19:07 - 25:23 | Composing ghost notes with a linear approach against the kick
Hey everybody,
Or here, in this video I'll try and breakdown some thoughts I've collected over the years on how technical elements in rhythm composition translate into emotional context. How to manipulate subdivisions and spacing to promote different sensations in the arrangement.
This is still a very basic introduction to many of these concepts so bear with me, if you enjoy this sort of content let me know and I'll make sure to make more of it!

The sounds from this drum plugin are blowing my mind. IMO in a mix it'd be practically impossible to tell that it's from a VST. I'll have to save up for this one and add to my plugin arsenal. A+
Nice!! Those drums sound so badass!
Yeah! And Mike being such an amazing finger drummer helps :)
Such awesome software. This is the only arp a producer would ever really need. Excellent work, Modalics.
Thank you so much! <3
Or is not only a beast on bass but also a wonderful dude.
Love it m8
how many toms does it have? cause looking at the kit piece list in the daw, there seem to be 5, while on the gui you only have 3.
Our kit has 2 toms and a floor.
it sounds absolutely great, and the options are great. too expensive, for a single kit, in my opinion, though, even now, for black friday.
Thanks for the kind words! We also include a freely updated bank of MIDI grooves from top drummers and producers (Over 300 files now) and our kit sampling depth is unmatched. We went all in on this kit instead of providing several with lower resolution.
Cool video Or! ❤
Thank you brother!
thank you so much for this! love the tools and deep dives!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching.
This is really good. I'd love it if you could put something together to demonstrate how to use Beat Scholar for complex DnB/jungle tracks. Also interested to find out what developments you have in store for Beat Scholar. Wondering if you had anything to help with mixing and possibly adding effects to individual hits. Something like the drum rack on Ableton.
Thank you! I don't do much DnB or jungle programming myself, Beat Scholar currently doesn't have a WAV editor, start/end points or auto quantize so working with short loops isn't as intuitive as we'd like, it's best to use individual hits and then splice them together into intricate rhythms with varying subdivisions. As far as adding effects to individual hits - that's a really good feature idea that we'd love to implement, currently the best way to do that would be to use Multi-Out mode and process/automate each instrument track. We can't currently say what's in store for Beat Scholar, but we would love to enable different time signatures per lane, perhaps also come up some way to automate effects on individual hits as I mentioned before... we have plenty of ideas! If you have any feature requests feel free to post them here :)
fwiw, one thing I've done in the past is using dblue glitch (v1 is free, v2 is paid). you could toss it after beat scholar in the DAW to create some cool rolls and reverses and stuff to get some added effects to a driving beat at like 160-170 bpm (plenty of ghosties too!)
@@Modalics also IIRC, didn't someone on the discord create an 'amen brother' kind of beat scholar preset? it was really cool and gave some opportunities for slicing up a break while making it completely unique.
@@DeskLazer Indeed! I think the preset is still pinned on our #beat-scholar channel. @kieranmchugh172 you're welcome to join our server and grab the preset from there.
Drummer Anika Nilles is the master of quintuples 😍@anykmusic
I actually left a part out where I said modern drummers really like quintuplets and it's made it's way into the scene lately :) Anika is definitely one of the modern greats.
"Understanding why you're doing things is key to being a well adjusted productive member of society." 🙂Great video! It really helped me understand the app Beat Scholar and beats in general better. And some general wisdom thrown in as a bonus 😄
Haha.. I was waiting for someone to catch on to that silly joke ;) Thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback and I think I'll make more of these videos soon!
@@Modalics Looking forward to more videos! (but first I have to try out all your tips and philosophies)
Thanks. Very useful.
Thanks for watching!
@@Modalics btw... I own Beat Scholar on desktop and my account is registered using google. I downloaded the iPad version but could not log on to start trial. Tapping the google icon does nothing.

Agreed, are comments turned off? Won't let me make one, only can reply to ppl
Great video. I don't think there's any other drum software out there that approaches rhythm in the way that Beat Scholar does i.e. it makes 3, 5, 6 and 7 subdivisions effortlessly easy to audition by embellishing parts of what would be an otherwise rather static and stiff cyclic 4/4 groove.
Thank you! Yeah, just listening to a variety of subdivisions on the same groove opens up colors that were not really available before. My goal in this video was to also demonstrate how subdivisions can be used to flavor grooves..
This was so helpful, both for my overall drum programming and for leveling up with Beat Scholar! Terrific- ty and keep it coming, pretty please! 😊
Thanks for the feedback! I'll try and make more of these.
Lol you spelled "Lube" for the preset
Well, its crashing a lot sadly. out of nothing. The standalone is crashing when changing to ASIO for example. Default GUI size not saved correctly. Its small again, everytime on start. Its like a beta v0.7 to me. Sadly only scans VST3 not VST2 folders which contains good older MIDI Effects like CodeFN42 Chordz which cant be used. All in all a good idea, i wouldnt use it for my daily studio work yet because it can crash the whole DAW and project...
Hi - Please send your report and system specs to info@modalics.com and we'll try and help you out with the crashes. VST2 will not be supported unfortunately.
Good stuff man! I dont even come close to enough of an attention span for programming. But I know a little about it. There are still some good ideas the music world needs.
Just Got the Modalics Black Friday Bundle. Should be great addition to my Cubase. Thanks for tutorial 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
Thank you for your purchase! If you need anything you can write to us @ info@modalics.com
I just bought EON Arp and I have to say I'm a little disappointed, is it really an arpeggiator? Could we play like on all arpeggiators a simple chord on our keyboard and hear this chord arpeggiated after selecting a way to arpeggiate? I haven't found how to do it. May be i'm wrong.
Of course it can do that, that's exactly what it does. :) Make sure to select EXT mode and not file mode for the input.
Shift + drag to create midi regions doesn't work for me. Please fix. Logic 10.2.4 thanks
It does work for us here in Logic as it does on the tutorial. Make sure the pattern name doesn't have symbols like "\" or "/" or dots in it.
This is so great tool, but currently, it never support VST2 unfortunately. Please support it ASAP!!
Yep. Turned it into non comprehendible nonsense.
Cool app but it would be much more useful to me if everything could be offset. This is a workaround and still doesnt allow for great control over offkilter patterns.
Marry me
I am not sure how or if I can change the time sig properly to anything I want. I managed to go down from 4 to 1 on the first number (so for example from 4/4 to 1/4) by just clicking on that number. But I cant go greater than 4 (for example 5/4). How do I do that if possible? If it isnt possible you should make it possible because exploring rythms also means exploring odd times to me. Edit: odd times where the count is greater than 4 i should say.
Yes, it's definitely possible. Just drag it up. It goes up to 32 (so 32/4, 32/8, etc). You can check out presets like "Gravitational" that are in 10/4 for example.
@@Modalics ah sorry. I didnt try dragging yet. I was just clicking. Was wondering why it somtimes did something and sometimes didnt 🤣🤣
Is it possible to load vst2 plugins within plugin buddy VST3 plugin? Or is this technical not doable?
It's currently not possible to load VST2 in Plugin Buddy.
Hey all, I'm having a tough time routing things in pro tools. I have superior drummer 3.0 and just got Beat Scholar, and I'm trying to get the hands and feet type layout set up, and I can't seem to figure it out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hi! Did you send us an email about this by any chance? I want to make sure we asnwered your question and I recall an email coming in with the same kind of issue.
Hey there, you did email me back, apparently it can’t be done in Pro Tools?
Cool! Definatly +1 for the option to load 32bit in new 64bit mac systems. It should be possible since wine etc. can do it. Would be EPIC!
any chance it will be available in vst format? (my old daw can't handle vst3)
Unfortunately no, we currently have no plans to release Plugin Buddy in VST format.
@@Modalics not good news... anyway thanks for the reply
@@k0csisgab0r Sorry about that.. it's just that VST can be a bit problematic to support in the future. If it were only up to us we'd add support for it in a heartbeat.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for your fantastic work!!! 🤗🎶

Hi, Can I somehow set a filter on the midi notes from the midi keyboard? The thing is, something generates a note C minus 2 for me, and this enables a certain function in the plugin that should not turn on by itself. I need to somehow block this octave - 2 before it reaches the instrument vst. My daw doesn't have the ability to lock a midi octave. What do you advise? Greetings :)
We don't have any solution right away but we might be able to add a MIDI filter in an update.
@@Modalics I will be very very happy!! Thank you! ❤️🤗

Love U Guys for this plugin!!!!!! ❤😊
nice!
Thanks. I met with a website technical glitch that prevented me from signing up, and "Try agan later". I will try again later. It looks awesome.
Pretty useful tool! One thing that would take this to a whole new level is if we can modulate parameters within Plugin Buddy. For example, assign an LFO or random modulation to things like the Transposer, FX mix, etc.
🤘 ♥ ✌
is this possible omg 🎉🎉
It is! :D
Plugin Buddy, big thumbs up for that one! Thanks for giving that to the community! I have a question regarding Beat Scholar though -> Are user samples saved to the patch and can be migrated? Or do i have to place them into a special folder so the plugin can reference them? I didnt really find an answer to that... :)
Hey there - Samples in Beat Scholar are saved with the preset file, so you can easily migrate patches just by sending someone the file and it will contain all of your custom samples.
@@RuleofThump They all fit into the (in this case 1.3mb) json file? In the User Kits directory? Well that is wonderful!
@@abrakadeep8810 Most one-shot samples are small enough so that even a fully customized kit preset wouldn't be large, it all depends on the samples you use. But basically yes, the single preset file contains all the preset info + the samples.
@@RuleofThump That is wonderful! Thanks for clarifying that! Knowing this just hugely simplyfied my whole process by a LOT :) Or atleast how i think about it, this will lead to many presets. Its super convenient to be able to just drag and drop cut samples from the arrangement view / session in ableton, into beat scholar. That makes everything super stream lined! :)
@@abrakadeep8810 Feel free to share your presets on our discord channel if you want :) I'm "OrLub" there. Happy to hear you're enjoying Beat Scholar
As a Pro Tools user (unfortunately), I'm thrilled! The current tools available for hosting in our shitty DAW are limited and just as unintuitive as the DAW itself. So, this is a much needed and welcome addition to the everyday workaround struggles for those of us stuck in the past with Avid. So thanks for the freebie!🎉
Great!!! Oversampling, multiband, sidechain and mid-side please 🙏
❤
This is cool. Any chance we could get the velocity mapping midi effect as a stand alone midi plug in for pro tools? That would be super useful, especially working with Drum midi converted from real drums or ekits.
Yes, this should currently work. Plugin Buddy is itself a MIDI-outputting plugin. So if you: 1. Load Plugin Buddy with Velocity Curve into a new track with no instrument loaded in it. 2. Create a 2nd track in PT 3. Make the input of the 2nd track be the track with Plugin Buddy in it.
@@Modalics ah yes it does, that's brilliant thank you!
yes, I would be glad to pay a bit of $$ for a 'pro' version that allows multiple 'instruments', splits, layers, etc. with multiple MIDI FX, multiple instruments, and multiple FX, it would be fantastic for live playing. make it easy to switch from one program to another, even on the fly, and you would mostly REPLACE Mainstage.
Thank you! It's possible we would do something like that in the future. For this one we wanted to focus on something free that mainly supports chains that include MIDI FX, as we didn't like the idea that you have to pay to properly use MIDI FX in some DAWs. There are quite a few paid options already that exist, so we didn't want to compete in that space for now.
Thank you! Looks like a very useful Vst3 host plus many filters and functionalities.
Great!!! Can I get Midi out notes from the MIDI FX devices to DAW?
