Product launch: MIDI selectors
Get them at JCM-1.com here:
jcm-1.com/product-category/hardware/1bit-fever-dreams/
I designed these myself with EasyEDA and it's a follow-up from a previous video on my channel:
th-cam.com/video/0_2zPKHGjAY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=C4QIB3opYvqehg3R
These MIDI selectors create one link at a time between a selection of one MIDI signal producing device (like a computer, synth, drum machine) to a selection of one MIDI signal consuming machine (like a Sound Canvas, MIDI module, or another computer with MIDI in).
Rapidly change your configuration in a package that costs WAY LESS than the standard “MIDI THRU” boxes that multiply signals. With this, you can avoid re-plugging cables between your various vintage MIDI friendly equipment. Just supply your own MIDI devices and MIDI cables, select the input and output sources, and you’re good to go!

Grace Kelly (Mika) Challenge on a Macintosh Plus
As a new owner of a macintosh 512K and plus, these tutorials have been amazing. Thanks for sharing
That’s so cool!
Sup Ashton! I love your channel! Thanks for stopping by
WoW that is really neat Great Video amazing you candy that on the Plus
What bench PSU is that and how are you powering your plus?
Just a generic 30 VDC bench PSU, it isn't connected to the Plus at all. its main supply line was off but I was powering a usb lamp nearby with its front usb port. The plus was powered with a regular mains cable.
Javier did a great job with that mouse!
Great Video Michael Love it
Glad you enjoyed it Dave!
Loved this game. Quite an informed game and gave me an early education on different commanders and aspects of history too.
I had a hard time winning most scenarios when I was little. But the level editor was great to give me an outrageous superiority right from the get go!
Was done in 2 separate parts, the sound was added later by banging foam bats on metal garage doors and recording the samples using an Apple II + A2DC card and transferring them to the Lorraine proto. The demo is not meant to be fast, the A1000 chipset has 3.5mb/s bandwidth so clearly it was never about speed, it was about shadow over the grid, fluid cycling for animation and audio quality.
Borat, you now make C programs?
Thanks for engaging with the channel!
i wonder what will happen if i shove a guitar amp into this
I don't own any, since as you've seen, I'm leaning into the world of acoustic, but feel free to share what happens if you go ALL THE WAY!
Those particular eBay sellers are dreaming. They appear for $40-$60 when a sane seller puts them up. Great video.
Thanks!
18:58 How freaking cool!!
how about 3d printed enclosure?
I'm just getting started with small diy PCBs of my own, but I own no 3d printers. Here, you'd need a solution that doesn't restrict access to the switches, so only a bottom raft would be necessary
Yaaaaas canyons.mid! Nice products!
Thanks for making a video of this, I would have liked to make one myself.
Excellent tutorial; that is a process!
This open A sound is too high

@@1BitFeverDreams its sounding like a B
Great project! I used MacRecorder to capture all of the audio for a student film in the early 90's. Was so proud of myself until I got to the mixing stage and wondered "why does it all sound so crackly"? :)
haha! thanks for sharing. did you keep footage of it?
@@1BitFeverDreams I think I've got it somewhere, would have to do some digging...
@@ErikLoyer Please do. I'm sure a lot of us would love to see/hear it.
Beautiful
That’s a beautiful game.
the art was by industry veteran Mark Stephen Pierce www.mobygames.com/person/72867/mark-stephen-pierce/
I'm now playing with Studio Session trying to make some meta vaporwave on a Macintosh Plus
Wow, yeah that's an involved process.. but super fun results in the end!
Wow, looks nice! I remember the original and played with it some. The audio reminded me of the AMS on the Atari 8bit.
Very cool, and thanks for sharing
Otamatone!
My very first Mac was a Mac Plus. Bought it new with a MacReorder in 1989. Loved all the old Farallon products, especially Timbuktu.
Who still code on 30 year old pc, crazy
Amigas, Apple II and C64 all get some love still today. thanks for stopping by
this was my era as a new professional programmer in the late 80s, and this particular tool was really great. X Code, VS Code and VS are bloated messes, while ThinkC was laser-focused on making old-school Mac apps in C and later C++.
I’ve not seen the Pi option, likely a lot cheaper than the original sound canvas hardware, i brought my sound canvas sc-55mkII about a year ago from a Japanese ebay type site, was approx £200 uk, the legendary MT-32 that you have 1-bit are literally unobtainable these days unless you sell a kidney
definitely something to consider then. a Pi3a (with only 1 usb port instead of 4) is more than enough powerful for this. you could even source one from the used market if you don't currently hold extras of those. Just need to get the mt-32pi hat or make your own to your heart's content, which could imply a rotary encoder for volume, 2+ buttons, etc.
@@1BitFeverDreams I would like to play some old sierra games on the Mac and they’re all Mt-32 based, so it sounds like a good work around. I’m happy with the sc-55 for the music side but it’s quite right in my-32 mode. First is fix the av board when i get a free weekend.
Where did you get all the midi samples from? Or did you actually make it all from scratch?
They are disks that were hanging around at my parents' house. You can see a picture of them in the first few seconds of the video. I will put them up on archive.org when I catch a second.
@@1BitFeverDreams a brilliant, yes I did see the floppy. I didn’t connect the dots, Friday afternoon brain lol. Some great work you’ve done. I take it you’ve been into music and midi for years? I’m a complete novice on music making but nostalgia and seeing these old machines and not been able to afford them as a child/teen was a big draw, plus the simplicity of the older software
I've added them to Macintosh Garden, check the description for a link
I’ve been meaning to watch your videos for a while. Great to see what you can do on the tech. I too have an old Mac se/30 and Roland sc-55 so been meaning to set it and have a go but had to pause to recap the psu and now the av board need doing so not likely to get it sorted for a few months. Looking forward to giving it a go even with no musical talents whatsoever lol
What a great stickers collection! I only have two (soon it will be four) of those…
Than you! I'm 2 years into interacting with the vintage Mac communty
Some of those names in the About box are still at Apple today!
very neat!
What software would you recommend for opening these up and seeing how they're made? I've tried with Midigraphy but it can't open .mid files apparently.
I've done this recently as a matter of fact. You can use any hex file editor to see the bytes. I personally used NotePad++ with a hex viewer plugin. You must dig in the MIDI 1.0 spec to see how the header section and track sections work out. In due time, you can recognize common commands such as Note On, Note Off, Program Change, etc.
@@1BitFeverDreams Ah, not exactly what I meant. I'm looking for a graphical interface for Midi data, something like Logic, where you can see the midi tracks, with all the notes and dynamics represented. I don't know, maybe Cubase does that in a different interface, I haven't played around with that one yet.
@@indy1725 Cubase can import midi file and you can look at the notes in piano roll form (laid out horizontally), track per track
@@indy1725I have cubase 1.0 on my se/30 but not had chance to use it properly. I tried it but then my mac stopped working a few days later so didn’t get very far. I’m also a novice and never used gui based multi track before. Maybe I should have tried on a new computer first lol
@@NealPalmer-x9e a proper cubase crash course video is on my to-do list
very cool!!
Excited for when the boards come in!
Great Job! Now you need to integrate AI! The flavor of the day! LOL
Lolz, push button with latch that makes the AI spit out an unsettling auto-generated tune to the output you chose
Brings back memories of simpler times, from the dawn of multimedia PCs to the days of MySpace, when MIDI files were the soundtrack of social media. These do have a certain timeless quality to them. Thanks for sharing!
These are really good. I'll be ready for my next 16-bit karaoke party!
Sweet!!!
hahaa awesome! Took me right back hearing the smooth tunes from Kiss (is) on my List
Actually, surprisingly good.
Love it!
Yeah... but then you'd have to give Apple and/or Steve Jobs money. Go Amiga!
I had the pleasure (and honor) of helping port Corel Draw 6 to the Power Mac, using CodeWarrior on System 7. As dev environments go, that was pretty sweet.
I don't know if I'll watch the whole thing, but I love that you're doing it. I played this with my girlfriend in about 1987 or so and we really enjoyed it. I'm not much of a gamer, and this was one of the few games I've played all the way through. I thought the UI was really clever at the time.
Would you believe that there are way more players of the NES ports of Uninvited and Shadowgate that are active on the internet than those original versions? The graphics might be in color and there might be background music, but the secret sauce of higher res and mouse+keyb interface makes this unbeatable imo
Love this! Great stream, I wish I’d caught it live. 👍
Thank you! I should be doing Uninvited next within the next week or so. Stay tuned for an announcement more than 10 hours in advance, I promise!
That is an impressive spaghetti!
It's a me, mario

I had that hdmi grabber and it was adding a lot of latency. Was trying to use it to record ps3 gameplays but had to use another one instead.
