7 Day Photography Challenge: Day 7 - Night Photography
Day 7: Nightscapes (Thomas Heaton Style)
In the final challenge of the week, I venture out after dark to explore night photography. Not Inspired by @ThomasHeatonPhoto as I've never seen him do night photography - even though ChatGPT offered it up as a suggestion. I’ll experiment with capturing reflections, window scenes, harbour lights, and light trails to close the challenge on a high note.

Photography As Social Commentary - nice idea but I miss the mark

Social commentary photography illustrates feelings, situations, cruelty, difficulty, happiness or sadness of people in the whole world. It's about telling stories, provoking thought, and inspiring action. Photography as social commentary isn't a new concept. well done
Thank you 🙏
I stumbled across your channel on my feed and as a 60 odd year old too I feel I can identify more with you than a lot of the ‘professionals’. I am a watercolour painter but photography has been a hobby of mine for many years. Your videos are a joy to watch.
Thanks for watching. I’ve always wanted to learn to paint in watercolours. I wonder if when you paint, you first take a photo of a subject and then paint that or if you just paint from imagination.
@ I use the photo as a starting point, rather than copy it, but also use drawings and imagination. I really enjoy the process of going out into the landscape with my camera and taking photos, if only for the pleasure of it, and this is one reason why I think I connect with your refreshing approach.
Just caught up with your 7 Day Challenge Tudor (I've been out of action). For me as always - nothing to dislike, great performance and narration.
Sorry to hear that John. I hope all is well!
@@TudorSmithPhotography I've been dealing with a severe chest infection for over two weeks that required antibiotics, and now I'm extremely tired. Hoping I fully recover ASAP 😩
Nasty. Hopefully those antibiotics kick in quickly 💊
Great shots & I love the blur.
Thank you. That’s kind of was my first attempt at blurred street photography. I kinda like it and I’m definitely going to give it another try 👍
Very cool shots at the end
I must admit I liked the way they turned out. When driving is always liked that scene and told myself I’d photograph it one day 👍
Folkestone South: With the music, great ambiance :)
Thoroughly enjoyed the week of vids please do another soon, thanks to you I used chat GPt and asked it to come up with some urban photographers on you tube it came.up with a name of Sean Tucker he dis a brilliantl video at night using lights and explaining everything as he went along, keep up the good work with the vids 👍
That’s a great idea for sourcing other YT photographers - using ChatGPT 👍 Some of those others I find to be great inspiration and I lap up their techniques.
Well done Tudor fabulous 7 day challenge. thank you!
Thanks for tagging along Dave 🙏
Great challenge with some great images, thoroughly enjoyed your week and starting to consider doing the same in my area, looking forward to your next foray out
Thanks for being part of the challenge Trevor 👍
Congrats on completing the challenge Tudor, really amazing work. I don’t know how you did it again 🤣 the last one I did, I was stressing out. Thanks for taking us along. I did enjoy this episode a lot! I love myself a good night street photography shoot. You nailed that reflection shot pano, I liked it the most. The bar lounge shot too.
Thanks Keith. You inspired me the first time around and I was thinking of you for this second challenge 🤣 I endured it again although a few of the days were not that good (for me). Still, we must grasp those photo opportunities right?
@ now you’re the one inspiring me! Haha i may think of doing it again 😆
I thoroughly enjoyed being in your company for the seven day challenge. You captured the Dover light reflection brilliantly ,and a very Eerie reflection On the dual carriageway in the fog fabulous.👌
Thanks so much for tagging along on my adventures Tyrone 🙏
Thanks for the journey, followed all 7 episodes and a new subscriber. Nice to see a down to earth approach to photography. BTW I purchased the very same camera about 4 years ago when thinking of a brand move, the colours so good straight out of camera. In the end I switched to Fuji (X-E3 in the clearance around the launch of the X-E4). Still have the Canon and Nikon though). Also watching your other video's, wishing you Good Light.
Hey thanks for subscribing. I’m always very happy with the images as they come out of the Nikon. The internal processing of the images is pleasant enough. Thanks for the good light wishes. I’ve not heard that one before 👍
Lovely relaxing walk in Sandwich, a place I’ve never been to. Looks beautiful. Loved the tunnel of trees and the “spiderweb tree” towards the end. You never disappoint, Tude. Glad I found this one, I had missed it somehow. Good advice!
I always head out not knowing what to expect from my photos and I’m often pleasantly surprised 😊
Another excellent video, Tude. Firstly, I love your easygoing, relaxed style. I loved the magical quality of these photos. I used to take my camera with me everywhere, but that was before digital cameras. I would like to try taking photos now in this brave new world of digital photography. Maybe one day!? Thanks Tude for another great video in this 7 day challenge. I loved the lamps in the first shots, the one of the Churchill Bar and the last couple of shots of the dual carriage way particularly.
❤️
Congratulations Tudor on competing your 7'day challenge. Made for a very enjoyable viewing experience.
Thanks for sticking with it 👍
Again a great challenge Tudor..love the restaurant pic and you captured the mood in all your other pics...I also love taking pics of whatever interests me at the time...I am a bit trigger happy so I take more than one photo of my subject, never just one... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
I like your idea of taking more than one picture on any given subject. I might incorporate that into a video 👍😉
another great video. Can you do as easy to follow video on the basics? iso, shutter speed ect ect thank you.
I’ll see what I can come up with 👍
Another great video Tudor, love the Churchill Cocktail Bar shot in particular.
Dreamy Indeed! Thank you Tudor. The shot at 10:15 looks like a scene straight out of a classic film noir. Fabulous video to end a great series. Excited to see what's next...
Thanks very much Jill. I enjoyed day 7 but then I enjoy night photography so it made it easier for me 👍📷
@@TudorSmithPhotography Yes, your enthusiasm is a definite give away that it's your vibe ((:
Where do you get your challenges from? I'd be interested in receiving challenges from someone, so that I had no choice of subject matter, in other words constrained by the challenge! Great video by the way, nice relaxed vibe and good info.
Ah I've worked back now and seen your day 1 including the explanation! Brilliant use of Chat GPT.
See challenge number 1 - I asked ChatGPT to set all 7 days 👍
If you had a tripod and a strong ND filter the photo of the line of trucks in a queue might be interesting as a long exposure? You'd have the stationary trucks and some red and white light trails either side of the centre line.
Ha ha I've just seen day 5's challenge!
Wow that would look cool. I might just do that shot again sometime 👍
A challenge Worth seeing Industrial and Transportation. I quite enjoy the details of the trains ,and the way you explained what you was doing .yes I enjoyed tagging along .👌
What a great challenge Tudor... photos are 'alive' with interesting activity of transport .. thanks for sharing.. cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Thank you. I quite enjoyed that one. 👍
Great video, as a newbie to photography (and also from Kent) its great that you explain not only the settings but WHY you pick those settings and what you are trying to achieve from the shot!!!!!
Great photos Tudor love the Javelin train, the yellow makes it pop! Also great to see your work is local and not on some expensive and exotic location. Thank you 🙏
Thank you Jayne. Staying local is a good exercise in trying to keep focused with the camera. I guess it’s a good argument that if we can’t capture an image locally then will going somewhere exotic make out images better? Obviously a glorious shot of an exotic sunset speaks for itself but we can capture a sunset at home too right. Anyway I’m waffling now 🤣
Another excellent video, Tude. You’ve done quite a lot of night time long exposure photos featuring car lights. I’ve always liked those.
Yeah night long exposure is a lot easier than day time. Watch out for day 7’s video as it’s about Night Photography 👍
Steady as you go Tudor !, enjoyed the long exposure photos and enjoying your 7 day challenge. Nice going......
Steady - I like that 👍
You're crushing the daily challenge Tudor! Nice area today and fitting for doing some long exposures. I liked the image at 10:10 the most, great job.
Thanks so much 🙏
Pesky orange barriers , stunning shots of the water and bridges and the tree with its roots loved this one good for the mind well done for not slipping . 👌
Thanks Tudor for sharing your experience with great results for this challenge.... great compositions in that area ... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Thank you 🙏
Thought you did very well to get those long exposure water pictures especially without a polariser or ND filter. Think you should take K&F up on their offer. I have a couple of their filters. Good quality at a reasonable price. Though I suspect yours will be gratis. Good work Tudor has been an interesting week so far.
That’s what I thought too. I replied to their email and now I’m just waiting to hear back. It’ll be interesting to see what they’re proposing. Two more vids on the challenge to go 👍
great video!! lovely to hear your thoughts as you decide what to shoot!
Thanks. Yep you what though, I reckon a lot of patience is actually required for this kind of photography 👍
I remember going there last year, the cafe is very good I stopped for Lunch in between taking Photographs loving the Challenge keep going only two days to go, Colin.
It’s not a bad little cafe actually. I often pop in there when I’m just wandering around the place 👍 Two more vids to go yay!
Very nice, shame those orange barriers are there, time for a new ball head as well as that one looks a bit loose
I agree on both counts. Don’t those authorities know that the scene is a Kodak moment? 🤣 I’ve had that tripod for about 4 years now. Time for an upgrade. I understand K&F Concept do a Carbon-Fibre option 😉
Nice photos Tudor, I love Dungeness but not been for a few years. Shame about the boat I have some photos of it but why set it on fire, I can't understand the mentality of some people.
Yeah it’s a mystery to me. Perhaps people think they are leaving their mark - like that sycamore tree on Hadrians wall!
I felt that cold , the old hut with the lighthouse behind it a brilliant picture , and my favourites are the walkway scene and the bench at the end it gave me Empathy.
Oh wow! I love that the images evoked emotion. Thanks for sharing that. 🙏
Well done throughout. Obviously, the board walk, who wouldn't like that one. The bench is perfect for B&W, the one offset left, I prefer. And the beach tower. It stands well alone, but with the minimal people, it "comes to life" as an overlord creature. Talking and shooting are fundamental to You Tube photography, but no one balances it as well as you do. Bravo! As they say in theatre.
Thanks very much 🙏
Excellent video, Tude! Loved the background music too, just perfect.
Thank you lovely x
Better weather than when I was there, just a tiny thunderstorm and sidewise rain. You got some good pictures from that location.
I’ll bet those adverse weather conditions would have provided some excellent images 👍
@@TudorSmithPhotography It may not be the safest of things to go out in that location in a thunderstorm.
Great pics for this challenge Tudor.... another interesting video in the cold... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Love it there, one of my favourite places with so much when you look
It sounds like you’re encouraging me to visit without vlogging - just to wander around with the camera. You’re right though, plenty to see near and far 👍
The walkway scene is STUNNING. Thank you for braving the cold to show us some great shots.
Thank you. It’s a very interesting place for photography.
You have inspired me to go to the woods Tudor , love the photos you shot of nature
You could do it at Richmond Park too I reckon 👍
@@TudorSmithPhotographyyes might do as thinking about going to Richmond this week 📸😊
It’s a huge subject area - perhaps it needs breaking down to, say, social reform / economic decline etc as projects
Absolutely. I tried to cover too much in this video. But now that I’m aware of it as a concept I can perhaps do another video when the opportunity arises 👍
I like the "hangers-oners," but the mud puddle didn't do it for me (it didn't seem that it did it for you either. :-)
I guess it goes to show that not every session is perfect. One or two good shots but on the whole I found that challenge uninspiring. Better videos to come I promise 👍
Wow Tudor. An interesting idea asking AI to give us challenges! Kudos on starting another challenge like this! The Day 3 popped on my feed but thought Id start with this one and work my way through 😁 You did great on this one. A fabulous sky indeed, colorful sunrise. It just exploded! Loved the peaceful wide shot at 9:18 and the sunrise ones. You shouldve asked the seagull to fly by in all of them 😂 the one with the ship too. Very neat. look forward to this series.
I’m a glutten for punishment. You’d thing I learned my lesson last time.
You caught some fine details of those Leafs relaxing nature walk .
One or two good shots eh? An exercise likethis does show that not every picture is a winner.
Very good, Tudor. Maybe you should concentrate on five or six pictures; then, you would not feel so rushed.
Good idea. I always try and cram in too much.
Yes what a challenge...I like the results and your subjects quite interesting....yes I would also be out of my comfort zone but you did well... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
I must admit that I didn’t enjoy that challenge at all. It didn’t help that I was concentrating too much on that stupid DJI which kept playing up and loosing focus. Still it’s done now and I don’t need to repeat it lol. Better vids to come 👍
The last three photos are superb and fulfil your brief. I look forward to the next 6 days.
That's encouraging to hear, thank you. The effects of the light on the landscape right?
Good Morning What you are doing is something different so It's bound to be more taxing on your enthusiasm and vlogging can be gutty at times, on one of the days do a silent shoot and just upload Images with your own thoughts by way of captions, best wishes, Colin.
Oh I like that idea - a silent shoot but just with all the ambient sounds around me. I may well give this a go. Thanks for the suggestion 🙏
@@TudorSmithPhotography I am sure you will do it well C.
