Phil's World
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 มิ.ย. 2014
Longer videos about Trail building related projects, involving but not limited to building trails, and fixing equipment.
I document the building process as it happens. Sometimes i don't know what I'm doing, and sometimes I do. I try to showcase most everything that we experience so that others can learn from our successes and mistakes.
I've ridden bikes my whole life, from BMX to MTB. I enjoy building as much as i much as i love riding. You might know my other channel Skills with Phil, which is dedicated to riding.

This Build Took A Whole Year, Let's Hope This Works Out!
This was the Biggest challenge we've ever taken on. Hailey and I volunteered our summer to Build an adaptive mountain bike trail with BC inspired features. We are built through some of the most heinous boulder gauntlet. Everybody who walked this section said it was not going to be possible. Going into this phase of the build we knew this was going to be the most hardest part of the build but that's also what made this so rewarding.
This trail will be officially opening in 2024 as part the Driving Range.

Installing Drainages and Rerouting a Climbing Trail
มุมมอง 6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
We are the trail network that I was building all last year. There were a few sections at this trail network that that always had water flowing through the trail which made those sections of trail awkward to ride. There was also a serious safety issue where the climbing trail and descending trail shared a 40ft stretch of trail, this was not ideal so we fixed that.

Splitting Boulders And Rock Armoring A Small Stream Crossing On a Trail
มุมมอง 15K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
There's a few wet spots on our trails that get muddy early season. We've already fixed a few, but today we're fixing another section using a different method. We're Splitting a few boulders to create flat paver stones that we'll use to rock armor through the muddy bits. This is my first time splitting stone with feathers and Wedges so we'll see how this work out. Here are the tools and equipmen...

No Turning Back, Building Our Way Out is The Only Option! | "Skidmarks" MTB Trail Build Ep. 4
มุมมอง 107K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
A no-nonsense look at how we turned a rocky mess into a mountain bike trail. Over the course of the 2023 Summer Hailey and I built a BC inspired mountain bike trail in Bolton Vermont at a trail network Called the Driving range. This is the first trail network in the US built with adaptive riders needs in mind. We spent nearly a thousand hours combined working on this project and all 100% was do...
No Room For Error, Building Between a Rock and a Hard Place | Skidmarks MTB Trail Building Ep #3
มุมมอง 16Kปีที่แล้ว
This section of our mountain bike trail build was our first big challenge. Throughout this build we had been getting hammered with rainstorms making a difficult job, harder. We are picking up where we left off in the last build, which is attempting to route trail over a boulder, and then through tight Tree/Rock pinch through all the while going across a steep slope. This trail is part of at a n...
Clearing Trees After an Unexpected Windstorm | Skidmarks Trail Build Ep 2 ½
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
This video takes place between the second and third phase of our trail build series at the Driving Range. Hailey and I had a few mountain bike trips planned, but just a few days after we finished the second phase of the trail build, our area was hit with a period record rainfall. This rainfall would span most of July and into August and included a major flood and a few heavy windstorms that wou...

Moving Equipment and Flagging New Trail in Bolton VT | Skidmarks Ep 0
มุมมอง 4.3Kปีที่แล้ว
I need to move my excavator in preparation for a new project. This summer I will be building an Expert level MTB trail that will be open to the public. While I've built many trails by hand before, this is the first sizable projects I've taken on with the help of my Cat 301.7 Mini Excavator. I'm very excited to bring you along for the ride, but we have a long road ahead of us.
Fixing A Seasonal Mud Bog On A Mountain Bike Trail
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
There's a low point on this trail that doesn't drain well. This creates a mud bog in the early spring and late fall and ended up rutting up. While this isn't a huge mess, it's annoying enough that we don't ride that trail as often as we'd like. To fix it once and for all, we're going to be rock armoring the base, and then creating a turnpike to get us through the low points while also elevating...

Our Backyard Trail Is Finally Finished! Building the Last Segment - Route 301 Ep. 9
มุมมอง 19Kปีที่แล้ว
We are building the last remaining segment of our backyard mountain bike trail. In the last video we cut down a large eastern hemlock, and in this video pick up by where we left by removing the stump that was left in its place. Once that is done, we could finally build a berm that connect the top and the bottom sections of the trail. I also wanted to account for future maintenance so we also ad...
Moving Logs Out Of the Woods To Have Them Milled - Route 301 Ep 8
มุมมอง 5Kปีที่แล้ว
Before we tackle the last building project on Route 301, we need to remove a partially dead hemlock. I normally avoid taking down big trees, however the hemlock lost its top, and judging by the few remaining branches isn't doing too healthy. Once we take it down, and remove the stump, that will give us space to build the last part of route 301. Ep. 1 - The Start of the Trail Build th-cam.com/vi...

It appears you’ve been using the mini excavator with the tracks pulled in to their narrowest configuration. You should always run the machine with them extended out to their widest configuration, except when traveling through a narrow access point.
Very nice video i love it that it is that long but why 1:23:54 and not clean like1:23:45
Haha i never noticed that. That would have been really funny, and is definitely a missed opportunity on my part!
how much land do you have?
Great work as always you guys!! Love it! BTW - That white Grub you found looks very much like a Witchetty Grub however these are native to us here in Australia. A quick search revealed some thing VERY similar as noted by the University of Vermont: www.uvm.edu/~entlab/Landscape%20IPM/WhiteGrubManagementFactsheetAugust2018Final.pdf
Gheez Phil, how could you fell a tree without shouting TIMBER? Alot of hard work making something like this possible. Props to your work ethic. I bet itll be a sweet place to ride!
catching up with some vids. love how you guy just get on with stuff rain sleet or snow
Badass !!! Love to ride it someday 🤙🏻
I always leave my equipment on 🐢
My track fell off, how do you release tension on these, there is no grease fitting for this model?
There's a big threaded bolt with a square head on the end. If you are lucky and it is not seized, you'll need a big socket (maybe one inch or 1.5inch I can't remember), a socket extender (maybe 4inch) and breaker bar. I can't remember why, but i had to use the socket extension to get to the bolt head, i think there was some clearance issues. I had to thread the socket extension through a hole or something. But my track bolt was seized so i used a one of those blue propane torches to head up the bolt for like 5-10 minutes to get and had to put and extension on the breaker bar to get the bolt loose. Sounded like i broke something when it finally came loose.
Sorry commented from my other account
Absolutely love this and seeing you have made it adaptive accessible is a big thing. Have been a while since I have caught up on your efforts. Super congratulations on completing the build, such a big commitment. A big hello from Australia.
Croc's rock no matter what.
RANDOM: If I didn't know your channel name, I would dub you "Espresso Martin" 😆 I don't know why.
Sir, that is not "making a mess", rather, it is sculpting haha! And cute lil ring-neck snek. :)
So happy to support! The bridge looks awesome! 💚🥾
Who’s woods do they belong to do they belong to you.?
Not my land, but I had permission to build there.
WOW, what a beatiful Trail and even more impressionable the WORK you put into it, if I'll ever get the chance to ride it, i'd be stoked and even more, if I could help building! Thanks for sharing it here
Thats my birthday the day it opens
Great job. Also great seeing you shredding Thunder Mtn the other day.
Awesome work guys!
you are so lucky you have that excavator, we are building all whit hand🥵
hi. Great looking toy, please wear safety gloves and googles
I looks very nice good work💪
that grub/worm looks like a june bug larvae.
I’m making a little trail at woods near mine 😊
Can you do full trail POV at trail speed please
I did? It's the last part of the video.
Is this sort of your day job at the moment?
Maybe in the future. My main job is my other TH-cam channel (see Skills with phil), but I'm branching out and exploring other things. I find more purpose in trail building than i do pure content creation.
magnificent 😲
Haley is a legend, it’s been an interesting build to watch. Your machine skills have certainly risen to another level. Nice job 👍
Appreciated the reroute this week!
Glad to hear it!
Amazing work, cant wait to check this out.
Amazing work Phil and crew!
42:35 I find those constantly where I build trail - literally hundreds. Wood grubs! Larvae of all kinds of other beetles and stuffs. Make a good snack for bears, birds, and other critters.
I've always said perry hill needs another down trail on the easy lower trail side that goes all the way down to the underpass without using the up trail... Just saying... Haha would love to see you build more trails at places I love though. Great job man!
Good lord, Phil and Haley. I just got to spend an hour thinking about what a lazy piece of s*** I am. That was so much back-breaking work! Congrats to you two! That trail looks incredible…drippy Skid Marks!
WAIT A SECOND HAILEY WHAT IS THAT SHIRT?!?!?!? also, ill let you jump over me Phil :D
tbh i looked a bit like Greg on that last steep corner too!
oh dang! i was wondering what shoes Hailey had one, off the check out Oboz!
the snowfall timelapse was dope
great build Phil!
AND HAILEY!!!
Yup. Riding Skid Marks would give me... Well, you get it!
7:58 cute ring-necked snake! 42:47 that's maybe a stag beetle larva.. That's delicious🤤 😆
Definitely a Beetle of some sort, I think they are invasive from the research I did. You're not the first person to say something about them being yummy, somebody else said they taste like peanut butter haha.
@@PhilsWorld you're right, Phil. In our part of the world they're the reason some palm and coconut trees rot from the inside. As a retaliation we harvest the larvae. Delicious both raw and cooked. Hahaha! It's better cooked, just grill them, use some bbq sticks. 😆
Xin chào bạn cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẻ video này chúc bạn thành công và sức khỏe ❤❤
Making this trail was a huge commitment and I'm glad y'all had the chance to do it! Thanks for making more adaptive trails, everyone deserves to ride bikes and have fun! <3
The Gregg chase footage is so rad!! Main Channel vid with that eh?
He's super talented. They have a demo adaptive bike that I want to take out for a ride and try our trails at some point to get some perspective as to how it feels.
Maybe because you are a great rider, but man you are a masterful trail builder.
I do think there's something to that. I can generally feel how something will ride before building it andHailey will often spot lines I miss. While she might not be able to hit them herself, she's been around me and other skilled riders to know what goes what doesn't.
Great trailing building!
Thank you!
Great work you two! Thank you for all your efforts
So…. Heavy duty skid marks? Hahah love it.
Or is it heavy doodie? 🤔
Gotta say, seeing you and haley work together so well gives me warm fuzzies. Serious relationship goals going on in this video.
So sick great work!
