Board Games On the Table... - April 8, 2024
Defenders of the Wild looks so fun and I love the art, but I can't help imagining it with a Fern Gully reskin! I want to fight Hexxus!!
Oh that would be an interesting theme! Thanks for watching!
We've never done an Exit game so I haven't considered getting that Advent calendar...do you think it's more entry level than the Exit games? Or should we try an Exit game first?
The Advent Calendars are entry level (even says so on the box!). So while puzzling experience certainly helps, it's not required. It also has a good hint system fwiw.
Defenders of the Wild looks pretty cool. It's funny, the reason I didn't really pay much attention to it was because I assumed it was like Root and probably not for me. But knowing it has some Pandemic-ness to it makes me more interested. I'm so tempted to get a playmat for Final Girl just to help with organization. The few times I have played it, I feel a little disorganized and I wonder if the playmat would help make it smoother.
Yeah, Defenders is nothing like Root which didn't hit home for us either. I could tell Root was an excellent game - just not our cup of tea. I do think the playmat helps fwiw. I really like using ours.
@spielmill1755 yeah same. I'm sure Root is great, just not for me and the way I most often play games. Defenders though would be more my flavor.
North Pole Nightmare is indeed a nightmare! So I agree with you two, it seems to be harder than the others. I have such a fun time with luck based games sometimes. I know that's not everyone's cup of tea though.
It's good to know that it is hard for you too! Yeah, luck-based games can be challenging for some to embrace. Dice are fickle beasts after all!
Final Girl isn't my jam but Jacob is totally into it. While he's trying his luck against baddies, I'm doing some Euro style soloing. I haven't tried any of the games you mentioned. You guys always give me games to add to my wishlist!
Yeah not every game is for everyone. Defenders of the Wild or Flock Together might fit more with your gaming style preferences. If you dislike the luck heaviness of Final Girl you probably won't love Hunted either though.
Great video! We have the trilogy inbound (we were able to get hold of it with the Black Sonata crowdfunding) and Orchard is the one Joana plays a lot on BGA. I haven’t played it yet myself so your video really helped me to understand what it’s all about ☺️ thanks and happy holidays 🎉☺️
I'm glad the video was a help! Hopefully you get the games soon. Happy Holidays!!
Loved this! Looking forward to Grove now!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
No matter how many times I play I always get a kick out of the punny score chart 😅
haha I do appreciate it. That's why I had to read from it!
@spielmill1755 you ARE remarkapple 😉
I love this game, but I SUUUUUCK!!
It really is fun! And it's so puzzly which means it can be challenging for sure.
What a nifty little puzzle game! I'd heard of it (and this game series) but seeing it played really helped me visualize how great it plays! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful to demonstrate the gameplay! It's really a fun little game. Plus it plays so quick, so you can really power through a bunch of games in a short time.
'Tis the season... You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
We've had My City on the shelf for a long time & still haven't played it. I sometimes forget we have it🤦♀️ I don't think we've had many pattern building games until the recent purchase of both Sagrada & Azul. I think Savanna Park might be considered pattern-building---it's a tricky puzzle! Great lists, as always! Lots of interesting games to consider!
I know yinz struggle to get campaign games to the table, but My City is super easy to table so hopefully it happens for you at some point! I don't know much about Savanna Park but anything with pattern building intrigues me!
@@spielmill1755 I think ya'll would enjoy Savannah Park. Easy to learn, but tricky to optimize piece placement since your opponents will be determining some of the pieces to be moved, according to what they need shifted! Simultaneous action means it'll take about the same amount of time with 4 players as 2. We really enjoy the puzzle-y-ness of the tile moving, trying to get groups of animals together with each other ---and with watering holes. I think next year will be when we finally tackle My City. Maybe I'll make it a New Year's Resolution!😁
OK you've convinced me! Putting Savannah Park on my wishlist. Maybe it'll happen this christmas...
@spielmill1755 Hmmm....I thought Savannah Park was one of your unplayed games🤔 Must be thinking of something else🤷♀️ My recommendation stands, though!😁
Turns out I already had it on my wishlist. Probably from the last time we talked about it haha. But yeah we don't own it.
I have only been in the hobby for like two years, but I watch a lot of youtube board game content. I just want to compliment this series on mechanisms. Regarding games that I have seen on other channels, you two are good at focusing on the elements that you find most appealing without overly rehashing the way the game plays generally. Moreover, you have introduced me to titles that I have not seen featured much on other channels. Thank you.
We're so pleased that you find our videos helpful. Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
I really like a lot of the games you all mentioned. Earth, Calico, and Cascadia are all big hits in our house. Would Cartographers count as a pattern building game? We recently played that with the family so it's top of mind. I actually picked up My City as a gift for my husband this holiday season so it's reassuring to see it on both of your lists.
Yes Cartographers is definitely pattern building I think. Now I'm disappointed I didn't include it haha. And My City though is a great gift! I'm sure your husband will love it!
@spielmill1755 fingers crossed!!!
Love the list and I have now realized I have no holiday themed games at all. Perhaps something to rectify. And don't worry about ditching my ideas. That really cracked me up! I'll try to think of some January themes. The first thing that came to me was storage. I just think of January as you have to take down all the holiday decorations and store them somewhere and you have to find a place for gifts you've received over the holiday season. Not sure how that translates to games, but just where my brain went. I hope you two have a fantastic holiday season!
Oh that's a good idea! There are games where you can store resources and change your storage capacity (in fact I think Santa's Workshop fits that). Thanks for watching! Have a lovely holiday season!!
There's a Christmas version of Patchwork that comes with a polyomino cookie cutter. We like that! We also shuffle Santa into Walking in Burano because that has a Santa card. There's an Elf game (movie themed) that I'd like to get as well as Santa's Workshop! I'm also definitely going to look for that Christmas movie game you mentioned! That sounds like a lot of fun!🎉 Great video!
Oh those are some Christmas games and tie ins we are not as familiar with! Do you own multiple versions of Patchwork btw? Fyi the Christmas Movie Game is from Fink and Fink games. Check their website. Thanks for watching!
@spielmill1755 We do have multiple versions of Patchwork! Besides Christmas, we also have Halloween, & Valentines. We consider the Valentines edition to be our regular edition: it looks like a chocolate box --- and chocolate isn't seasonal😉😋
Ok I thought so! That's great. Now I want chocolate... haha
Great video ☺️ We’re not big on the Christmas theme ourself, but that Lucia and Exit Calendar caught our attention and hit our wishlist for next year ☺️ We only had one game in your list which was Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries 😅 we liked it well enough but will be replacing with Northern Lights because we needed components for the higher player counts. Wishing you both happy holidays ☺️
Yeah the theme isn't for everyone, but we did think of y'all when we were discussing Lucia. It makes sense that would catch your interest. Also, we'd love to get the Northern Lights version. Unfortunately not available here in the states. We'd love to hear what you think of it when you get it. Happy Holidays to you both as well!
@@spielmill1755ah yeah it’s a shame it’s not available there yet. We actually have it already just haven’t opened it up yet; we managed to find it from a Finnish seller with the Nordic languages ☺️ it’ll allow us to play the Asia map expansion we picked up which will be nice, because we made the mistake of getting that for the Nordic Counties version which, as you mentioned is a smaller player count 😢 Hope it comes to your side of the world soon ☺️🚂
FYI, I just noticed that there is a print and play of Lucia on BGG.
Growing up, my family always baked more around the holidays, so I have made an exception for Gingerbread House as a holiday themed game. Your certainly right there aren't as many Christmas themed ones, the only one I had on your list was Holly Jolly which is quite fun. I noticed Alhmbra Mega Box in your background, was wondering if you would consider making a video ranking and discussing the expansions offered. I'm trying to decide between that and the Red Palace version. Best Wishes to you both this holiday season!
Yes, we both remember doing tons of baking growing up. We really like the Alhambra video idea so yeah, we could totally do that. We won't be able to do it until January so hopefully that still works for you. We haven't played through all of the expansions yet but we've been wanting to so we just need time to finish that! Best wishes to you as well. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
Septima sounds a lot more appealing than I'd initially thought. Thanks for diving into it so well!
I was obviously thinking about what you had said before about the theme of Septima when we filmed. It could have felt super dark but it didn't which was nice. Thanks for watching!
We played Septima too recently and I didn't think it was too dark. I agree that there are a lot of ways to avoid raising suspicion or lowering it so that element of peril never seemed too high. We really enjoyed it and that decision of, do I match the other player or the Septima or do I try to wait? That was fun. We also love Cascadia Rolling Rivers! We haven't tried Hills yet, but Rivers is great and unlocked this love of roll and writes for me and now I'm super into them. It's so simple to set-up and get going and it never feels the exact same. It is a great game. Hope you two are doing well and thank you for another great video! Always a delight to see what you're getting to the table.
Thanks for watching Jymmi! I think Rolling Rivers and Hills are almost exactly the same. The differences seem to be one central die is different and the sheets are different (but similar). I suppose the habitat cards vary too. But the combo leads to lots of variability so that's good! Good to get confirmation on the feel of Septima too! - Jayne
Terrific lists! I guessed some of them! You could do an entire video on "feasting" because there are so many food themed games these days!😋
Thank you! Are you hungry now? haha. Sometimes talking about food just makes me hungry even if it is board games. I think No Pun Included did a whole video on why you shouldn't eat board game components lol.
@@spielmill1755 I do love food themed games! 😋 Most components don't look very edible to me, but the Valentines Patchwork looks like a box of chocolates!😋 Yum!
Wow, you were zooming today! Great suggestions! I really wanna try Creature Comforts! One of these days. And thank you for the shout out. That was very sweet and really lifted my spirits today. I think I really needed that. December is a tough one. Obviously, you could do games centering around the various holidays in December. Although, I'm thinking maybe something around gift giving, whether that is part of a gaming mechanism like an I split, you choose type. Or shopping, like in a deck builder where buying and gathering new cards is super important. You could also do Advent as a theme. Games, such as legacy/campaign games or The Adventures of Robin Hood where you are revealing things, opening up little compartments. The game is somewhat changing and you're getting excited and unlocking stuff. I think I even saw you post about Exit advent games on Discord which could totally be a part of that. I hope you both are well. Thank you for the videos and the joy you put out in the world. 🙂
We're so glad that lifted your spirits! You ideas are so clever. You really are quite creative with the theme ideas. The December ideas are great and we're sure to use them! Robin Hood is a great example of an advent game. We really enjoyed that game. We need to play it more. And yeah, we're playing through last year's Exit Advent Calendar now. Good memory. All the best to you and yours! Thanks as always for watching and the kind words!
Love the way you explain why you love these games. I'm VERY interested in Dice Forge.
Thanks for watching! Dice Forge is fun and definitely worth a try at least...
Great list as always. Have you played "Captured Moments: A Downton Abbey Game"? I have a copy that I got as swag, but I've not seen the show nor played the game. I do love Maggie Smith though as Sister Act is one of my favorite movies of all time. We really like Legendary as a deck builder. We have Buffy, Firefly, and Marvel so we enjoy those a lot. We also really enjoy Fort, which has some deck building along with resource management. I've never played Quacks so I do feel called out. I will do my best to fix this in the future. 🙂
I've never heard of the Captured Moments game. I wonder how it is. If you play it do let us know what you think! And RIP Maggie Smith! What a loss! We've heard good things about Legendary (maybe from you haha)? And we have SPQF - which is Fort before it was re-skinned. No one can play every game obviously but Quacks is good if you do get the chance to play. Especially if you are ok with some luck.
Great lists!🎉 We don't have a lot of pool building games. I think my fave deck-builder is Moonrakers, especially with the Overload expansion which adds advanced action cards. My fave bag builder is probably Life of the Amazonia. Some of the games on your lists I didn't realize were pool building games! You mentioned a couple of dice games...do you consider Dice Miner a pool-builder?
Some day we'll have to try Moonrakers. I forgot Life of the Amazonia is a bag builder. That's on our shelf of shameful opportunity! And as for Dice Miner, I think you can consider that Pool Building since your dice work like a pool of sorts. Good thought!
It’s so funny to watch you two talk about the games you love :D . Thanks so much for what you both do! Aeons end is my fav game atm ! Can’t wait for the new crowdfunding campaign to be delivered! I wonder if one of my favorites , space base with loads of expansions would count ! That or challengers have been recent favs
Thank you for watching! We love Aeons End and Space Base! I don't know that it counts as Pool Building though. We also have played Challengers online and enjoyed it. I'd like to play in person with friends. I think it'd be a hit!
I was a bit stumped for games with pumpkins---until I remembered that the Halloween edition of Patchwork has pumpkins for the 1x1 "patches" & also pumpkin player pieces for the time board🎃
Oh I didn't think of that one! Good catch!
Really cool lists! From those three lists we have only Tindaya and Three Sisters. We already have Spirit Island and Delicious in our wishlist, but Burn the Fort, and Whirling Witchcraft sound like games we would enjoy! Oh and one we have that fits the Spooky theme, Castle Party (Which kind of fits the Pumpkin theme? it has a Pumpkin King lol) 🎃 but yet to play it - probably a good one to get around to during this time of the year! Thanks for another cool video :)
Thank you for watching! We're glad you enjoyed it. If you want to get Burn the Fort you may need to act quickly. With it being self-published and the designer passing, I don't know how availability will be. We really should get Castle Party. Seems like people like it!
Great list! My spooky season gaming goal is getting Septima to the table. I would also love to play more Three Sisters. I've only played solo so I would like to play with others. My November suggestions would be either Cozy games. Games that get you into that cozy mode. Games that feel like a warm blanket and a mug of a warm beverage. My out of the box idea is games involving fire in some way (not literally). You start building fires in November or even having bonfires. Also, the back half of the word November is ember so it seems fitting. Hope you are both having a lovely month!
OMG, you are right. We have to get Septima to the table too! And Great November suggestions. You are so good at thinking outside of the box! We hope you are having a lovely month as well!
@@spielmill1755 Thank you! I appreciate the compliment. Also, happy to report we did play Septima over the weekend and it was a lot of fun!
Have you ladies tried Wendake? Also, 3 Sisters could've been on your Indigenous People Day list because the Iroquois invented that technique.
We have not played Wendake. I will have to look that one up. And yeah, we actually originally had 3 Sisters on that list but switched it. We didn't want to put the same game on both lists either. Thanks for watching!
We have not tried Wendake. We'll have to look it up! (this is Jen and we actually discussed where to put Three Sisters for just that reason!)
Jen, your shirt and earrings are awesome 👍 😁 🎃
Thank you! I love my themed dresses. This one is in a sort of 1950s cocktail dress style. I adore it!
Again, your videos always show us new games to look for! Thank you :) We really like this mechanism. We haven’t played many games, but amongst the ones that we own and have played more recently, we love Wingspan, Azul, Fungi, Jaipur, Knarr and Botanik. We have some more on our collection waiting to be played for the first time though (a few are on your list!). Soon! Ahahah
I've been playing Knarr on BGA and really enjoy it. Pondering whether I want the physical copy or not!
Constructive criticism: Cut down on the put downs if you want to grow and maintain an audience. examples: 5:15, 8:39 Not amusing. Never was, nor will be. I wanted to stick around and hear more, but can't stand that sort of passive aggressive commentary.
Thanks for the feedback. We do appreciate that and will watch for that. Thanks for watching!!
Forest Shuffle is kind of becoming a staple in our household. It's becoming the game we take on a trip or one we often will show to people. It's just so fun and there is a press your luck element with the clearing and I love that the cards are currency. No extra bits. It's all done with just cards. As for another mechanic, is tableau building or engine building a mechanic?
Yeah Forest Shuffle is lovely. So glad it's found a key place in your gameplay routine! And yeah those are mechanics I think. I like those suggestions! - Jayne
Oh how Jen gushes over Bunny Kingdom! 😍🥰 Oh yeah, forgot to mention Pulsar 2849, Coimbra, Grand Austria Hotel, and Diced Veggies (draft/chop?). I ❤ 🎲
Oh, good list though we've only played Grand Austria Hotel we've heard good things about the others. Really especially tempted by Pulsar 2849!
Glad you mentioned Dice Miner 👍 Fun filler! Cheers, ladies 🍻 😉
Dice Miner is so fun! Thanks for watching!!
Wow! What great lists! Quite a few overlaps with fave drafting games of ours🎉 Very happy to see that Canopy made the list. Such a fun push-your-luck element to the drafting!
Canopy is very cool and Canopy: Evergreen arrived in the mail today! We couldn't resist Canopy but with greater table presence!
@@spielmill1755 I backed Canopy Evergreen, too! My copy is on the way---looking forward to playing it!
LOVE to see Boomerang on this list!! It's so underrated and so so so good!
I (Jen) LOVE boomerang so much. I just find it so satisfying. I think card drafting feels like shopping haha. All the dopamine!
Fantastic video you two 🎉 Fugitive has been on our list for a while, and now we're itching to get it even more! Have you tried their other games? We have RUN which is a really cool two-player hidden movement game 😊 Also A Wayfarers Tale looks amazing, we love that kind of game , print and play, roll and write, and adventure 😮 I'm going to try and find it right away 🙂
From Fowers Games we have Burgle Bros, Now Boarding and Paperback that we've played. Now Boarding is really great. Try it on BGA. It's so fun. We like Burgle Bros a ton too. Wayfarer's Tale is definitely worth it. Oh they have a streamlined free download of it here: www.wayfarergames.co. It's not as robust as the one you buy but maybe enough to try it out.
I love A Feast for Odin. I have the Norwegians expansion but I've always been scared to add it on. I mean, I can't even get around to utilizing the island boards in the base game! I'm so focused on filling my player board for income that I don't dare explore! But after your explanation, I think maybe it gives me more options to do things. Maybe I'll be able to accomplish more? Your thoughts?
The good things about Norwegians is that it's changes don't affect how to play much, so you should feel ok adding it on. And I do like the options it adds with the 5th action column. It does make things a little tighter elsewhere by removing some action spaces at 2 players for example. I think that I find I accomplish more by getting the islands early so I can surround their bonuses and get more object income. And worry less about maxing out coin income on the main board. But it is a trade off for sure. I do get the main board filled eventually that way as well. Not sure if that helps! - Jayne
Have you played La Havre: The Inland Port? I've played it once & my memory of it is that it was significantly easier than what you described for La Havre 🤔 Not sure which I'd prefer🤷♀️
I didn't realize that existed. What is interesting is that it looks really different. I think we're happy enough with Le Havre for now. To be honest we don't always prefer the two player versions of games. But it's interesting how different it seems at first glance.
@spielmill1755 I've got it as a digital game on Steam, but it's been years since I played it, so my memory might not be great, but I think it's very different. I've considered getting La Havre, but I think I'll do a rulebook comparison between the 2 versions before then!
We have Haiclue and I think we have only played the challenge mode. Might explain why it felt a touch long. Perhaps if I didn't have to compose a haiku every time, it would have been a bit swifter. Still a fun game though.
Oh yeah, definitely quicker to play rounds the normal way. But the haiku way is really fun though!
Really nice themes! For October you could go for the biggest convention in the world, which is just around the corner: SPIEL in Essen! Not really sure how to thematically wrap it up, but maybe something like racing to get all the games that you're hot for or something like that. 😊
Oh, I like the idea of riffing off of Essen Spiel somehow. Thanks for the suggestion!
Love the themes for this month! Although when you mentioned the original reason for labor day, my brain went to childbirth. I don't know much history. For October themes, besides Spooky season is a challenge. I feel like a lot of hoopla is made of pumpkin spice lattes so you could do a coffee theme. My out of the box idea is Oct-ober. I'm thinking games involing octpus, squids, cthulhu, or the number 8.
Ha, yeah labor does have many meanings itself. I like the October theme ideas, You always have creative ideas!
@@spielmill1755 Thank you!
Dice Miner has beer on the dice. When you "share beer" you're supposed to say CHEERS! 😆 Come to think of it, this'd be fun to play tipsy 😜
Oh yes, Dice Miner would have been an excellent pick. We love Dice Miner and the cheers mechanic is fun! Good idea!
Our absolute favorite season is just around the corner. We LOVE Fall 🍁 Those were some great games! Cavern Tavern has beer in it and it gives me a autumn feel. IDK, maybe bc it looks cozy and warm inside the tavern. Like the customers are coming in to get warm and have a drink. Kinda like Taverns of Tiefenthal.
Fall is delightful! I've never heard of Cavern Tavern but I'm looking at pics on BGG and it does look like it has great atmosphere. Thanks for mentioning it...
Gonna say it again, we just love that opening theme😅 It reminds us of how sitcoms from the 80's opened every episode. Especially when Jayne breaks out Distilled and Jen smiles and nods 😆 We had so many "it would be funny if they also..." ideas. 😁
OMG, I'm super curious about your ideas. At some point we'll want to re-do that. We're glad you like it!
@@spielmill1755 Jayne goes to put the lid on a game she just packed up and realizes she put the components in the lid. Jen shakes her head and sighs. Both laugh and look into the camera. So eighties 😆😂
hahaha I love that! We'll have to do that...
@@spielmill1755Jen could walk in the door with bags of new board games. Then Jayne standing there with her eyebrows raised and arms akimbo as if to say "I thought we agreed no more games" And then Jen could flash a cute innocent smile and shrug. Follow it with the ol' sitcom theme cliche - look into the camera and smile! LOL
hahaha that's also great! Totally taking notes.
I love the themes for August! And one of the games would fit all 3 categories: Spots🐶 New York Zoo would be good for both Awwwgust & Family Fun. The cutest game we played this month is a *fall* game: Creature Comforts!😁 And the game we played with family--and had a lot of fun--is also not an "August" sort of game: Skull Canyon Ski Fest! I guess the heat was getting to us too much!🤣 Good video, good lists!🎉
New York Zoo is a good suggestion. And oh yes, Creature Comforts is a fantastic Fall Game. Looking forward to playing it again hopefully soon. I'm intrigued by Skull Canyon Ski Fest. I think the theme is unique and that pulls me in! Even if it's not the season... haha.
@spielmill1755 Skull Canyon Ski Fest is light, but fun! In the heat of August, we really needed a "snow day"😆❄️
@@teaNgames Ahhh, The Snow Days of August!!! :)
I realized that even though I am a dog dad, I have no dog themed games. The only thing I can think of is there is a dog card in Lost Ruins of Arnak. So I'll be very excited to try lots of new games if someone hosts that theme!
Several of them are on Board Game Arena if you want to play them there. It's nice to have games that thematically tie into our lives!
