Thank you for this information. I registered with apra. Me and my husband wrote two songs all lyrics and the melodies are ours and the studio only did the sound engineering and we spilt on apra only. This is are good knowledge.

1. Identify your audience 2. Identify your brand 3. Communicating your brand 4. Consistency
I get it. I learn to build my audience. So now I'm playing and I have an audience who comes to see me every week and now the Venue can pay me. So once I've built my brand by myself, I'm playing infront of paying punters and I'm running my own show and it's successful, then I will get people who want a slice of what I've achieved by myself. They want to secure the income that I've worked so hard to achieve. So who would be stupid enough to fall for that? As in what do those people think they have, that you need?
I propose to have a fair baby boy (2)

Thanks so much for this really insightful information. I'm not here to be a manager but rather needed to find out about manager role. I was most inquisitive about if managers control private calls of the artist.. eg artist can talk to friends. family, and even fans... without the manager's consent?
I rather not tell what is going on, but Im trying to tell online, this individual Ive been talking to for months is legit, but they say, they can't take calls with me because manager won't let them.
@@MackBell723 Yes, an artist can speak to anyone they wish. This situation sounds very unusual
THIS IS SO INSIGHTFUL THANKYOU SO MUCH!

My God you have the best channel on the planet! Thank you so much, love the way you talk and also very informative, I subscribed, I just have a question, could you make a video about what strategies could an artist use for “converting an audience into a fan base” ?
Thanks for your wonderful comment! Welcome to the channel. I like your idea for the video. We already have a few other videos in the pipeline, but we will cover this topic in the future. All the best
@ thanks man! Cheers
Does PPL pay performers/session musicians for streams?
Not directly. Streaming income is divided (although not equally) between the songwriter and whoever controls the Master recording. The streaming money for the songwriter can be collected through PRS and MCPS in the UK. The streaming income for the Master recording is collected through your distributor. PPL collect a specific type of royalty which is the public performance (playing) of the Master recording such as when the recording is played on radio, TV or retail stores in the UK. The performers on recordings would be entitled to a share of any PPL royalties. Hope that helps
Thank you for this concise description of both the steps and critical components of branding. I'm a fine artist who has an increasing following but I need to start paying serious attention to my branding and audience going forward.
Thanks for your comment. It's much appreciated. All the best with what you are doing

A key note is a producer and a beat maker are 2 different things completely. Thats something you should also explain to your listeners
Not really, but maybe. If they truly just provide percussion, then yes they are a percussionist or “beat maker”. But in reality “beats” is just vernacular now for a musical composition. Usually this includes performances of synths, keyboards/piano, strings, maybe guitar and bass, as well as sampling vocals. At that point it’s just another word for a composer, as the end result is a complete instrumental composition. I’ve never seen any “beat maker” who only provides percussion. Generally when people say “producer” in the modern sense they mean “composer” and generally when they say “beat” it refers to an instrumental composition. The distinction between the original use of the term “producer” is that at one point before digital it meant the person who recorded the song. Now with digital collaboration, the producer is more so the remote composer, and the sound engineer/producer is just a local work for hire person who physically records the vocals.
He knows what he's on about!
Thank you for your time and valid information.
Thank you and lots of booboo's❤

So glad I stumbled upon this, such great advice and said so clearly 🐻🎸
Thank you so much for your comment and kind words. We really appreciate it. Hope the video was helpful for you.
Hi Sir, I'm a new artist (vocalist, don't play instruments) who has 3 to 5 songs only (I do alt rock), I have a great music video (which i think helped me to talk to a few big boys in the music industry after they've seen it). I don't have a band nor $ to hire session musicians to play anything live right now. A month ago, a manager approached me suggesting that he wanted to manage me. We didn't meet eye to eye, so I wasn't going to go with him anyway. I was wondering, am I too early to get a manager if I haven't performed yet? Some say (based on articles I read on the net) that I may be too early cos maybe I haven't performed yet I think? But if that guy approached me meaning it could mean maybe I have more than enough for now? He was trying to suggest to make me perform live as well (apart from like publishing deals etc whatever) and he wanted to help get a band together (but to me, cobbling a band can be the hardest thing on earth unless you pay session musicians, and I've been comfortable with my sonic identity and sound I get to come up with as a solo artist). Not to boast or anything but for conversation sake, people do like my songs a lot. Do you think I'm ready for a manager? Because I don't wanna follow the wrong advice from the net, then wonder years later that I should have tried to find a manager anyway because I've wasted years. Things have been moving slow for me, without much guidance as a newbie and I'm just a struggling indie artist so I would not be able to pay anything to a manager until money starts coming in. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Sir!!
It's difficult to know if you are ready for a manager. There are many variables that would determine the answer. However, a manager should only be charging you commission, which is a percentage of the money you make from your music. This means you shouldn't be paying a manager anything if you are not making money from your music. Therefore, if you have found somebody who wants to manage you on a commission basis then it is usually worth considering. If somebody is asking for a fixed monthly fee to "manage" you then this isn't a standard management arrangement. This would be more like some kind of "artist services" arrangement. This is very different, and you should be clear about what they are providing you for the money they want to charge you. Hope that helps.
@@theartistguides Thank you so much, Sir!! Really appreciate it!
Thank you for the positive advice
Hope it was helpful!
There is also another aspect to all this is that even if a copy right is not registered, it does still exist - you just have to pay the legal bill. So if you write a hit song and somebody steals it, you can still prove to a jury it is yours (such as publishing it online somewhere) and get damages. You can also ruin people's reputation in the process so never steal other people's stuff because you think they are stupid. They may be smarter than you think. Registering something not yours would also be committing perjury on a government document - and the judge likely will not be happy with you. Fraudulent government documents then potentially changes your case from a civil case into a criminal court case. A different judge. Don't mess with people.
Thanks for your comment. You are right that the copyright exists, and you own it, regardless of whether it has been registered. We have done a video on music copyrights if you or anyone else is interested in more detail: th-cam.com/video/NwXkG5ZXP2o/w-d-xo.html One thing to add regarding copyright registration is that the US has a copyright register and it is advised to register music copyrights to help make legal battles easier. However, in the UK and many other countries, there is no similar copyright register or regsitration process for music
I really really miss examples. What do you talk about? Sounds really interesting but I’m not sure. I fully understand. Examples of artists that you have work with and showing “before and after“ would be really good.
Thank you
You're welcome
Amazing channel. How do you feel about targeting royalty free sites like artlist or envato ? Whats the best way to engage them?

Hi Sean, thank for your video it was very helpful! What are your thoughts for a first time Artist Manager starting up, how many artists can they contract themselves too and whats a good amount to start from?
You're welcome, thanks for your kind words. There is no definite answer to your question. It would depend on whether you are doing this full time or part time, whether the artists are already working professionally and what their needs are, how you intend to logistically manage the relationship with each artist, and how much you need to learn still, etc.. It's a huge learning curve if you haven't done it before, but all managers are different and have different key skill sets. We started 12 years ago with 1 artist who was working professionally. You can contract yourself to as many artists as you want, but the more you have the less time you can dedicate to each one, which can place risk on the success of the project. There is a balance you would need to discover for yourself, but there is no reason that you shouldn't aim to build a roster of artists. If you want a crash course in artist management then I'd be happy to work with you on some 1-2-1 coaching calls to help you get started. Feel free to email me if you want. All the best, Sean
When you say owning the recording are you also talking about if the producer makes the beat usually they give full ownership of that as well?
There is not an exact answer, and there can be all types of arrangements and ownership. However, generally, whoever it is that will be releasing, marketing and selling the sound recording, will need to have control, which usually means the artist having "ownership" or part ownership of the sound recording copyright. It is very standard that the producer would then receive royalties from the artist on any income created from that recording. Hope that helps.
As an aspiring manager what are good ways to help build the artists platform and grow their audience?
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, It is difficult (if not impossible) to answer fully. I could literally list a hundred things and more. Success for an artist requires strategy across the whole of the creative journey from the music to the marketing and touring. To build an audience, it starts with the music. I don't know at what stage of growth your artist is currently at, but to find an audience, begin by looking at other artists who may have an audience who might be interested in your artist. You can then target their audiences, to get started
@@theartistguides thank you so much for the feedback. My artist is currently working on releasing releasing her first song on Spotify so we are starting from ground zero, would you be able to also share what are some of the most important things to do and consider at this stage and what did you do if you’ve managed an artist at this stage?
@@bobjackson5525 You're welcome. Build over time, concentrate on establishing your artists identity and be consistent with your releases, branding and campaigns. It takes a while to get the music right, and there is a lot you can do to help the musical development.
