Annette Gives a Driving Clinic Hosted by Laura at Horsey Haven Ranch
January 25, 2025 This is long but intended to be a “happy memory” video of the delightful and instructive  time we all had at the driving clinic
Laura hosted this gathering at her ranch of her driving friends because “Carriage driving is a dying art and we are the ones to carry it on into the future so we should share our knowledge and expertise with each other to expand the joy we feel in our sport!“
Annette Nylander conducted the educational driving presentation to give us a review of harness types, bits, wagon, and carts used for our driving horses. We discussed what to use, why and when, maintenance needs of different vehicles and factors to consider to match equipment and intended use to the size of the horse, etc.
After the presentation we gathered back into the barn for a scrumptious potluck picnic to chat and share ideas.
 My iPhone was not fully charged so I was very selective in taking video so missed some very interesting discussion and comments. Annette and Laura had prepared a wonderful display of harnesses laid out as they would be placed on the horses.and two carts up at the barn, served as good demos of different size carts and discussion of the wheels and maintenance. This sort of thing isn’t normally my forte to take video, but it was so interesting that I wished I had a backup battery on my phone and a better sense of knowing how to be in the right place at the right time. Hopefully next time…..

December 7, 2024. Laura took these shots of me, driving her Haflinger pair, Honey and Sue while she followed in the cart with Terri driving Gracie. We drove all around Traylor Ranch Reserve and at the spot where we make a big circle Laura got out and got some nice shots of us on the return loop. The girls did great; it was a beautiful day and a relaxing drive!

Lovely to see! Green grass?? No snow? Yikes. I had a family group out for a sleigh ride today, -6 8 inches of fresh snow yesterday on top of 4 inches from a few days ago. You are so fortunate to have a group like that able to get together.
Thank you! Yes, we are lucky to be able to drive year-round in the CA Central Valley and Sierra Foothills. Laura has a sleigh but she put wheels on it. Otherwise would not have been used at all.

There are actually some horses in this class that look like real draft horses - deep bodied, wide chested, thick necks.
Yes, I agree, stout, old-fashioned farm type conformation. Many of the horses in the Ladies & Gentlemen’s Pleasure classes were also shown later in the Farm Wagon and Farm Implement classes too.
I wonder why they did not show us the winner.
Although I like to try videoing the entire class, I cannot always stay to see the winner especially when my friends are entered in the class. I make my exit when they exit the arena so I can maybe get a few shots of them back at the barn too.

Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed seeing your pair. I live in Knightsen CA and when I first moved here there was someone who drove a four in hand hitch on the roads around my neighborhood. I think they were Belgians. The first time I saw them was a foggy morning as I was driving to the P. O. I saw a red triangle on the back of what I thought was a tractor or wagon so I slowed way down and to my astonishment was behind an amazing horse drawn wagon! Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.
