NYC Based Bicycle Commuting and Other rides! I like building, riding, and maintaining bikes! I also do other stuff! Love You! 👋👋👋
A VERY WINDY New Year 2025 NYC Bicycle Commute
I technically rode to work yesterday as well, but welcome to 2025. This was definitely one of those days that lived up to the wind icon being the primary weather symbol, as it felt like I had a wall of wind in my face the entire commute 😂

It was cold and windy again today, and I probably would have benefited from a wind breaking base layer today because the baggy winter jersey I wore was letting some of the chill through. I decided to underdress a little bit because I lost my regular winter tights and had to wear my heavy duty winter tights, so I wore a lighter shirt with a wind proof vest and it was pretty nice! The wind was kicking me around though. It looks like I need to replace my rain gloves after many years of service. A Wet and Misty NYC Bicycle Commute
มุมมอง 97621 วันที่ผ่านมา
The forecast said rain would come in later tonight, but it wound up being misty for the entire ride instead. I guess Apple's budget for their weather app wouldn't be big enough to have a separate marker for something like misty rain 😂 Donate to the Gaza Sunbirds Para-Cycling Team: www.justgiving.com/page/savegaza #bikecommute #bikenyc #bike #nyc #brooklyn #queens #bikelife #gazasunbirds

The only downside was that because I was wearing rain gear, I got a little overheated, but I figured the moment I took anything off, it would start to rain again 😂 Donate to the Gaza Sunbirds Para-Cycling Team: www.justgiving.com/page/savegaza #bikecommute #bikenyc #bike #nyc #brooklyn #queens #bikelife #gazasunbirds

Man, you were really bombing out on this one! 🚴🏽👍🏽
Happy new year Brian!! I just had a 2 hrs ride and still watching yours. Greetings from Romania!
Happy New Year, my friend! May 2025 bring you open bike lanes and no cars trying to turn into you. Take care!
Thank you so much!
Happy New Year, man. We’ll see you in 2025. Stay safe.
Thank you! Same to you!
Sometimes, it's nice to have a little break from riding. It makes that first ride back, even more special and enjoyable. Have a Happy New Year, Brian! Take care!
This is definitely true!
Fro the life of me I've never understood why people choose to walk in a bike lane when cyclists are present when there is 12 feet of sidewalk to use.
People do all kinds of questionable stuff 😂
Are you rocking SKS Raceblades?
On this bike I have SKS Speedrockers since I need the wider tire clearance :)
@@BrianMcDonald Nice, I use the same, but on a steel gravel bike! great piece of kit
Not sure if it's a new bike or just a new sticker, but that hummingbird is fly.
I love your commute rides from new york city. I‘ve been to new york once, but i watch the videos and think, i would love to cycle in new york city. But it looks really stressful compared to german cycling infrastructure. Keep the videos up. Nice work. Greets from the most beautiful german city, Nuremberg 🙌🏻
Maybe one day we can trade places! 😂 It would be nice to experience the better infrastructure that is out there
The sound of the brakes saved you from the truck.
Comes in handy sometimes! 😂
You should put the camera higher 🙏
Why tf would someone drive in NYC, looks like hell
There are people that drive for a living and there are people you drive to leave the city to work.
Hell is in Bucharest. You should go there. 😂
You entrust your life to drivers when you ride in a big city. Knowing that a high proportion of them are so reckless with their own future (not to mention their family's future and the future of the USA) as to vote for Donald Trump would be enough to convince me to find some other form of transport - and I cycle about 8000 miles a year.
No matter what mode you take, you inevitably have to interact with cars unfortunately
You bet I'd give ya a wave and a "hey buddy" back.
I'll be ready for it!
great stuff, what do you use to record and what are the settings?
I use a GoPro Hero 9 with chest mount and I use low contrast,4k30, auto iso to 800, auto shutter, and I have sharpness on the lowest setting
Ayoo nice video! And if you don’t mind me asking what gear ratio do you usually use?
On this bike I have a 1x 48T chainring with a 10-52t cassette. On my other bike I have a 2x 48/35 chainring with a 10-33 cassette
@BrianMcDonald have you ever had a clip out fail? How do you normally prevent such from happening, if you have never experienced such?
@@BrianMcDonald oh, yours is higher then mine! Mine is 50/34 11-36
I've had two clip failures out in the wild...One was early on when I first started using clipless, and then the other was a handful of years ago when a UPS truck ran a red light as I was starting to cross an intersection and had to stop so quickly that I forgot to unclip 😂
@@BrianMcDonald thankfully your life was spared. In terms of miles or km how far is your commute to work?
I do remember from 80s and 90s, when watching american movies where scenes were shot in NY, there was loads and loads of snow everywhere :) But it's same here in Europe. We had 90 degrees C yesterday, and 10 degrees C right now.
The past few winters have been very mild here, but this one definitely takes the cake!
Holy moly your journey is like the Hunger Games! 👀All those vehicles blocking legitimate biking facilities really sets me off! 😠
At what point, after a refusal to stop people from parking in bike lanes illegally, is it ok to start smashing windows and removing wheels from cars? 😂
@@BrianMcDonald What's also interesting is that NY council members deliberating on forcing cyclist to get a license plate and a license 🪪. Madness‼️🤦🏾♂️
On one hand, many people don't even know what type of bike they are talking about when they refer to "e-bikes" since a lot of people are actually talking about mopeds when they say e-bike. On the other hand, the complaints and concerns that people have with e-bikes are already covered by existing laws that are currently not being enforced by police (just like blocked bike lanes, car drivers running red lights, parked in bus lanes, blocking intersections etc). So those new licensing laws just waste resources to create a new "roadblock" that just like everything else will have no enforcement avenue and will do nothing to solve the "problem". Even the people that are rabid about e-bikes rightfully claim that "when <insert bad e-bike related occurrence> happens, the cops won't even do anything about it", and that does reflect the true problem with street safety because when you look at statistics and see the true dynamics of what is harming New Yorkers, it's car drivers and the lack of enforcement of the dangerous habits that take lives. So even when you try to find common ground and show a real solution in addressing things proportionally for all demographics instead of just focusing on anecdotes, you lose them because they are in the "debate" for selfish reasons and don't want to see/implement actual proven solutions.
@BrianMcDonald well said 🚴🏾♂️👍🏾
Where you commute as much as you do, are you able to get out on rides that aren't commuting? Or, is most of your riding for commuting purposes? Thanks for bringing us along today, man! Take care and have a good rest of the week!
I'd say normally I have time for some social rides and stuff like that but lately my work has been busy so I haven't had time for it. I'd love to be doing more long distance stuff, but I'll make sure to do that when I can!
The weather is really strange. In Berlin we've had 52°F (11°C) and it felt like spring. I used the short bib shorts just like you did! 😀
That 52/11 range is around my favorite temperature but it's still weird to have it in December 😂
First view, first comment, first thumbs up. Enjoy watching your commute with my Wife to relax with a gin and tonic. Did my 21-mile ride today.
Wish I could have done a ride like that too! Thanks for the comment :)
Hello! What are your dropbar width? For city commuting?
I have 36cm bars on both of my bikes, although I prefer the flare that these handlebars have over the non flared bars on my other bike.
@@BrianMcDonald wow, great! It's insane) i just ride on my long base gravel bike on 44cm but think about 42 because ride in my city its more like 60%roads and 40%cross-country ahaha
My shoulders are narrow so it's not a big adjustment to be on 36, but after using 40cm for a while it felt more normal to me when I went to 38cm.
Friend, I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I love your channel, when I want to distract my mind I go cycling, your videos cheer me up
Glad you found me! I agree that riding really helps our brains!
Is New York permanently under a sepia filter? pretty city regardless
That's just what it is like when the sun is right in your face 😂
Love this video! I just got into biking. Is this on a gopro?
Yeah! I use a GoPro Hero 9 with a chest mount
Yo if you don’t mind me asking what’s your maximum sprint speed??
I'm not sure at the moment...With this bike while using the 42mm tires I have it's definitely a challenge to get to higher speeds on level ground, probably near 28=30mph. I haven't really done efforts like that lately though 😂
@ that’s absolutely impressive despite the tire width! I am around 25 to 27mph with 25mm tires so that says alot about your speed!
how do you stay worm in the thin thing
I think the main factor is whether a layer can block the wind. Something that is thin that can block the wind makes you feel a lot warmer, and typically I'm generating heat by pedaling, so I try to find a balance where I'm not too hot or too cold
@BrianMcDonald OkAy
@@BrianMcDonaldThese cycling gear may look thin and flimsy but they do provide a sensible amount of insulation.
20:06 "Tsk, tsk" That made me chuckle. What's on the maintenance list this weekend?
@@johndunbar2393 😂 I need to do a drivechain clean and redo my tubeless sealant. if I'm feeling extra motivated I'll bleed and clean my brakes too!
6:50 A slide under the trailer would've been worthy of any 80's bike film. Lol That would've brought in the viewers! Thanks for bringing us along! Take care and have a good weekend!
@@johndunbar2393 I'll have to start practicing sliding and getting up without unclipping! 😂
Love your videos! Where do you get your gear for these cold winter rides?
Historically I have got stuff online, in store at places like REI, and occasionally on eBay. Lately I've had better luck getting deals on the manufacturers' online stores, from companies like Gorewear. I used to be more proactive but if you constantly are on the lookout you can get good stuff at big discounts.
Damn, NY seems to be one ugly city
Why not witness it in person to confirm? 😂
what model of bike?
This is a Fezzari Shafer
@@BrianMcDonald thanks, I found it in the comments
You don’t need to include “actual” in the title. It is redundant.
@@dryburn The context here is that there was a string of 60/70/80 degree weather in October and November, and this ride was the first day where we got temperatures that you would expect to encounter in mid-November.
Cool video! Which bicycle model do you ride?
A Fezzari Shafer :)
Good ride today. I prefer riding on a cold day over a how one -- how about you?
I definitely prefer being colder than being too hot, as long as I have stuff on to prevent me from getting numb or frostbitten. This year has been more difficult in finding a comfortable balance because the weather is shifting so wildly and it's hard to acclimatize normally.
why are people still driving in urban areas ? and then complain about traffic
Relaxing
Rainy days are like that!
Nice ride
Yeah today was really nice even with the wind!
Do you have fenders? Or did you get wet line on your back?
I have front and back fenders :)
th-cam.com/video/RYjwAD7qlSc/w-d-xo.html
i like my commute drippy, bruh
Keep it drippy!
What kind of clothing do you wear for the rainy days?
I have a Showers Pass jacket/pant combo, and my shoes are fizik winter shoes that are waterproof. I have some Gore rain gloves as well that I need to replace.
Even though we live on opposite sides of the planet I deal with the same kind of weather as you. Tell me do you wash your bike after each ride or once at the end of the week?
I wipe the drivetrain and reapply wax coating to my chain after rain, and I will give a towel cleaning/gear wipe cleaning when it is gross, and then do a full cleaning when I think it's necessary
Idk how u've got into my feed but its awesome. Hi from Moscow
Glad you found me! 👋
same climate here at rio de janeiro this week. i have a poncho for rainy days but i also have a totally different setup. good to see a friend for another country having the same "bad day" as me
Solidarity with you! How successful do you think you are in staying dry? I don't really try much to keep my head dry personally
Thanks for bringing us along for another ride, Brian. It's appreciated!
I appreciate the comment!
Where is the speed and watt display? Would be nice to see your average speeds
I don't really have the time to do the extra labor with overlays and fancy editing when my videos earn a dollar in revenue 😂
@BrianMcDonald over a few months that dollar would help. Keep the faith
My original idea was to try something out with a lot of fancy video game type overlays but I really don't have enough time to do a major vfx job like that 😂
sweet Bike!
Thanks!
I hope you get the heat wave soon, its nice and toasty in nc!
Unfortunately the warmth came with rain and now that it stopped we are back to 27 degrees at the time I write this 😂
Been watching your videos for a few weeks as I’m getting back into road biking (switched to mountain biking 6 years ago). Need advice on cold weather clothing. What gloves and jacket are you wearing (or perhaps you have a recommendation)? Thank you very much. Love from AZ.
What temperature range are you talking?
@@BrianMcDonald It’s AZ so dealing with 45 deg. in the morning and evening, 70 during the day. Lets not talk about summer 😂. But long bike shorts and long sleeve shirt but getting cold when the sun sets. Yes, I am a desert rat.
I think I'm a little more cold weather favoring than the average person so what I wear in 45-50 degree weather may not match your style. I usually wear a medium weight long sleeve jersey, regular bib shorts (although I got some Gore ones recently that have some thermal protection in the crotch area 😂 they're good for cooler temps), and I'll just wear my regular summer road shoes and socks. As for gloves I'll wear Gore C3 windstopper gloves until it's 40 degrees. If it was between 40 and 45 degrees I might wear a windproof vest, and if the temps are closer to 40 I'll put on some leg warmers unless I purposefully want to feel a little zesty 😂. If it was 70 degrees I'd be wearing normal jersey/bib shorts and shoes with my Giro Trixter full finger summer gloves.
