"Gone Away Part I" The first of a two-part season finale which follows the true story of how Pat Reid and Hank Wardle (in our case Pat Grant & Phil Carrington) escaped from Colditz. It starts with an account of the famous 'tea chest' escape of Flt Lt Dominic Bruce (th...

Colditz TV Series S01-E01 - The Undefeated
Classic episode!! This era of Jeffrey Palmer reminds me so much of Chris Morris! 😂
Willie Rushton in a serious role and so credited as William Rushton. I can't get over Anthony Valentine's character. He must have practiced for months to perfect it. Quite possibly one of the most compelling antagonists to be portrayed on TV. And the series themselves are right at the top of the list of most compelling productions.
With that beard Robert Wagner reminds me of Jonathon Frakes (Cmdr. Riker on Star Trek: TNG).
When I was stationed al Lakenheath AB, England, I watched this series on the BBC. I was immediately hooked...
Wayne, Thanks for this engrossing Colditz episode with the theatre as the background for escape attempts. Probably based on the real-life theatre in the camp where the British performed the music & dancing show known as 'Ballet Nonsense'!
When do they build the airplane?
Why was Gilles Romilly ( Winston Churchill's nephew ) never mentioned in this series? He was one of the most prominent members of the " Prominente ".
37:46 Oh no ! Right in front of Major Mohn ! 😮
21:47 Why is there a Corporal in this scene? Colditz Castle was exclusively for officers only.
Have the box set and always gets a yearly outing, great memories of my childhood a great series. Superb cast and acting it’s never been bettered in my book.
22:04 How could that French officer visit the British quarters ? The Colditz prisoners were segregated by nationality. And kept locked in their quarters except for appells, exercise, meals and such. 😮
Wayne, Thanks very much-first-class episode & very fast-moving & well thought-out plot!
I am watching this again after many years and have actually visited Colditz on a choir trip to Germany, including the east! Such a moving and emotional trip back into history and the sacrifices our men gave in the war, on the front line and, so importantly behind the lines in prisoner of war camps. It grieves me beyond words that the west, viz America, is now shoving those heroic men into oblivion by allowing the rise of 'hitlerish' autocracy in our {western democracies} . WHERE are our ideals? Where is our pride in defeating Hitler? Only to find America has voted in a Hitler look alike! WAKE UP AMERICA and realise what you have just voted in!!!!!! I despair!
Wow takes me back....loved it then and now. Tho different now after learning they shot Cunningham in the back as he was clmbing back down the fence, dont think they show it in the series.
All these 70's shows have a realism about them.. hard to explain.. maybe a simplicity. No endless over the top camera angles and cgi. I love em.. really satisfying to watch.
OOH the baddie is concerned about an attack on some bodies eyes - no body else was? lefties?
I know I know, but really, American tankers wearing RTR berets? Churchill tanks a Shermans? But Ed Bishop? All is forgiven.
All we get now is celebs in a jungle cookery or diy
30:01 Aha ! I caught a blooper ! Those are the two sleeve stripes of a Corporal ! But Colditz Castle was a prison exclusively for officers !😮
A rather confusing episode for me. As others have commented, it's probably the poorest one. A way to get Wagner back in the programme?
❤
This is powerful writing - you aren't capable of this now you woke scum.
Geoffrey Palmer - a great actor.
Did you notice even as a prisoner the upper class kept his "batman" - his slave - f**K you British upper class.
I recently read that Jack Hedley (Col Preston), had been a Royal Marines Commando, which really impressed me.
31:13 - This is a bit odd coming from George, as in series one we learnt he suffered from chronic insomnia.
Wayne, Thanks for this opening episode of series 2 with the adding of fine actor Anthony Valentine as a German Major who needles many of the British prisoners especially the character played by David McCallum!
Very different characterization of the Americans here, than on dads army.....nice to see at least someone on the writing staff was grateful
The difference being, Dad's Army was a comedy, a sitcom, not taking things serious and poking fun at everyone. Colditz was a drama, based on real life events.
What is the name of the song is being played when Major Mohl walks into Colditz?
Well, that was a wonderful series. So many top class performances, it's hard to pick a favourite. Wagner's understated delivery, Valentine's barely suppressed mania, Meyer oozing class from every pore, and Hedley's incredible Col Preston. "The first condition will be - the defence and administration of this castle pass under our control effective as of this moment."
Dr Legg shot himself in the foot there.
I miss Pat and Phil.
Monitor 2:08
The gay undertones of the last 20 minutes or so of this episode is so clear to see. I remember once a critic reviewed that Dick Player was the repressed gay man in the show.
The kindness from the Kommandant was seen at 49:25 when he handed this back to Colonel Preston. The Kommandant knew exactly what Collins had been doing, and that he won a large sum of money from Captain Brent from playing cards. Other Kommandants wouldn't have done this. This is why Colonel Preston was a bit surprised at this moment.
It has already cost the life of one good man. By giving Preston the documents, it would have saved other lives.
@@richardtaylor1652 Other Kommandants would not have done this. Others weren't as kind as this Kommandant was.
@@johnking5174 Absolutely right. Many other Kommandants would not have even been bothered in the slightest.
@@richardtaylor1652 Even though the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe both had their own disgraces during the war, both were very different compared to the SS and Gestapo. One former POW once wrote that the level of humanity in the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe was very different compared to the treatment to POWs given by the SS and Gestapo, as Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe soldiers were loyal to the state rather than to the Fuhrer and the sick Nazi ideology.
Superbly acted episode!
Stunt man from doctor who Stewart Fell did that jumping over the fence and escape; just noticed this time watching.
The Commandant was the weakly SGT in Force 10 with Harrison ford and Robert shaw
Ray Barrett. Legend. Wish new tv had the same depth and class.
"Pilot Office Page" was sent to Colditz?? Was he already known to the Germans? Anyway, stolen his identity, he got lucky and can hide out till the war is over. Brilliant last emotion speech. One of the best episodes of the series.
Carter being a Lt and Escape officer can give orders to Cpts above him without saying please of any of those courtesies. Sort of second in command under the Lt Col in a way besides the MO.
49:00 the moment when Mohn asked himself whether 'we are the bad guys'.
Superb!
Player's table manners are a disgrace to the senior service.
I thought i recognised the voice of the yank major in the jeep. Ed Bishop of UFO fame
Many of the Germans are more likable than the Brits!
The leniency of the Germans was amazing.
This was the Wehrmacht and not the SS/Gestapo who would not have been lenient. Wehrmacht were on the whole very different to the SS/Gestapo, however they did have some in their ranks who were just as cruel as the SS.
I confess to a very bad thought. I have not seen this series and do not know the year being imagined in this episode. I assume that the man plays with a marked deck. When I heard that he must go to Dresden for medical treatment, I considered that, that time being very soon, a fire in that old city might be as four aces in the hand of fate.
A harpsicord partita by Bach?
