Holiday Window Display Train Maintenance N Scale
This video covers detailed setup, operation, and maintenance of the train layout shown previously. Purpose is mainly for instruction of store staff. Anyone attempting a similar tiny N scale layout may also benefit.
I created several animated holiday window displays for my favorite local bakery. Purpose was to entertain neighborhood children and to get parents to visit the shop. Easter, July 4th, Halloween, and Christmas exhibits have been done for 2 years so far.
Two 1/150 N Scale trains run on a compact layout in a 18”x26” baking sheet pan. The local main street is realistically modeled with buildings, vehicles, and people. Realistic landscape covers the outside of the pan and it can be changed seasonally.
Design, construction, operation, and audience experience were challenging and time-consuming. I finally evolved the exhibit to be practical for bakery staff to setup and run without too much of my involvement. With this video, I am happy to show my results and lessons learned, especially to anyone considering trying something similar.
I appreciate comments, but I often don’t read them for weeks. I sometimes reply to specific important questions. If I definitely covered your question in the video and you didn’t notice or didn’t watch that far, I probably won’t reply. If similar questions appear often though, I might even cover them in a follow up video.

    I have some questions about this layout - if you used insulated track connectors would that solve the short circuits and then you could use 2 controllers - where would they go and where do we put the power points - in the loops?

    As a Marylander I’m foaming at the mouth to have modern MARC representation in N scale, mind boggling how Kato has ALC-42 and MP36PH models and no MARC variants; I know this video is mostly covering other NEC roads, but a giant local road gap from DC to Pennsylvania is uniquely frustrating.

    I know you don't post videos very often, but on the topic of these Kato Trams, have you acquired one of the new Kato "My Trams" (typically come in the red or blue). What intrigues me with those is that they are in three pieces, which almost gives me the impression that you can possibly use multiples to extend a single tram, to make them resembles more like the real streetcars in use in north america.

    cant help but laugh looking at the prices for such a setup ... you people are hilarious burning so much cash on such cheap molded plastic moved by the most basic electrics. Dont even want to know what it would cost to make this programmable, so that the vehicles can be properly controlled and use stops etc.

    You sir, are an absolute genius. This layout is fantastic. I am on the same “track” as you but maybe a few years behind. I have most of the same equipment, and could not agree more with the analysis of function, especially the new Rapido comets. Good to know about the radius and uncoupling. Keep it up, this is a true gem of a layout in its rarity!!!! Appreciate this video!!!

      My freestanding wire rack quadruple shelves are 18” wide, but most of my single wire shelves are 24” wide. This is because a protruding concrete foundation sill keeps my freestanding rack shelves 8” away from the wall studs. Once I saw off all the rack shelf poles above track level, all my sceniced modules will be 24” wide, giving me deeper background scenery with a 33’ total length. BTW, most of my shelves are 48” long, but some are 6-12” shorter or longer to accommodate appliances.

      Yes, Japan is left hand traffic LHT. My layout is an unfortunate compromise of USA RHT and Japan LHT street pieces. When making these videos in 2018, I intended to review USA rolling stock first, so set up USA 1950-1960 autos as RHT. Most of my LHT road arrows are cleverly hidden under autos. Then I changed my mind and decided to do modern Japan rolling stock first, but forgot to change the autos. I never completed my USA rolling stock videos.

    I know this prototype goes way back but I'd love to see Kato release some Pennsy MP-54 bookcase sets someday. They'd go nicely with their GG1s and with some N scale E44s and BLI's P5s, you'd be able to have a really solid roster of Pennsy-era NEC rolling stock.

    • @theonetruescale
      @theonetruescale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn’t agree more! Please submit two Kato USA product suggestions for MP54 and E44. I am working on my 1968-1982 video, then 1952-1967. I will be strongly advocating for NEC fans to demand those models. Until then, I will be using Kato or Tomix brown Japanese series 72 EMUs as a stand-in.
