Beautiful machine! The only model of first gen D4s we don't have. Great video!
Dad was quite a collector. I have a few more 'nothing special' D4s I might put up on the channel; couple 7Us and the 7J. The 5T however is very special, as the holes in the roller frames (for lifting aboard the ship) indicate military status. I remember we had to go out of state to get the correct OD green paint, as California has very strict lead content rules. This was 25 years ago and I'm hoping my governor is not reading this, or the statute of limitations has passed. I'm enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work and thanks for watching.
I thoroughly enjoyed the history and story of the D4's former owner, I too have childhood memories of local WW2 vets, but I was far too young to realize the importance at the time. It wasn't until years after they'd passed that I learned our small-town banker was at Pearl Harbor during the attack, and one of our neighbors had been wounded on Omaha Beach on D-Day. I only ever knew them as good-natured older gentlemen that we'd regularly chat with and occasionally visit their homes, but they never mentioned anything about their service to anyone - they just did what they had to and were happy to return home and build a good life. Thanks for the walkaround of the D4, and the parts book shows that as being the correct governor, used from 5T1 to 5T3655.
I should have included the bit about the roller frame holes. The tell that this is truly a military machine. Holes for lifting gear to bring them aboard the ship. I learn so much from the comments section and thanks to Armin’s grandkid for pointing this out! Thanks @jbcowherder6210. For me, these stories are to be remembered by any means. Movies can glorify war, those involved want it forgotten. There must be a space between to observe with reverence and respect. I figured Veterans Day was a safe time to share my memory of Armin, and his tractor.
thanks for posting up my grandfathers old tractor- it was the first crawler tractor i ever drove. i remember Ed telling me the difference in the Military D4's is the two big holes front and rear in the track frames that were used for lifting points to load them on the ships. i need to get over there and see it. thanks for the stories.... the war was a very important time for him, towards his final years, he would often reminisce about the war and the experiences he faced. he was in the Army Engineers stationed in the Philippines on Leyte and Mindanao operating a bulldozer or carryall such as that one, building airfields and such. he could remember and would recount those stories over and over like they were yesterday. i think it was Nagasaki that he was going to go see, but when he saw all the folks coming down the mountain being transported on carts, bodies all burned, he decided it might not be such a good idea to go see it. to all those that served, thank you for your service.
@@jbcowherder6210 I was hoping to relate the story correctly. I only heard Armin talk about it once and it was very memorable to me; a young teenager at the time. Thank you for expanding on your grandfather’s experiences. I’m sure he had some good memories as well. All my best to your family. I didn’t know about the lifting points on the frame. Very interesting. And stop by anytime you’re in the area.

Just got my first cat a RD7, now I'm looking for parts, should be a fun project supposedly ran 25 yrs ago and I remember it running when I was a kid
Mine is equipped as an early D7 while retaining the RD dash and single speed pony. Lots of little upgrade differences from the earlier RD line. Gear shift tower, injection pump, etc. Guessing you have a 9G, but the line started with about 500 5E series in 1935. Regardless, best of luck with yours and thanks for checking in.

The D7s do sound nice on those four big cylinders. I might get the 3T running next (weather permitting, too hot) as it is out of doors and really deserves to be stored inside. I'm following your D4 project. You guys do great work.

Just what I needed to see. Working on mag timing. I need to get my 1H D8 running after 3 or 4 years. It was running then but I have not seen any spark yet. I am going to clean the points again and try. I have another mag but I have hesitated to get involved with timing.
If your magneto is off the machine, I would recommend giving it a simple bench test: rig up an old spark plug and give it a few quick turns; complete the circuit on a welding bench or the magneto case itself. The impulse coupling should engage and you'll know if you've got good spark. Love the 1H and 8R series. Best of luck to you.

I concur. However, in the battle to get the big diesel going, and making this video, I had to command the stop manually a few times.

I'm always amazed at the size difference between the RD-6 and RD-7, that one extra piston combined with the much better balance of a 4-cylinder layout really makes a difference. I also love these 9G machines (I'm assuming that's what this one is) for that "Y" shaped dash and their rather "unstyled" styling, if that contradictory statement makes any sense lol 😂👍
tractor number 9G5615WSP. I'm getting it running to transfer it to it's new owner. Dad had an extensive collection and I just can't keep them all. Keeping the 17A so I'm all set for D7 work. Hope to have the diesel running tomorrow and perhaps put it on a trailer this week (June 2024). Yes, that old dash is a classic.

I had always thought that 3-cylinder motors were naturally balanced but 4-cylinders are naturally unbalanced? as the newer d7 has a big counterrotating shaft for balance? JD seems to do their small 4 cylinders with 2 counter-rotating shafts. or is this just a more a sine of technology advancement.

Glad to see you revive/save one from the recyclers. I think you need another J. I have one I would sell, but you might not want it, because it runs and steers! Hope you can come out to Tulare April 19-21 and see all of the D4s and #40 scrapers in action. Even better if you could arrange to have your dads(yours) there too! We even have Glen Gs coming out to play! Seat tanks seem to have less leg room; side tanks great for implements. Everyone has their preference. Great videos. Thanks for sharing! “Gee”

Hey, just wanted to make contact with you. My father had a 1917 international truck, which I restored back in the 80s. He just passed away and I inherited it. I had it running about 5 years ago, but now I’m going to try and do a better restoration. Thanks for mentioning the wheel right, that will be my first item. Interestingly I have pneumatic tires on the back.
Nice to hear there’s another owner out there. These trucks are quite rare. I connected with a group on Facebook during the final stages of my restoration. I was needing final dimensions from original trucks to fabricate missing parts. International Harvester pre-1940 group. A few owners there continue to be extremely helpful. Referencing the Fred W. Crismon book, pneumatic tires were a $50 option above the $1500 base price, depending on model F or H. 36x5 pneumatics. I would expect all four wheels to have been either solid or pneumatic, but all I can go by are the old photos in the Crismon book. There are still few wheelwrights in the USA if that’s where you’re located. I highly recommend Hansen’s. Condolences on your father’s passing. B-1B? I was a mechanic on the final assembly line. Best of luck on your restoration.

I hate to see things go sometimes, but if you didn’t have any use for it, that’s perfectly understandable. That truck belongs to one of our tenant farmers. I hope they took good care of things. Thank you for sharing.

I’ll bet you’re right. At one time, sugar beets were a big deal in the Sacramento Valley.
That looks like a big bear. I live near Greenstone & Green Valley and hadn't really thought about bears much until earlier today. I was having a donkey delivered and the guy who sold it to me was a regular bear hunter. He said there were more bears here than deer! I find that hard to believe. Please accept my condolences about the passing of your father. My grandpa and him have similar backgrounds. Both retired from United (747-100s), both held records between Hawaii and CA at some point, both flew their own planes later. I'm sure they knew eachother.
