On the Other Side of Mullan Pass

On this day I was lucky to quickly catch a coal train leaving town for Mullan Pass. I show a little bit of the operations to add helpers, and also removing helpers.

Since the BNSF takeover of MRL, work crews have been changing the radio message on defect detectors across the ex-MRL system. This one at Milepost 94.3, among a few others, have had the radio message changed to a BNSF message. A really neat change!
Southern Pacific in Montana?!

Another neat sight on one of the only Union Pacific trains in the state. It reminds me of seeing UP 1943 on the same train almost exactly one year ago. #6379 Come to think of it, I don't know if the SP engine was running. I couldn't hear the engine running or see any smoke exhaust from it.

Nice catch on that 8186, I put that power on it in Laurel
Nice job Eli!
Buena cacería 👍🏼✨
Many of my Hot Wheels had defects.
To bad this fellows were too young to see the golden age of steam. You'd had something great to watch than. I am and I did.
Good catch. It's not an everyday thing to hear a defect detector saying something other than "no defect". Axle 32? If 4 locomotives at front, it's the 4th axle of the 2nd car?
There were three engines on the front and so that would make the defect on the third car. Thanks for the comment!
Hot wheel?
Stuck handbrake kept grinding on the wheel and caused it to heat up too much.

Excellent consist 💯👍🏼🔝
Thanks for the video showing the process of coupling and uncoupling diesel locomotives. I've been wanting to see it for a long time! Why are they so dirty? Don't wash them at all? MRL never had such dirty locomotives before.
No washing since BNSF took over….😢
MRL used to take care of their locomotives and clean them, but since BNSF took over they've put cleaning the locomotives aside.
They're workers... Not show cars... They work for a living... Not made to look pretty...Right?👉🏻💰👀
I replaced ties in that curve just West the detector back in August.
Sounds like a partially tied hand brake. Luckily it’s only a few cars behind the head end power
There used to be tunnel fans on the east portal, but they were removed.

Awesome catch!! I'm a huge fan of the fact that they are reactivating these units!!
Great video, were they all running ? TY 😎
Thanks for the support, only the first two and the last engines were running.
@@Eli_J_G very cool, thank you👍
Excellent Content Dude 😎
Your videos are always top notch!
The 33.0 detector is the same. The 15.9 detector above Austin is still MRL.
When I was driving by I saw the crews working on the 33.0 detector
Nien
109 was still there on Monday. That is the steel gang bus. They will be traveling to Austin this evening.
That’s too cool!! I wish I knew where it was now.
Hey, FYI, tie gang starts work in Austin Monday and a Steel gang should be in the area by Friday.
Eli this an awesome video!
We get it bro, YOU SMOKE!
Super nice Train Video! BIG LIKE!
Use electric train instead of polluting this beautifull nature
How do you think most electricity is produced? It just doesn't happen by magic.
That buffer car is quite old
Why is it that as soon as those helper units that were smoking harder than steam trains back in the day left the tunnel, they immediately stopped and had a clean burn?
There was a lack of oxygen in the tunnel, so they were able to cleanly burn the moment they got oxygen.
That’s mundane compared to how it was before they shortened the tunnel length. You couldn’t even see the train anymore after the lead engines emerged and went by. And the mid helpers only added to the “fog.”
Those BNSF SD70MACs may not be MRL power, but they are still darn cool! Awesome stuff, Eli.
That's is fantastic 😅😅😅😅
Fantastic ✨👌🏽
Nice catch! When was this shot? Two days ago I caught a 3x1 WB coal load with 3903, 9245, and an ES44C4 on the head end; same DPU as in your video. So almost the same consist minus the trailing head-end units. -Cam
Hi there, This video was shot on March 8.
Nice to see a scl and a old paint job csx in one package.
Nice vid. 618 was actually back in laurel on a super train grouping East.
Atleast they are still surviving.
Wut?????????? You're talking about a seaboard Coastline coming through but its a train, so... wtf?
The old text on the side says Seaboard Coast Line.

That ace be like... "hey! Don't start moving yet i need to start my engine"
Why would BNSF sideline an AC unit?
Not sure, I think it was only in storage for maybe a month or two at most.
The train conductor is making good money And having fun at the same time
Good sence of humor.
Love this sound. Puts me to sleep at night.
