Breast Surgery: Pre-Surgery Functional Exercise
How will you get out of bed or off a chair when you cannot use your arms?
* THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE*
This is something that I didn't think about before I had a breast reduction and I struggled to get out of bed and out of chairs post-surgery. So, to prepare for a prophylactic double mastectomy, I practiced getting in and out of bed and my chair without using my arms. This made a world of difference post-surgery. In fact, the first time I got out of bed at the surgery center, I didn't need assistance sitting up in bed.
To prepare for surgery, I was doing 10 sit-to-stands from the bed and from the chair a day for the week leading up to surgery. If you are having breast surgery where you are not allowed to bear weight through your arms and chest, I highly recommend these exercises.

Thanks for the information. I am an SLP with efficiency condos available in Ocean City, NJ. Looking for contractor rentals in the off-season.
I understand what you telling me 💯👍😊🙌😁 percentage
Good luck!! 😊 Hope the procedure went smoothly
This is helpful!! Do you know anything about travel slp and being overseas?
Would you review my rental and let me know if you think I should lower my rental fee?
What happens when you reject the proposition of "building a caseload" and just tell them no?
Since SNFs are mostly hourly pay you get told to go home early unpaid or float to another building. If you don't the SNFs seem to find a way to terminate you. It's sad.
@@thetravelingtraveler I wish I had seen your video before my first attempt at SNF CFY, which I ended up quitting, or else I would have been fired. The expectation that I was a billing factory was not clear until I actually experienced it. I was naive going in, thinking my CF supervisor cared about my development!! They knew I was trying to treat patients with more up-to-date approaches, and they hated it. I was told "keep it simple." I tried, and then didn't realize I wasnt supposed to ask questions. The problem with our profession is other SLP's, too.
Not having a standard of practice is a good thing if you are an intelligent person. "Standards of care" are full of arbitrary axioms that don't apply to the individual. "Evidence based practices" also don't (and can not) tell you what you should do in practice. i.e. aversion treatment for children with autism, which, has plenty of evidence supporting a reduction of unwanted behaviors through the use of things like spray bottles and electrical shock given the instantiation of unwanted behaviors.
I’m thinking about travel SLPA any tips please
all of the resources I have on here and my website that apply to SLP/PT/OT also apply to SLPA. Check out all of the links in the video description for tips/info.
I am just venturing into the travel nurse market. This video was EXTREMELY helpful for me to know what to expect and how to proceed - THANK YOU!
Sure!
Much appreciated
How much do travel SLPs make?
Including our tax free stipends for housing and benefits anywhere from $1600 to $3000 weekly after taxes
So furnishing my unit top to bottom and provide free utilities and WiFi and not get a return over LT rent prices. What’s the point then?
The mains benefits in my opinion are the flexibility of having the unit open part of the year, if needed. Lots of people I rent from have their family or themselves spend time in the units. Also avoiding the damage to the unit that comes with long term renters or getting a bad tenant that you can’t get rid of.
@@thetravelingtraveler I get it! That’s what inspired me to Go to the midterm space, but if I’m going to lose money, that incentive will be irrelevant. I was sold on the idea that people will pay for the amenities . BTW comparing hotels to a fully a furnished home is apples to oranges. If I can’t cover my costs I would be stupid to stay in the MTR space and go back to ST or heaven forbid LT. Btw what guarantees are there that a Mid term renter won’t trash my place or pay the rent.
@@gmjent5671 it sounds like it makes senses to do the short term rental. Or do mid term but market to a niche with more money than travelers. The problem with mid term rentals who make more money is that they tend to be put up in extended stay hotels. I bring up the extended stay hotels because a lot of landlords don’t see them as competition but they are your biggest competition for travelers. The amenities are very similar (if not better-gym access, free morning coffee, weekly housekeeping) and lots of managers will negotiate and give good monthly rates. Plus we get points to use for future vacations. You don’t have a guarantee we won’t trash your place but at least you know (with many a few random exceptions) you can get rid of us in a few months if we suck.
I am a teacher in early education, I am really thinking in registering at a SLP program because I love the work you do. I know it is very expensive the master program. I am 42 years old already, would you change careers and become SLP? I would have to as for a loan to pay for my master. I already paid the master in education!
I don't know listen to your intuition
Jesus loves you all very much❤❤
Are there W2 positions for travel tx?
It’s all w2 when you work through an agency as a subcontractor
First!
I work for a high school as a contract SLP for my CFY and I HATE it…and I agree..I wish these school would discuss the cons of being a SLP..this would save people a lot of time and MONEY because we all know grad school is very EXPENSIVE.
We LOVE animals BUT if someone brings an animal, what are our options as landlords about "pet Poop or Pee" inside or outside the studio we have.
I don’t understand how a nice hotel can be cheaper that an air bnb for healthcare professionals- just $200 a night for a clean safe hotel for a per month stay can range from $5200-$6000 per month where as- the cost as a guest in a private home can be anywhere from $2000-$3000 per month which includes all utilities appliances dishwasher garbage disposal microwave washer and dryer- fully furnished pets accepted yard or patio, 2 car garage 🚘 privacy that a hotel can’t compare, I also thought the hospital pays a stipend of the cost of a home to stay in?
Extended stay hotels will negotiate monthly rates below 2k. I’ve seen them as low as $800/month. I even work with extended stay brands to deals to travelers so there’s a lot of room with hotels to negotiate and get good rates. These hotels come with all utilities, WiFi, dog friendly, gyms, laundry services, weekly housekeeping, etc. As far as the stipend -I have videos on how travelers get paid, some of us qualify for tax free money to use for housing and living expenses. If you qualify if means you are maintaining a tax home and doubling your expenses on the road -which a lot of us can’t afford to do anymore since rates dropped
@@thetravelingtraveler Okay I understand better thank you 😊
“Not looking for an instagram type place” make sure you have professional pictures haha
The “instagram type place” is referring to the modern minimalist design aesthetic. You can do a variety of interior design styles in your place not just follow the modern trends and still be able to rent to travelers. That’s different from having good photography.
Thank you for posting this video, as a new SLPA I found it very helpful! I would love to learn more about how taxes work with travel SLP in a video.
What's BLS?
basic life support (CPR certification)
Don't forget the catty behavior of SLPs in hospitals and rehab centers. It's like high school. I think it's pathetic and wish directors would start cracking down on that stuff. It's toxic. They abuse their student interns.
I second that comment about it being like high school.
Hi there! I'm a slp student interested in travel slp so I'm really happy I found this channel! My program is one of those PhD/MA but I will be getting years of experience before going back to academia and research. Can you talk a little bit about being a travel medical SLP? What do different placements offer? For instance, can you decide if you want to focus on diagnostics, swallowing, adult neuro, etc. Also finding dog friendly housing sounds like that would be my biggest struggle! Would love to hear more about that haha!
Awesome! Check out my “travel therapy 101 channel”.
Hello. My name is Nek0, and I live in Turks and Caicos. Would you be able to contact me? I would like to talk about SLP for my son.
I’m a recent graduate and this was informative about traveling SLP cfy. I am still in the process of thinking about potentially traveling
Everyone wants something for nothing. Why pay someone to live in my home?
This is your sign not to be a landlord. It doesn’t sound like a good fit for you
Is the pay guaranteed? One of my biggest gripes with slp is we’re paid hourly and when our caseload is low so is our paycheck. I’m afraid to take a travel assignment and find out the facility only has like 10-20 hours of billable time and then I’m making what I could’ve made at my regular job. Thanks!
It depends on the contract. You want to look for jobs with a GWW (guaranteed work week) to ensure your hours don't get cut.
This is a good "wake up" video. I'm scaling down, according to this.
Sounds good! Hope your listing reaches your target demographic
What does it take for you to directly contract with a medical facility without the Agency?
I’ll try to make a short on this and post soon
@@thetravelingtraveler that would be sweet! I’ve been seeing EI kids from the county in Los Angeles and the salary has been equivalent. Thanks again,. Later!!!
oo okay thanks for clarifying. I really don't have a lot to add to that one. You'll need your own business. SLPContractsQueen on IG does a lot of contracting courses and workshops
Good for you. 3k a week is awesome.
Thanks!
I think rather than slp I’ll just move to Spain and work in a coffee shop 😢

could you provide some more info on being a professional copywriter? I have great writing skills and would love to be able to do this for additional income. Love your videos!
I talk about it a little on this podcast, I'll have to make some YT on it next podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/from-speech-language-pathologist-to-online-entrepreneur/id1614702874?i=1000642058814
Cheap places that you jiust want for a place to crash is all I needed to know. Not my kind of clientele. Thanks for the info.
Right. I am offended that guests don't think you should make any type of profit. You should pay your mortgage and taxes, buy new furniture, buy plates and utensils, pay for wifi, pay for all utilities, pay for your business license and then rent out the whole furnished place with amenities for 99 cents a night???? 😂🤔 Oh and let's not forget the risk of exposure to the latest variant among other risk of housing sleepy people smoking in your home with unkempt pets. How is this fair or right? I wish people could be more reasonable.
Don't rent to travelers then. The original commenter on this thread got it. If it's not your clientele then work on marketing to a different niche.
You’re welcome happy you’re doing market research, maybe landlords don’t and then are disappointed by the outcomes
Super helpful! Based on your sharing I'm thinking I could possibly rent out both my extra bedrooms to travelers. That could help with the intermittent vacancy issue and also take the pressure off me to make the mistake of charging too much if I only have one room. Bonus for me is I'm a mile from the major hospital in my Oregon town!
Sounds good!
Maam please say there any vacancies speech language pathology? And am a speech language pathologist.
Thank you so much for all this information! Very helpful!
I have a lot of questions of becoming a travel speech language pathologist! I am really interested in learning about the job. Do you have an email or something I can reach out about?
well, keep up the work
The fact that my dog would still have to be on a leash lol
There were on leash dogs but you can’t guarantee that off leash dogs won’t run up to them
I'm absolutely not trying to be a dick, I just wanna know before I say something rude if she has a glass eye.
No it’s a prosthetic eyelid
Congratulations on your important life changes
Our field (and me) really needs your perspective and advice. I’m really enjoying your videos
Your videos should be required for new grads. Just, perfection.
Your voice is very sweet
Where are you from
Great to know when to go back to clinical jobs. I have been back-and-forth with several jobs per diem not travel, never committed to one place in recent years. Kept wanting ped & adult experience I just started my third time (!) filling in temp with one site. I feel much different about it this time. If they give me what I want it might be the place I end up staying & maybe even full time …I was ready .
Yes I love that about our field. We can hop back and forth and always have job security
under the RUG system, my managers changed my billing a lot! It's fraud, systemic fraud!
