great place, those stairs really got me tired on the way back up, and loved Angel Falls even though it was very difficult to get down and up the steep hill to it, the ropes there helped but there should be more.

70 years ago, I was 8 when my dad took me hiking up the gorge to the reservoir and down the North Rim. I was born after Dad came home from fighting WW2 in N Africa and Italy. I was raised in Moravia and the Army tried to draft me to die with my friends for nothing in Vietnam, but I beat them by 2 hours joining the Navy instead. Search YT for Parsons Falls where we teen boys camped at the top of the falls every Summer.

So my friends grandma lived next to one of these little streams, we walked all the way up and what we saw was a 50ft cliff with a waterfall and pool at the end. Literally was so beautiful I’d go back to that exact spot just to see it again.

This has been one of my go to parks since I was a kid. I still go here as much as possible even though I moved to waneta lake 2 years ago. The "strictly forbidden" to enter the stream, many people just ignore the warning signs and trespass into the stream anyway. Sad really. I enjoy the steep trails, good workout for a 64 year old guy. I can still do it.

I was young teen back in the 70's. There was always some construction or rehab being done. Nice to see that a wine cellar was finally opened. I took a girl friend on a date there. Being broke and wanting to at least do something. She was not impressed with history or the fact that I chose a place that she has to do more walking than she wanted to. I always found visiting Sonnenburg Gardens to being a great place for a pleasant afternoon. Even if I could not exactly afford anything on the menu at the time.

There are signs up along the trails telling visitors that wading/swimming in the gorge is prohibited. It is sad. I had so much fun swimming under the falls when I was younger but I get that it can be a safety issue.

    • @danielledegeorge2129

@@fingerlakesexplorers it's very sad. All I see is govt policing us and turning God's nature into museum exhibits that we're no longer allowed to touch, FOR OUR SAFETY. How many hundreds of thousands of years has mankind swam in God's natural rivers and pools without some huge regulatory body coming along and prohibiting it? I think it's wrong. Now Stony Brook might as well be some boring museum for me 😔
