm had seed heads, but I was not able to access them because of my limitations. I will continue to look at palms in other areas. The project looks good. I can't wait to see it completed.
@@DavidThompson-i8c ah they are like finding gold 😎🌴 i think many stalks probably get cut pre maturity to boost the plant, but shame so many potential baby palms 🌴😎 thanks 👊 lots more to do but it is cool to finally see it with water in! now for the slightly more artistic side of the project 🤔🤷♂️
Amazing how it changes when the water is added. Having dug a rather large and deep fish pond by hand in heavy clay soil, rather you than me tired, that's hard work
@@essexhognose1808 absolutely, its a bit odd as its a vision ive had of the area for over 2 years now and to finally see the vision taking shape and actually see the water at the height I want it, it feels like quite a mile stone! that bloody clay is a nightmare 😂😂🤦♂️ atleast it has alot more stability over dirt 🤷♂️ madd when i look back at how this all started to where it is now🤔🤷♂️ now i just need around 5 tonnes of rock 😂😂😂🤦♂️

thanks for watching 😎👊 newest video out now if you havent seen it, we finally got the liner and water in 🤩 starting to actually look like a pond now 😂🤷♂️
Still looking great. I also am going to eek my plants out for another couple of weeks and then bring the more tender ones in. thanks for the video
@@GrowTropicalMK thanks! yeah i think we should be able to squeeze a few more weeks in, although middle of November it looks like night time temps may get consistently low, gonna keep an eye on temperature and morning frosts from now and play it by ear i think 🤔🤷♂️ good time for working on the tropical swimming pond project, some new videos out now and a few coming soon!
@@richardfrais_backyard_projects Fantastic looking forward to them
Nice to see someone who enjoys digging as much as me! Should be great if all goes well. Was thinking about doing something similar so super interested to see how it goes.
@@jurassicgardendiary1023 not sure if im enjoying it at this point 😂🤦♂️ i can see the light at the end of the tunnel though 🤔🤷♂️ getting the liner in is my next mile stone, then the long process of adding rocks and detail etc. fingers crossed it turns out how i picture it haha. oh awesome would love to see that take shape in your garden 😎😎👊

@@DavidThompson-i8c keeping an close eye on the weather and trying to keep the ensetes out until literally last minute if we go below 0
Well, you got frost. Here in Atlanta, we've been dodging Huricanes and Tropical Depressions. We can expect frost after Nov. 1st. Sometimes as late as December 1st in the city.
@@DavidThompson-i8c yeah pretty common this time of year for us, maybe a week early this year but always a stark reminder winter is coming 😂🥶🤦♂️ yeah ive been following the storms over there its pretty crazy tbh! weather does seem to be getting more intense over the years . im hoping we should be about the same as you most years we are, and dont get any hard frosts till around then as well.👊
Heaving that pond filled potentially help with winter hardiness. The water acting as a temperature moderator.
@@DavidThompson-i8c agreed this was part of the thought process with this 🤔 i think every Garden needs some sort of water feature 🤔🤷♂️
Needle palm and sabal minor are native to the southeast United States, Florida , I believe. Sabal Palmetto is somewhat cold, hardy, but probably not available in your area. I think you probably would have to aquire seed and start them that way. As you know that there would be an investment of a lot of time. Thought just popped into my mind. I made a 4x4x4 frame out of pallet wood, covered it with plastic, and used a cheap space heater, incadescant light bulb, and computer fan to keep my house plants alive when I was living in a situation where windows and natural light were non existent. I had a thermometer that regustered highs and lows for the day. 32'was the lowest it got inside but no damage.
ah yes, they are lovely palms, although as we get quite mild summers we may not be able to get the growth you can get in the states with them. id be up to try some seeds though 😎🌴 ooh that sounds like a good setup 🤔😎 may have to try to rig something up 👊
Let me see what I can get my hands on. It may take me a week or two to get close enough to both types of palms to see what's going on.
Thats what i want to do, is this a reg fridge?
@@evelineyoung7709 thanks for watching and commenting 😎 yes it is, and tbh it worked well 🤔🤷♂️😎
Nice ! Still looking great. Have you managed to germinate the canna seeds before? So far, I have tried and failed. Great results from bulbs multiplying, though.
thanks im forever planning and changing the garden 😂🤷♂️ ive had limited success with the seeds but i think always worth a try when they are free at the end of the season 🤔 would love to get canna durban though 😎
I'll be watching this winter and spring. Let's see how well your garden over winters. Have you tried needle palm, sabal minor?
@@DavidThompson-i8c thanks for watching and commenting 👊😎 tbh im interested to see how it all gets on as well 😂🤷♂️ i think i will protect some of the smaller palms if we do look like we will get a prolonged cold spell, but opting for as little protection as possible, we are in zone 8a-b so im pretty confident most will get through without needing anything 🤔🤷♂️ no id love to try one but surprisingly they are not common at all in the uk, (not that ive seen) only seen a couple baby plants and only then ive only come across it a couple times, hopefully they become more readily available here 😎
I'm in zone 8 here in Atlanta. I've seen 6 palm varieties survive winters here. Sabal Palmetto and Minor can be seen. I don't know how to tell the difference between S. minor and S. Palmetto. Trachycarpus fortunei, Rapidophylum hystrix, Camaerops humilis, and Cocos capitata. I also have seen a hardy schefflera struggling at the Atlantic Botanical Garden.

@@GrowTropicalMK thanks for watching and commenting 😎👊 its getting there 😅 i think focal points are key 😎
@@GrowTropicalMK i must add you've got great content as well 👊 been subbed since your early garden tour i believe 😎
@richardfrais_backyard_projects haha thanks you came up in the feed. Now that the gardening season is coming to a close, I will have more time to watch videos! When I create a focal point it usually also has a secondary use as a privacy screen. Hopefully I can allude to that more if I manage to get an october tour out.
@@GrowTropicalMK ah wicked, im glad the community is growing, i found your channel the same way 🤷♂️👊🤣 i agree with the weather changing im now thinking of hardscaping projects now the ground is becoming more moist 🤔🤷♂️ yeah i think focal points and creating barriers is a good way to make the garden feel bigger as well! ill certainly have a watch when it comes out 😎🌴

Lovely garden! Thanks for sharing all the info on the plants and their names. I love my taro plants, I have three kinds and want more. I also have two kinds of canna plants, and bananas. I am in south Louisiana, USA.
@@jonisolis9645 thank you for watching and commenting 🌴👊😎 i want to try and spread as much knowledge as i can 🤷♂️🌴 what kinds do you grow ? have you tried the pink colocasia variety yet? aj wicked the start of a collection 😎👊
@@richardfrais_backyard_projects I do not have the pink one yet. I have Colocasia 'Illustris', Colocasia esculenta Black Ripple, a large leaf green variety and a smaller green-leaf variety that has a small dark spot on the top of the leaf. So I have four varieties. I would like the pink one too!
@@jonisolis9645 ah wow quite a nice variety you have 😎🌴 are they all green house bound for the winter? im trying to get a few more cold hardy ones , might expirement with a few of the less hardier ones outside 🤔🤷♂️ really cool plants and the pink china is a plant and forget one 😎 thanks for watching and commenting 🤗
@@richardfrais_backyard_projects I do not put any of these inside or in a greenhouse for the winter months. I just keep them in the ground or pots and mulch around them well. I also have spider plants in the ground and some other plants that are called houseplants. I have many so do not worry if I lose a few during the winter.
@@jonisolis9645 ah wicked thats cool they have done well outside! , quite tempted to try a few house plants outside my self this year, 🤷♂️🌴

No matter what year, however, people have always pushed limits to see how far north or south a variety of plant will grow and then be proud of their "unique" plant. Lol
@@DavidThompson-i8c I agree ! great to see it becoming more popular bringing lots of great experience from all over and adding to the knowledge pool for these types of plants 🤔😎🌴
As a young person reading books about plants, I remember a book mentioning about a palm growing on the southern coast of England and how close to the artic circle it was. But yes, the change in the climate is so noticeable.
@@DavidThompson-i8c its incredible just how hardy some of these plants can be given the right care and environment 🌴
I think an arch/free standing pergola by pizza oven area would look good, not quite side on but on a diagonal so as you come from house can't see through it, bit as you get to oven can see out over garden. Then could put evergreen climber over it.
@@jurassicgardendiary1023 l like that idea as well, i think getting some cover over the kitchen area and some the climbers would really tie it all togetherr 🤔😎 that was part of the idea to see from the kitchen but not from the gate🤔🌴 great ideas thank you 😎
I lived in South Florida for 33 years before moving back to Atlanta. So yes, I've been growing tropical for a very long time. In the late 70s and early 80s, it was difficult to grow tropical in Atlanta. Climate change has made it easier here as well as the UK. I visited England in 1975, and I have no memories of palms in London then. I'm retired and get my tropicals on at The Atlanta Botanical Garden.
@@DavidThompson-i8c wow yeah thats crazy its imbedded in your blood! tbh i think there a few older examples of palms in the uk but not in london directly and most would be in botanical gardens. yeah climate change has really changed the landscape to what we can grow. especially with the tree ferns becoming more common place here. there are some insane botanical gardens here that really push the zone boundaries 🌴😎 tresco abbey gardens in the isles of scilly is one of my favourite visited it everyyear since i was 2 😂🤷♂️🌴 i think it embedded in me lol
Great video Richard... you ever thought about an Arid Bed... which I know in the UK is a challenge, and needs some sort of canopy in the wetter months... but you have so much going on in there, you deffo got your work cut out 👍👍
I'm in agreement with the previous comment about arid plants. Prickly pear cactus, agave. They do well where I live in the Atlanta, Ga area. We get a fair share of rain and they seem to do well. We can grow the palms you can grow so maybe they will survive.
@@DavidThompson-i8c Prickly pear I have seen growing very well in the UK for sure... and Agave for that matter...
@@markchitty6505 thanks 😎👊 i have considered this and could be a great idea for around the bbq area 🤔 kinda half started on an arid bed where the butia is , but i do like the idea 😎 it can be a challenge but i feel like if i build something off the shed maybe for protection 🤔 haha yeah tis the season for building now the ground is getting softer 😎
@@DavidThompson-i8c thank you for watching and commenting 👊😎i think its a great idea, already planning a small arid bed where the butia is currently, but need loads more gravel 😂🤦♂️ fb marketplace here we come! 😂🤷♂️this could also work by the bbq 🤔 ah thats wicked im originally from ct but moved to the uk in 2006, have you been growing thr tropical style long? cool to see people from all over the world in colder climates trying these sorts of plants. its cool growing up in the states then coming here and being able to grow alot more things than i ever could in ct 😎
I have mixed rhododendron suoilenhense (Large leaf variety), Loquat trees and Staghorn Sumach Tree - Rhus typhina with my Palms and then added Persicaria, Fatsia, Heuchera and Liriope muscari plants for a bit of ground cover....most of those are happy in shaded areas so perfect for under planting...another great plant that is hardy and would fill a corner is Euphorbia x pasteuri 'John Phillips....mine grew to 1m high in one season...all the above hardy to -10 or more so no worry about cold winters...I find a windy path to lead you to the bottom of the garden really enhances the experience....
@@Simon-uq4cg thanks for watching 👊😎 some great recommendations there that ive not properly considered 🤔 the pairing you have done i imagine looks quite lush all year round, definitely what im after some of these areas! and of course hardy evergreens are right up my alley haha. agree i think paths that lead you to different destinations and focal points really add to the experience 😎👊🌴
@@richardfrais_backyard_projects Yes....I've only been putting my garden together seriously in the last 12-18months but the options I have gone with fill alot of space, very quickly and gives a very tropical/jungle type setting for almost 12 months of the year...only the Staghorn and Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex drop their leaves over the winter.....Dont forget lighting next to those palms!! ;) ...some lights really give a great focal point! Keep going...your garden is looking great!!
@@Simon-uq4cg ah a newer garden? tbh mines not much older 😂🤷♂️ i have a tetrapanax in the back corner and really growing on me no pun intended 😂🤷♂️ becoming one of my favourite plants, evergreen structure has always been a main driver for me when looking at plants, nice to have all year round interest 😎 absolutely agree got a few plans for loads of lighting in the garden and love the look of the up lights on palms have a couple that have it but need loads more! 😎 thanks much appreciated defo a labour of love 🌴
On a complete off topic question, how are you finding the Washingtonia Robusta? Hardy enough or finicky in the cold?
@@essexhognose1808 with these i do struggle planted about 5 of the triple trunk small pots from b&m last year and only one of the 5 pots has made it through, i find them quite finiky and seem to like a raised bed with good drainage and some protection say from a fence or near a house to get them through. i got a good deal on a larger one this year so hoping the large size will make it a bit more hardy🤔🌴
@@richardfrais_backyard_projects shame as they do look very impressive and colourful when mature

Bananas, quick height and some shade / canopy in time for the pizza oven area?

Evergreen plants are so important, like you said... you get gaps when the big leaf plants die back ...
@@markchitty6505 💯 absolutely i think its easy to get carried away with the big leave tropicals and lose sight of how it will look in winter, i think its ok to mix in various evergreens as well i think around 60% or more of my plants are evergreen, i got fortunate though that alot of the big trees in my garden where here when i moved in😂🤷♂️🌴. ive planted all.but one of the palms though. its crazy the difference from 3 yrs ago when moved in!
Most of my garden is evergreen - so that it looks great in Winter as well as Summer.
