Back in the early 70s I worked part time at a private ski club. I was hired to perform maintenance work. My first job was to replace the flathead straight six in the Tucker cat. Over the next four years there wasn't much that I didn't have to fix. Biggest issue, the steel track rollers. Fairly reliable considering we over worked the crap out of it. Later the club bought a 76 Tucker with the 318 and rubber steel cleated tracks.

Back when ford was tough. Any ford 1979 and below was ok if you couldn't afford a GMC

Nash had a fully developed 4 wheel drive ready for WWI with locking diff on front and rear. Some even stayed running for WWII but were very rare by then as they'd been worked to death over the previous 30 years.

we built these machines at Wausau equipment in New Berlin Wisconsin when I worked there. we would mount them to a truck and drive down to the quarry to test them in the water in the summer time.

I got a 1950 1/2 ton when I was 16yo in 1985, ..traded a 1964 buick special for it which I got for free off a neighbor. I never got to do anything with that truck, because my parents wouldn't let me do anything mechanical in their yard 😞 ..and it wasn't because it was a nice yard, they just didn't like me doing anything. 🙄 🤷 I had so many hopes, dreams and idea for that truck but was eventually forced to sell it, because they didn't want juni hanging around in the yard. Some guy bought ot off me for $2500, all profit, but sure didn't feel like it. Now mind you, my father had 6 old ford vans, rotting, not running filled with junk, 2 boats that never saw water since he bought them, and an old time horse drawn wagon they bought which rotted to the ground, and all sorts of other junk that just sat and rotted into the ground for decades. 🤨 🤷 ..which I wound up having to pay to get rid of after they passed.

I maintained and drove this Model 706 White bus (#386) for the Museum of the Rockies (a division of Montana State University) for 36+ years until it was (unwisely) sold several years ago. Each summer it was driven in historic town tours of Bozeman, Mt and Fall foliage tours into Hyalite Canyon. When auctioned, it had no mechanical faults and had its original Yellowstone Park paint and markings and a new set of tires on split rims. Since the sale, its authentic original finish has been replaced with a very nice new finish, has a new top, new front glass, & had some minor body work due to non-museum mishandling before its sale, and is in good hands with its new owners. I hope that its driveline is kept entirely original (White Truck Company parts are still fairly readily available) and it is not "upgraded"(?) with non-authentic engines and transmissions. Most Model 706's (especially those used in Glacier Park) have been homogenized with late model Ford automatic drivelines, too small wheels and tires, etc. #706 deserves authentic parts and full lubrication every 500 miles and full protection for its aluminum / steel body. Properly driven, a Model 706 has little clashing of transmission gears ("jamming"). Brakes are excellent. Tires are getting scarce, though, and must be conserved. #706 is a great piece of Americana, needing care and weather protection. Best to its new caretakers!

I could see " The king of obsolete" channel having a truck like this. He's up in northern Canada and always prefers old trucks and equipment. He was on the show (Ice Road Truckers) albeit briefly.

Chevy advance design were the best sellers from when they came out in 47' and were replaced by the task force series in 1955. They were like spaceships back then. Thats how new they were at the time

I thought the vehicle started with the Army. In fact the Navy/Marines has a boat stuck up on some rocks and both the boat and personnel were going to be lost. The Army cam to save the say. They sent these two prototype Army "Ducks" and rescues the Navy sailors. The Navy people will never hear the end of that!!

I have a 75, they are extremely reliable, but I’m sure that motors been rebuilt at least at one point. Also, mine has the 2F but also has 4-wheel drums. “Pretty light”? mine weighs the same as my 08 f150, I wouldn’t call it real light…
