Join me on a walk through Scotlands historic National Wallace Monument all the way to the magnificent Crown viewing area on top. The monument built on top on the Abbey Craigs which overlooks the historical landscape of Stirling and the surrounding area. The monument was build in the 1860s to remember William Wallace who was one of Scotlands greatest sons and hero’s. Wallace played a prominent part in early part of Scotlands wars of independence against England and this monument sits on the hill top where Wallace and Scotland’s other military leader of the time “Andrew De Moray” based their Scottish army before the famous battle of Stirling Bridge (11 September 1297) which the Scots decisively defeated a numerically superior English army (featured in the Mel Gibson film Braveheart. From the monument you can see the area of the battle of Stirling bridge, Stirling Castle and Cambuskenneth Abbey (all important landmarks from the Scottish wars of independence and medieval history in general.
Also the monument contains the famous Wallace Sword and a replica of Robert de Bruce’s sword. Not to mention the stunning stained glass windows and busts of famous Scottish men and women.
