In another universe, Carrie and Tommy really become the prom King and Queen, Chris and Billy are caught and expelled for their attempted cruel prank. Miss Margaret gets reported to child protective services for her extreme abuse and Carrie gets adopted by Mrs Collins. She deserved so much better.

Did Carrie even realize what she did? She went into that weird trance when the blood spilled on her and didn't seem to snap out of it until she got in the tub. Maybe all she remembers is them laughing at her. I always took it as she blacks out in anger and her power go haywire.

Some think Carrie just imagined all the promgoers and teachers laughing at her. The novel makes it somehow ambiguous but when you put the pieces together you understand that some of them where laughing at her, others where laughing just because they were confused and shocked (laughing was some sort of instinctive reaction) while others were surprised and grossed by the blood (it smelt like rotten stuff). Carrie in the novel has telepathic powers too and can feel that some of those who weren't laughing were just trying not to do that in front of her, like Miss Desjardin (who, in the novel, is a less sympathetic character, decides to give the bullies a proper punishment but finds Carrie rather annoying too, is silently satisfied of slapping her under the shower and tries to hide her laughter after the blood prank - the movie made her more mature and motherly and even the slap is more like an impulsive yet quesitonable way of calming her down). In this adaptation you can tell Carrie is just imagining some of the promgoers laughing histerically at her, as you can tell by the contrast between their actual reaction to the prank (they are shocked and confused, and Miss Collins is visibly heartbroken) and Carrie's kaleidoscopic point of view with all the voices echoing in her head. It's higly unlikely that the teachers, the principal and those who were actively nice to her during the prom were actually laughing (and the movie proves it's just Carrie imagining this). That said, when the movie switches back to the actual crowd (leaving Carrie's pov) you can still see most of the students laughing while Norma and Billy's friends try to leave the gym and right before Carrie shuts the doors.
