It's disappointing when talk show hosts framed Lynch as just a weird guy to laugh at. He's maybe a little esoteric but he explains his ideas and feelings very clearly and is extremely earnest in all his endeavors. Like, I was really interested in the mouse trap! I wanted to hear David's explanation, not listen to Jay make 10 cracks in a row without actually admitting that it's a pretty impressive contraption all things considered. Yeah it's a talk show and it's just the nature of the format but it would've been a better show if Lynch was presented as the artist he is, not a cartoon character to gawk at

He always mentions the most unnoticeable people by their full name that he’s met, and connected with and, you know he has really created rich relationships with all these people you never hear about and felt their lives touch his… and then he throws out really big names like they’re anybody else and that’s really cool.

That's not a burn, that's a genuine praise. Ebert hated (most of) Lynch's films but still always said he thought Lynch was a great director, and always said he could admire the filmmaking in almost all his films. And for Mulholland Drive, he really went very far in praising the film, giving it a lot of spotlight in many articles he wrote, so in many ways he did "help" the film a lot both during award seasons and during the cinema release. Also, Lynch is not a sarcastic person. If you saw him in interviews and talks he gave, he has never ever been sarcastic in his speaking, and it's well understood that he means what he says, and would never disguise a feeling for something by being passive-aggressive. It's just an entirely wrong read on your part and probably more a projection of your own disdain for Roger than anything else.
