Calling a BBS: Retro Computing Experience.
มุมมอง 747วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I take a step back in time and reconnect with the world of Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) - the early Internet before the web as we know it. I’ll show you what it’s like to call a BBS in 2024, exploring how these retro online communities worked and what kind of content you can find today. From the classic dial-up sounds to accessing old-school forums and files, join me as I dive in...

Home ISP setup! USR Courier V.Everything dialing into a Cisco 2811.

A Cisco 2811 setup with a wic-1am-v2, a vic3-4fxs/did and 2 PDVM2-64 cards. Inspired by @clabretro and following a guide by @theserialport. It works well and allows my Win95 machine to surf the web just like back in the day! serialport.org/blog/cisco-router-modem-isp-in-a-box/ If you follow the guide but have issues with DNS on the machine dialing in, add "ip name-server 8.8.8.8" to your config.
2nd Reality on a Sound Blaster Pro?? It's a sin.😄
That power strip though....Yer office wasn't complete without it.
This is my all time favorite game. I had a great message exchange with Hal Barwood, the creator, a few years back where I thanked him for making such a great game. I shared some of the comments with him that were made about it on a popular FB group, where hundreds of folks were praising it, 30 years after it was released.
Love it! Good stuff. Many hours were spent racking up high phone bills on BBSs when I was a kid. Thanks for uploading.
High phone bills? you didn't know about phone phreaking?
Used to be a lot of fun in the early 90's for me as a kid touring different BBS's using the listings in the back of a copy of that month's Computer Shopper.
I used to use BBS's around the San Antonio area in the mid 1980's. Used my Commodore 64 and a 300 baud modem, lol.
I used to log in to Lunatic Labs, somewhere in Los Angeles. Young people today will never understand the pain of endless busy signals-sometimes for weeks. But the pure excitement of hearing the phone ring and the handshake begin? That was a total rush. Simpler times.
or the terror of "Hello??" of a wrong/bad number..
You are right about the 'magic' of the BBSes back then, used to dial in and play one of those doors games (the name is lost to time) after school with my best friend when a kid. Also being able to download stuff like the Doom shareware and user levels from the download section was amazing too. That was the early-mid 90s so the real internet wasn't very widespread yet.
Remember to add *68,, to your dialing string prefix to disable call waiting! Now I'm off to play TradeWars
@@odius94 Always!
Very cool video! I love hearing about this era of computing. was born in the early 90s, so the web was already a thing when I was old enough to understand. Thank you for sharing!
No Problem. I really like this AST 486 I've got and hope to do a few more videos with it.
The good 'ol days. I was on only Dallas based BBS's. The Dog House and Funny Farm were my two. We had a lot of good times on thos boards. Even threw a few BBS parties.
Had a renegade board. Setup a business called BoardTech to sell BBS's. Only sold 1 before realising the internet was going to take over.
Very cool!
Terminate is such an awesome DOS terminal program
What about AE on the Apple // computers?
See again in 2034

Can you 😊post your cisco config?
Working on something for that here shortly!
@@retrorelic the goal I was aiming for was simply adding the basic settings that a dreampi does, but with the ability to inject the line voltage from the wic-1am-v2 (or something similar) and being able to connect to v90 or v92 for full speed, it would be great for posterity and future generations of classic gamers to have
@@narniaphuket In this case the VIC3-FXS/DID card is acting as POTS and is actually suppling the line voltage. The WIC-1AM is just an internal modem the cisco uses to connect and provide a PPP connection. You could use just the FXS card and dial between the 4 ports connected to external devices. As for v.90/v.92 you'll need to setup a digital modem (ISDN) for those speeds. I am working on that too but still in the learning process for that setup.
@@retrorelic that's explains a lot. I've been able to dial out but not in. Any wics or vwics that will work on a 1920 series or 2651xm series router? I have a partner level TAC account and access to any image.
@@narniaphuket Looks like there is a VIC-2FXS that will work in the 2600 series. Its only 2 ports though. I'd look for a cheap 2800 or 3800 series as those support the newer VIC3 cards. You'll also need PVDM cards to supply the voice/audio channels for the FXS cards. Thankfully most of this older Cisco gear is pretty cheap to find on places like ebay.
Those were the days.
I'm glad this era has passed long time ago. . 😂 I remember the day I finally got cable internet. What a life.
Glad you're living well in 2002, I want deliverance from this mandated high speed internet hell
2:40 the cellphone
Takes me way back 😂
There's a lot of nostalgia in this video❤
I also have that monitor, but in black
Contact The 8-bit Guy with it for tech support. 😋
sounds like a clean connection! would love to see the Cisco side
Was my workhorse for my bbs
Still run one for my BBS dial-in node. This setup I'm working on should be step up in stability for it.
