Intriguing Fantasy Standalones for 2023 and Beyond
aw man, I didn't see this when it went live. I'll watch on replay now!
Thanks Brian! Hope you’re doing well sir!
Sorry I i missed it! Got my diamond edition recently, it's gorgeous
It absolutely is! No worries my friend!
I can’t believe Scott returned AND I MISSED IT!!! Oh well I’ll catch this on team replay!!
I appreciate it!
@@BaldBookTuberAnd one thing I need to say Scott is thanks so much for doing those videos on Book of the New Sun with Ruocchio. Those SERIOUSLY helped when I read through the series, and it’s not a favorite of all time! Sooooo, yeah thanks so much for posting those!
@iSamwise You’re welcome - it was a great honor to have him on and he helped my enjoyment of the series considerably as well!
Yeah the font size was an issue that was hard for me to catch on the screen. Lesson learned. Will be fixed going forward.
Thanks for watching good sir! Can’t wait to read the new stories and updated verbiage.
Great talks! In regards to the Jonas part. I believe the soilder was the guy Jonas had to take parts of his body. Sevarian had resurrected him while Jonas was apart of his body. Jonas had left from the mirrors and came back somehow to find the one girl that died. Thats why Sevarian was saying the soilder was two people.
I only noticed on the last rereading that Wolfe's horse/destrier language game is even deeper. Repeatedly and especially in Citadel, he refers to destriers as having "hoofs". Previously I thought that just a mistake in the crappy paperback edition I had, like many other I'd noticed. But the mistake is repeated exactly. Then it hit me - just as Tolkien intentionally used "dwarves" to separate those beings from humans with dwarfism, so Wolfe uses "hoofs" to separate a destrier's clawed extremities from those of present-day horses. But little Severian's "wolfs" is just a child's mistake ... right?
Excellent series of talks. Would love to hear you guys talk about Urth of the New Sun.
I must have missed this detail, but how exactly does Agia know about Thecla?
I guess he said too much to her while they were on their way to get that plant. idk 😅
After Barnoch is brought out, Severian sees Agaia in the crowd. He then finds the Green Man in the tent and is informed that men are seeking to free Barnoch. (They are Vodalus's henchmen) It's safe to assume Agaia and Vodalus's men cross paths in their converging searches of Barnoch and Severian. They exchanged stories and formed a plot. (I think)
gotta say book 3 is my favorite
Wow I thought he read for Brandon Sanderson I heard somewhere that Christopher is planning to do something like the cosmere multiple series’s in the same universe is that true because it would be awesome
@@mix-jk3ys I’m not sure what you mean about reading for Sanderson. As to the question, after he finishes and publishes book 7, he has talked about writing other works within the Sun Eater universe, but no concrete plans yet.
@BaldBookTuber sounds amazing. Will they be their own series with their individuality with long serieses like the cosmere long serieses in the same universe without interacting with each other or will it be something like knight of the seven kingdom from asoiaf dunken a knight from westros with interacting with the main lore and world of asoiaf honestly i will eat anything he writes but i wish for the series to be it's own thing
@@mix-jk3ys I’m not sure even CR knows 100% at this point what the next book/series will be. Stay tuned and be sure you are subscribed to his channel and newsletter for updates.
@@BaldBookTuber already did 🔥🔥🔥
Susan Ross nearly killed the Bubble Boy!
Did you find Malazan to be hard to follow on audiobook? I have the first five on audio but a ton of people have not recommended listening saying that it’s harder to follow on audio… I figured I should ask an expert.
I’m about as far from a Malazan expert as there is, but I appreciate the question. I really do enjoy the audio for the series, especially Lister for the first three books, but I’m also a huge Michael Page fan. I did the whole series immersively - it’s just the best reading experience for me personally to read and audio simultaneously using the kindle and audio versions together. I think I could probably reread on audio fairly well, but doing a straight audio of the series as a first time read is likely beyond my personal capacity. Hope you love it!
Mention of both T.A.Barron’s Lost years of Merlin, and one of my favorites Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun. So good.
You good, mate?
I’m ok, just been busy with life. I’ll be meeting my favorite author of all time Robin Hobb next weekend, so hopefully will post some stuff about that. I appreciate you checking in.
Great convo! I plan to read many on his list now.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Scot, I just restarted Empire of Silence (kind of on the back-burner for now because I'm also reading Fool's Fate) but whats the reading order for Sun Eater? I hear contradictory things and when and where novellas and Short Stories come into it
Hey sir! Super happy to hear this, as obviously Hobb is my all-time favorite author and CR is comfortably in my top 5. He and his wife maintain a website, and FAQ’s (including reading order) can be found here: www.sollanempire.com/faqs
Scott have you seen the cover art for Fury of the Gods!!! Out 10/23/24!! The scale is way off though!😀
Hey Heidi! Been a bit MIA, so sorry for the late reply, but it looks awesome! I can’t wait to read it!
Gratest youtube video?
I remember this live stream like it was yesterday.
Thanks for watching sir. 😂
Great, Did any one catch all the names on the list? would be great to have it writen down. if any one does, please post :) Thanks
Happy birthday Scot!
Appreciate it sir!
Sorry I missed the live. Happy birthday Scot!!! ❤
All good Chadia! Thanks for dropping in - I hope you’re doing well!
Currently listening to the Simon Vance narration of Robinson Crusoe, it's been a pretty good immersive read
That sounds awesome. I’ll have to check it out sometime.
Happy birthday! Had to miss the stream for kid stuff but will be listening later
Thanks sir! Appreciate you!
Happy Birthday Scott! Sorry I missed the stream, but planning to listen during work tomorrow :)
Thanks sir! Appreciate you checking it out!
I read ‘Hunt for Red October’ and ‘Patriot Games’ last year…hope to make it through all the Jack Ryan books eventually. Enjoy!
Nice! I’m looking forward to it. Thanks for watching!
This was great, love hearing Christopher's take on things
It was a great conversation. Thanks for watching!
Tolkien, Catholic, Gene Wolfe, Catholic, Lovecraft, Catholic, Robert E Howard, Catholic, Sapkovsky, Catholic...I sense a pattern here...
If any of those things are dealbreakers for you, I’ll understand if my channel isn’t for you.
I am catholic myself, but I don't let that color my taste in fantasy is all I'm saying.
I can’t find any evidence of Howard, Lovecraft, and Sapkowski being Catholic……. Also Scott, based on your response I’m curious, are you a person of faith yourself?
@samm8190 I am, but it’s personal to me and I don’t really talk about it. My response was based perhaps on a misunderstanding of the original poster’s point; I was saying if they consider the list invalid because of the religious beliefs of Christopher and/or this collection of authors, that type of close-minded thinking is gonna be tough for me to get on board with.
My Dude, Mad Ship is good! I'm 250 pages from the end! I don't want to put it down!
I love that book so much, and I’m one of the folks that loves Ship of Destiny even more!
@@BaldBookTuber Just finished Mad Ship! That was wild! When Wintrow freed She Who Remembers, did he develop the Wit or something?
@thatsci-firogue All will be revealed - my understanding is that it isn’t specifically the Wit, but I always have to go to Derry with these questions. :)
@@BaldBookTuber I can't wait to get to Ship of Destiny, but right now I want to finish Boy's Life and Lonesome Dove first. I want to prevent burnout as much as I possibly can.
Boy’s Life rules - one of my favorite books ever. Need to get to Lonesome Dove.
Some fantastic women narrators, Josephine Bailey for Boudica : Dreaming the Eagle, Tara Rodrigues for Daughter of the Empire and Ruth Urquhart for Daggerspell!!
Thanks for watching and for the recs Heidi!
An interesting question just popped into my head. Could bòok of the new sun be adapted? Could it be done well? What would that even look like?
I suppose anything *could* be adapted, but I think BotNS would be especially hard to do well.
I can't really think of one that would be harder to do, But I'll be damned if I don't want to see them try.
Daughter’s War is being released at the end of June, the prequel to the Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman! If you have not read it, get the audio!! He is my new favorite author! I also loved Between the Fires and the Lesser Dead!
Thanks for the rec! I’ve heard good things!
It's the best book I've ever read.
Awesome! Thanks so much for checking out my review!
Scott just subbed!! Anyone who loves the Bloodsworn is fantastic in my book!
Thanks Heidi! Great to have you, and always great to welcome subscribers with excellent taste!
Sorry my battery died 😅 I'll probably be spamming your comments section with McCammon and Hobb takes over the coming weeks and months.
I hope so! Thanks so much for dropping by good sir!
Cahill’s The Bound and the Broken series is very good, although the first written (Of Blood and Fire) is definitely weak. Keep going.
Looking forward to getting to it. Thanks Laura!
Hey man. Forgot about this so just woke up.
All good dude - hope to see you on the next one!
Hey bro Happy New year
And to you and yours! Thanks for watching!
The Book of the New Sun is great, but I prefer to read the Book of the Long Sun. I find the main character to be more interesting.
Hadn’t responded yet, but looking forward to both Short and Long Sun.
These were great to watch! I actually liked hearing you guys discuss these books more than actually reading them haha
Ha! Thanks for watching!
Thank you SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS!!!!!!!!!! These are so great and so helpful!!! Did you do Urth of the New Sun?
You’re very welcome. I plan to read Urth soon, though with Christopher busy writing book 7 of Sun Eater, I’m not sure we’ll be able to get a talk going.
Happy you liked Mystery Walk, it's really underrated!
Thanks for the rec my guy, and thanks for watching!
Christopher Ruocchio's heartfelt defence of Tolkien and LotR made him rise even more in my eyes. I whole-heartedly agree. Silmarillion is my #1 book of all time.
Agreed. The Silmarillion is probably my favorite work of fantasy literature.
Hells yeah man!!! His defense of Tolkien is second to none!! He’s so good!!!!
Ooof. No malazan.
I enjoyed my time through Malazan. I just happen to love other series more. Thanks for watching!
I feel like you two could really love Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow. Overall and especially in terms of sophisticated and beautiful prose, thematic depth and worldbuilding, it's in the upper echelon of Fantasy. Janny Wurts deserves a lot more credit and attention.
Hey Marc - thanks for the watch and detailed comment. I did actually try to get into L&S back in ‘22 and got about 250 pages into Mistwraith before putting it down. I do want to get back into it at some point, but lack of audio was really hurting my experience, as I love to immersively read such big series.
Yeah, that's sad, but the series needs more hype in order to get audio books. I hope you get back into it in spite of that. I recently finished book 10 and am now waiting on the final novel. She makes you work, though, and face yourself relentlessly. But I love it and find it immensely rewarding!
Hobb is elite. Great list!
The next chat can’t come soon enough!
Awesome top. 😊 Subbed! 😊
Late replying, but welcome aboard!
