    I took on a kitten Maine Coon (6 months old) & she came with a host of toys. Feather wands, replica mice, spinney ball things all sorts I went a bit old fashioned & her favourite toys (currently) are not those, but are a felt tip pen (lid on), few crisp packets rolled up & tied in a knot (she doesn't chew them) & for right or wrong, a couple of plastic syringes which all have unpredictable movements when she swipes at them. May give that tower a try though. Nice one.

      @@Pepperprojectz I have an idea I think the Pepper Projectz would I hope may interest you in deep diving into. Cat food and so-called pet shop medications even shampoo can be dangerous but we think its safe because it's at the pet store...boy we have been so PET FOOLED by pet manufacturing. However, I am a retired paralegal and used to work for the Purina Corporation, and let's put it this way, our cats are victims of the food. But were you aware that vets only know as much about nutrition and the food manufacturers "feed them". And did you also know its pet food manufacturers who subsidize veterinary schools... it's a huge investigation that others have tried but the general public isn't listening to those deep dives. Some of my cats in Sanctuary are victims of nutrition, some have died because of eating foods supposed to help another issue, is my wee Nippers needed limited ingredients put him on Salmon and rice or chicken and rice within a year he splayed his back legs gave out and he was diagnosed with diabetes, the year previous other than skin issues his blood work was PERFECT. I am sure others felt this way when they used a product that they thought was safe...what I mean is I am sure other owners feel like they killed their own pets using food. If it doesn't come from a vet I implore everyone to not use it like parasite treatments. Another its not a medication and vets don't prescribe it is CBD for pets DONT USE IT! It is not approved by vets it's not been made by pharmaceutical companies and cannabinoids are usually toxic to animals. So there are a couple of topics that you may like to look into because these topics are very close to my own heart since as you know I run a small sanctuary, I have had several experiences that lead me to believe that our cats are getting sick while we all THINK what we are feeding them is helping... it's making our cats sicker. Thanks for your ongoing dedication this channel is going to a force to be reconned with in the future as your approach is so in touch with the cat's owners. I appreciate it when people take the time like you are to research and look at statistics, I know some don't see the value in the charts that you're working on like I do.

    Thank you for the tips! I'm really new to owning a cat, really only had her for a little over a month and noticed she has a *huge* hunt drive. She's an indoor cat due to her allergies and the fact that I live close to a busy road so keeping her entertained is mostly down to either using the fishing rod or me throwing toys for her to chase. Especially the springs, the tubes and propeller will be great additions for her toy box.

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Congratulations on being a new cat owner! Awe she sounds really cute and totally agree with ooo re the road, we made a similar decision. On the toy front I’d recommend grabbing a few puzzle feeders and looking to add things like tunnels and a couple of cat trees (if you haven’t already). We released a video called ‘why cats get bored of toys’ and in there we broke down the different types of toys etc. If you need another wand type of toy, the cat dancer could also be a good option as she’ll love hunting that! Congrats again Robin, let us know how you get on with the toys! 😻

    Well gee, that thing is a simple DIY a piece of wire and some cardboard, who needs to ship and buy, and I can see the cats perspective. Kind of resembles a small mammal and the wire makes the movement look more fluid so I'm thinking that not only is the simplicity of the toy one of the reasons its popular its so damn cheap you can make them almost free yourself, and you will actually have a different toy every different wire, seems to me its the movement so if the movement deviates and it would, why its probably one of the toys cats don't get as easily bored with. A cat can detect the subtle variences we can't, although I am not a cat it occurs to me as I play with a piece of jewlery wire I just folded a few pieces of cardboard on and fed through that the interest in my DIY is that its not only new it changes how it moves depending on how I hold it...right now I'm typing and sitting on the wire with cats batting at it from all sides, I'm gonna be sorry for making this comment I'm sure of it!

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nice to find such simple and easy toys. I didn't cover it in the video but in their pro version of the toy (I think it's called anyway), they give large numbers of those toys for free to cat shelters. It's nice to see a company go beyond the £££ and give something back. Given the cat sanctuary you run, I'd imagine that's the sort of thing you love to hear about :) Yeah, the wire is quite difficult to see so maybe that helps? Like maybe they think it's a super large fly! haha if you come up with any cool combinations let us know. Maybe we can add them in a follow DIY video in the distant future! :) Thank you for your support as ever. A&K

    We had one a few years ago. It was a hit with 1 of our cats but not the other. It was a bit flimsy, but like you say don't just leave it out for your cats all the time, put it away after you've done that play session. I personally think the springs are better, but I can see the appeal. I've saved enough bottle tops to try the treats floating in a bowl of water in little 'boats' . All 3 loved it! Will do it again with a bigger bowl or tray. 👍

    • @Pepperprojectz

      Interesting 🤔. When we filmed this, all the shots were with the year old one but before we finished the video, we realised we didn’t have the original packaging, so we bought another (not joking, just for the first 2 seconds on the video… 🫠). Strangely we found that the new one seemed much more bouncy compared to the old one. To be fair, that might be because of us shutting it in doors and doing non recommended things with it lol… but still. Your flimsy comment makes we wonder whether there’s something in the metal becoming less effective over time (or something more scientific haha)! 😂 Ooo, that’s awesome!!! Sorry for the mess it likely caused you but really glad it kept them amused, that’s so cool! Yeah, honestly springs are so good. Although I dunno about you but I need to find something to stop these being stuck under the sofa lol 😂 Thank you for your support 😻

I'm wondering if it will be worth buying it for my cat Smokie, who doesn't seem to like many toys. The only toy he loves are plastic springs and I was also wondering if there is any other toys that you could recommend that are some what similar to plastic springs?

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ooo, not yet but it's something we need to do a video on. When our cats were kittens they'd play with it but kittens play with anything... The 2 unique parts of the toy are the 'game' element and the 'support' element for other toys, like the Catit Tower feeders. Game element: Outside of being kittens none of our 4 cats spent time with the circuit and given the size, unless you're willing to take it apart every time, it's quite difficult to rotate away (referencing our 'why cats get bored of toys' video). Supporting other toys: It DOES support other Catit feeders nicely, making them much more stable. Plus, aesthetically, it looks kinda cool. However there are problems. The kibble tends to fall out of the feeder and go in 1 of 3 places; 1. Directly in the puzzle feeder tray (awesome) 2. Into the circuit, which our cats seem to enjoy fishing out from (kinda awesome) 3. Stuck between the edge of the circuit and the feeder. It happens a lot and is very difficult / impossible for your cat to get out, which creates ANOTHER clean up point for you. (sucks) All in all, this seems to be more aesthetically pleasing and useful as a support element for other Catit toys, then something that will entertain your cats. But look, each cat is unique so it might work I suspect though that it's not as useful. On the other toys side, have you tried the finger traps / cat plastic tubes? These seem to have the same unexpected nature that the springs have. Outside of these, Ping Pong balls could also be an option but if your cat is afraid of loud sounds it might take some time to get used to it. And if all else fails... get another cat... lol (be aware it's much more effort than having 1 though, it's like 4x the effort) haha! Let me know how you get on and congrats on being a cat parent! :) <3 Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. A&K

    Instead of straws, make rings out of pipe cleaners as well. That way, the ends won't be a problem. My cat used to play fetch with them. I had to throw them into the cat tree so he could launch himself after them, and he was disappointed if I threw them anywhere else. He doesn't like them as much these days for whatever reason. ^^

      ooo that's an interesting idea and quite a funny image. Have you tried putting them away for 2-3 weeks or switching them with something like a plastic spring or those plastic cat tubes? You'd have to try but maybe that would rekindle the love for the toy (fingers crossed anyway).

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Awe, that sounds very choatic and I know this is easy to say but harder to manage but... try and enjoy it. As they age that energy level goes away, so it will naturally get easier / more manageable. I'm not sure what your current living sitation is but another kitten COULD be the answer as they'll enterain themselves / have somewhere to focus that energy. Cats are increadibly social so having a friend to grow up with can help ALOT. Although, be aware, it's not twice as much trouble, it's like 10x as much, as they seem to gang up and create more issues haha! Aside from that, I'd focus on making sure your house is as catty as possible. There's a ton of furniture you can buy and having multiple types of cat trees or places for them to jump around can help a lot. Equally on the toys side, I'd go for as many self play ones as possible (think springs / finger traps etc). I hope this helps. Shout if you've got any more questions! Thanks for commenting and watching the video!

      he bites me instead, it is kind of prickly but I take it! hahaha! Atm he stopped the biscuits but I'm suspecting it's cos of the heat. He does a tentative biscuit when I come from home and pick him up. I feel his little paws tempting to kneed my arm. He is a little love bug especially in winter when it's more nice to cuddle and exchange body heat hahaha

    I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE PIPE CLEANER...even if you fold the tip over. My cat managed to eat the pipe cleaner and that was an expensive vet appointment to have it removed. Our vet told us even with the tip bent over the tips are sharp and can cut gums easily or scratch eyes.

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh no, we’re so sorry to hear that. We scored down the pipe cleaners for this very reason, in fact the pipe cleaner comes in at 45 (second to last) on our toy comparison score chart (shown at the end of the video). We always recommend supervising cats with any toy but it really comes down to knowing your cat, their environment and assessing the risks. We don’t want to tell the community what they should or shouldn’t be doing. As owners, we are all ultimately responsible and in the best position to judge what is right or wrong. That being said, we’re incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful community of cat parents here, and it’s great to see everyone sharing their experiences, just like you’ve done, to help raise awareness and help us all be the best cat parents. While we haven’t had any issues ourselves, we appreciate you sharing your experience. For us, for example, we’d never leave out a cat wand with feathers because they’d try to eat them, but with supervision, we think they’re fine. But I’m sure that’s not the same for everybody. @ElleDone, thank you for taking the time to both watch and comment on our video. You’d be amazed at the positive impact it can have and we really appreciate you.

      @@Pepperprojectz even the commercial hard plastic springs can be iffy, I have had cats chew them and they twist and break and can be swallowed. Recently tho one of the cats managed to get one of the springs caught in his mouth the spring was out of shape however, convinced me to put them away. Pretty much all toys here are supervised, unless I know its a really safe toy and one toy I just started using that is safe is the plastic bottle top from sparkling wine. Cats LOVE it, because its plastic and I took all the metal tie downs off it, the shape us great since its almost like a top in a way. Can't swallow it, can't get anything caught in it, can't break it plastic is soft not rigdid and the cats play with those tops for hours...or if not for hours they fight over ONE when we have more than that, just like kids, can't share things. Cats are assholes, I love my cats but there are days when I think geez they have me so wrapped I am just another human servant...some reward me with cuddles but mostly I get shouted at for food.

    😭 One of my three indoor cats (Willow, Miyo, and Kiki) has the bald patches on her legs and belly where she over cleans :( Some months she does it more than others and you can tell when all her fur in thos places gets thinner! She is the youngest of my three rescues, and i know it's my fault and because of boredom, I watched your other video about toy rotation! I must try to impliment that. I am always making new toys for them out of cardboard boxes, loo roll, the little handles from paper bags, string etc, but it is definitely a never ending job and i don't think it's enough for Willow she just has such energy and is ALWAYS up for play, and definitely has more energy than the other two, but i've never thought about putting toys away and rotating such a simple idea o: I am currently in the process of buying some new toys and interactive things, especially i struggle to bend down a lot and get down on my knees to play and she happens to enjoy interactive play the most x'D think i need to find some long handle ones so i can stay stood up . But she is a healthy cat in general. It just seems to be boredom related so i have been learning over time how to get better at keeping her stimulated and enriched. I plan to get some cat grass seeds again as they all seemed to love that the last times i grew it for them and i haven't done it in a while. 😅 My oldest cat Miyo. And Kiki the biggest middle child, also show signs of boredom, just not bald patches at least :( but with scratching furniture definitely could be boredom related as you said, and Miyo likes to chew the corner of paper or cardboard in front of me to get my attention though i don't know if that is sometimes a hint for food xD she is also very VERY chatty. She talks a lot, not meowing exactly but like eck ecking but at me or anyone who sneezes, or when opening a can of fizzy, or when she wants the tap turning on.. or if you walk into the bathroom and she is chillin in there she starts eck ecking and going "brrrrrrrr brrrrrrrr" loudly for nuzzles and butt scritches 😅 i always thought she was just a chatty catty but maybe it is also boredom. 🤔 Kiki does randomly meow at random hours of the night too.. But i'm so glad i found your content it has really given me some more ideas and food for thought! I know i've been lacking a bit in their enrichment and stimulation needs and this has given me a bit of a kick there's lots more i can do and try! Thank you! (Edit: i just read in a comment below about flea dermatitis, and though i'm not 100% sure if Willow has it, so I will be making a vet visit to ask about it, vets have seen her previously and not mentioned that, though Kiki does have flea dermatitis, she gets a lil scabby but no bald patches but yes, worth me asking the question at the vets i think! But i'm still convinced my cats do get bored so it's not going to change my approach!)

      Oh no, I’m sorry to hear about Willow’s overgrooming! Cats really are all so different, aren’t they? Our Cookie is much less active than our other two boys-they need a lot of playtime, and if they don’t get it, they start getting into mischief! Miyo sounds like such a character, cheerping at fizzy pop is hilarious hahaha! I’m so glad you found the comment from another subscriber. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful community of cat parents here, and it’s great to see everyone sharing their experiences, it really helps raise awareness and help us all be the best cat parents. Our Oreo has a natural knack for picking things up, so that part was easy for him. We taught him retrieval by firing the propeller toy and calling him back, celebrating each time he brought it to us. In the beginning, we used treats to help him learn. Now, he loves the attention and knows he's putting on a show for us-haha! Thanks so much for watching! 😊

    Thank you for this review. I have three cats. One of those cats is so bored all the time that if he is not playing, he will attack the other two cats. So, we are always looking for new toys to keep him busy and happy. The fishing rod is perfect because ping pong balls are his favorite play time toy and I'm always bouncing them around the house so he can chase them, but then I'm the one picking them up after the game is over. I think it's time I get a toy where I can sit and relax and not have to pick things up all the time. I love watching you pull the toys from under the couch. My three always stick them under the throw rugs then run and slide the rugs all over the house. 😂

    These ideas are awesome! I love the adventure mat. Those carpets can be pricey. My cats favorite budget toy is... hairballs. Similar to wool or felt balls. They really enjoy after I brush them and then roll up their fur in a really tight ball. I have 6 cats, so one brushing session can produce a fairly nice hairball. Sometimes I will roll a ball in catnip and wrap a new layer of freshly brushed fur over it. This holds the catnip in. They go bonkers for those ones!

    Loved all these!! We had a kitten "bloom" with two stray girlz this Spring. They are standoffish but the kittens are socializing REALLY well...but FULL of kitten energy! When it gets cold, they will be in and will need to play. I love the fact you are creating and not soending LOTS of money. Just like human kids, if you buy expensive toys, before long they will prefer the box it came in. 🤦‍♀️ Really love the mat!! Ive contemplated how to make that and now I have your video.🤓😇 I have been sewing much of my life and was excited to see you give it a go. Your beautiful furbabies dont care. Make no mistake, they are judging you, always, but treats help😉😅😻

      The mat is a really interesting one, right? Wolf is obsessed with the Trixie version which costs c£30 and we couldn't find any DIY ones online. Depending on how much you need to buy, the DIY one costs approx £0-8. We could have bought a larger mat but we figured that a DIY version needs to be significantly cheaper to make the time investment worth while, at least to show in a TH-cam video. Two things we'd consider changing to make it more 'pro', would be... 1. Larger door mat (more square) 2. Carpet top, vs. recyclable bag (I suspect an offcut from a carpet shop would be perfect) Lastly, we considered a 'carpet' bottom but you really need something to grip the floor. If someone is laying carpet or if you have some laying about, I suspect a large offcut with some anti-slip rug attachments would do the job (as long as velcro sticks to the carpet). Either way, these carpet 'activity rugs' are easily DIY'able and, as we said in the video, work just as well as the paid version. (Maybe if there's a carpet fitter who comes across this comment they could advise everyone in the future!) haha omg kittens are a handful but really good to hear they are socialising well. There's something incredibly beautiful about kitten energy. I'm looking forward to hearing how they get on with the mat! :) <3 God I know. Bear (our last cat), her 2x fav (DIY) toys were tin foil balls and eyelash combes... it always perplexed me how and why she'd loved these so much. But if they like them, and they're safe, there's little point in spending big £££. Hahahaha The sowing had me in stitches (pun intended...) I couldn't stop laughing watching Kayleigh poke herself with the needle over and over. Honestly I should have added some of those outtakes to the video. I suspect you'd have found that quite amusing! Funny how quickly their judgement disappears when treats get involved, eh? xD haha! Thank you so much for the lovely feedback, comments like this make the time investment in making TH-cam so worthwhile!

    The only automatic toys my cats really like are the "red dot" laser toys that you can now get a robot like one, I think Catit makes them, but I don't think that toy would be popular in my house because the toys that make loud noises often freak the cats out. And when I watched this a few weeks ago and thought of it now was that the fish reminds me of those singing fish you hang on the wall, and those scare the hell out of everyone.

    • @Pepperprojectz
      @Pepperprojectz 29 วันที่ผ่านมา
