The Lap. My first attempt at this 47 mile circuit of Lake Windemere in The Lake District. It is described as 'low level' but it is not flat, there is over 2600m of ascent. This makes it challenging combined with some technical trails. It is a brilliantly organised event with great food, superb marking and encouraging friendly marshalls.

Great video. The sleeping bag is really great
It certainly is very good value. I find I get cold a few degrees below freezing but with that liner it was fine . 👍
@huntonthetrails i take it its unzipped like that for getting in/out and you zip it up when you get in
good tent
It is 😁
I must admit not sure I would not be using my Lanshan 2 pro supposed to be a 4 season. It has no inner tent really just a thicker 1 piece fly sheet I would certainly needs the 4 layer sleep system that you use plus the insulated base Looks toasty and pretty snug 👍
Well toasty might be pushing it ! If the weather was not settled I would not use the Lanshan 1 and go for my Vango F10. Heavier, but more comfortable. 👍
Really good weight is that mate and very inspiring 👍
Yes, the weight was good. However, if the weather was anything but settled, I would use my Vango tent which would add 2+kg to the weight .
Great info Andy, thanks for sharing this. It's very impressive that you've got your load down so light. As you know, I prefer an alcohol stove, I can always get it to light.
Yeah, the stove was not good enough at such low temperatures. I somewhere have an MSR whisperlite that i need to dig out. Heavier, but more reliable in the cold.
very interested in that alpkit bivvy bag...which one do you have? I often find the outside footbox of my DOWN quilt gets damp and I know it isn't from condensation drips. I've wondered whether it is just heat from my feet escaping the down and condensating on the outside of the footbox. Do you think a bivvy bag would get damp inside from condensation from a warm body ?? I have always wondered about this! I tried a covering my toe box with a sleeve made out of tyvek but it didn't make any difference...footbox still damp in the morning!
Hmmm not sure. When my sleeping bag has been damp at the bottom it has always been from condensation. I have used the bivvy bag several times now and never had a problem with the sleeping bag being damp. I do make sure before i get in the sleeping bag that I dry my feet ( have a mini towel ) and put on dry socks. I find this helps get my feet warmer more quickly and helps with any potential condensation.
Very informative. You could try a gas stove with a pre heater tube. I find they work very well. Alpkit and other companies do them. I sleep in my down jacket as I find bag liners a real pain. Down pants are also great. Keep the films coming 👍
Cheers Paul. I will check out the alternative stove although I do have an MSR whisperlite somewhere that I probably need to get back in action. 👍
Leaving kit. Know how you feel. At the start, I went through my packing realised left my pad at Red House bothy but had only done a mile so not a problem Good decision to come back amother day. Great videos and helpful as I hope to do the Cambrian Way this year.
Thanks David. Glad to know the videos are helping. Its a tough, but rewarding route. As it turned out, if I had not lost the tent and continued, the next week of weather was pretty wet and miserable. So, in hindsight maybe a good thing. Best of luck. 😁👍
I live in Saltaire and you're right: the Settle-Carlisle line is great for being able to get into the Dales for a few days, or even day hikes.
Yes, going to continue to use it. Beats taking the car. 😁
Absolutely beautiful film, thank you, Subbed.
Thank you. Really glad you enjoyed it. 😁
Nice! I love the winter season ❤
Yes, its a great time of the year if you get clear cold days. I love being in the hills on those type of days. 👍
Was it hard work 😂
Did I mention that ? 😁

Funnily enough my wife said the same thing. 👍
Fabulous 👍

Cheers Phil. Just subscribed to you too and will check out your St Cuthberts Cave video. I ran past it when I did the St Cuthberts Way Ultra, so will be interested to see it. 👍
Great video. Is that a sleeping bag in a bivvy bag or just a sleeping bag
Hi Craig. Thank you. Its a sleeping bag in a bivvy bag. I have another video out on Wednesday about the kit I took on this trip.👍
@huntonthetrails cool. Do you show the sleeping bag
Yes, I go through the sleep system I used. I've been trying to go lighter weight than in previous years. Not all successful !
@@huntonthetrails cool. Can i comment on the sleeping bag on this other video please? It wont be negative
Of course you can and say what you like about it ( I do ) ....all opinions count !
Great video Andy good to see the Lanshan out in the winter 👍
Thanks. Yes it did ok, but I wouldn't want to use it in winter in bad weather.
I’ve really enjoyed watching this series of walks on the Scottish National Trail - thanks for taking us with you. I’m keen to do this one day so thank you for the encouragement and motivation.
Thank you so much for commenting. I would strongly encourage you to do so. Its a marvellous trail through such a variety of landscapes that will always keep your interest. A great adventure 😁
I can feel your pain. My son and I walked from Langholm to Greensykes Bothy in the Borders and then from there to Craik the next day, a total of 25 miles. It was absolutely brutal. At some points we were up to the top of our thighs in snow. I have done the CWT and can honestly say that the walk in the snow was harder than any single day of the CWT. Well done!!
Certainly, deep snow makes it very hard going, but very enjoyable in such beautiful weather 👍
Well done, it’s hard going when the snow is like that, energy sapping! I walk that route regularly to practise for longer multi day hikes and it’s a good day walk however in snow it’s tough especially with a full pack.
It certainly was hard in places, but the weather was great and the area fabulous.
Your as tuff as old boots , well done ! Spectacular scenery , love the Dales .
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. I'm probably as wrinkly as an old boot too !
Well what a stunningly beautiful trip Andrew and I’m pleased that logistically it wasn’t possible for me to make it as I’m not sure I could have managed all that snow and extreme cold too. A lovely bit of old footage of Jocks road, never been but maybe this year. A beautiful and enjoyable video Tek care 👍
Cheers Dave. It was great to be out in the Dales in proper winter conditions, it doesn't happen very often these days. I'm sure you would have coped, just got to take your time. Although it was really cold, I prefer this to damp just above freezing conditions. Catch up with you soon. 👍
Beautiful Andy, cracking video mate! You bought a drone?
Cheers Phil. Had it a while ( hover air x1 ) but probably used it more on this trip as no wind !
@@huntonthetrails I thought it must be that, I couldnt see any other footprints around so I was sure you were on your own, but some of the shots just had to have some kind of gadgetry involved! Theyre amazing drones, so clever. I really enjoyed this video Andy, thanks.
@@PhilWaud Yes, although the batteries do not like the cold !
@@huntonthetrails Yeah, constant problem.I put my spare batteries in an seperate bag and they go in the sleeping bag with me. When Im walking, I keep them in my inside pocket. My drone has removable batteries so its a bit easier.
@@PhilWaud Same here, gopro and drone in inside pockets.
Great vid mate! ✌️
Cheers. Hope it was useful 👍
Cheers Mark. It ws certainly challenging ground, very reminicent of the far NW of Scotland. Rough bouldery terrain. I would like to have got some views, but on these trips you have to go with the flow and it could have been much worse ! All the best to you too for 2025. Look forward to seeing your adventures.
A top section there Andy - enjoyed every moment. A fair few choices during weather such as this but you made the right ones and cruised through it I reckon. One or two aches but all good. It's shame the views weren't about but maybe you'll return. All the best for 2025. Mark
Cheers Mark. The ground was pretty challenging. Its rough bouldery terrain. It would have been great to get some views but, you have to take what you get on these backpacking trips. It could have been a lot worse ! Looking forward to your adventures in 2025.
@@huntonthetrails A pleasure, Andy. Yeah, challenging but you were cool with it. Views how or not Andy - as you say we'll take what comes. 2025 - I hope yo be back out on trails. Peace.
Is this the 3 or 4 season inner… which would you suggest
I used the 3 season inner. Worked fine for me. I pitched the tent with the rear facing the wind so rarely got any wind blowing through the inner. For summer the mesh also m adeit feel more airy and less confined.
great video! what hydration pack were you using? looks like you can fit a decent amount in it
Thank you. The pack was a Salomon active 8 which as it suggests has an 8 litre capacity. It's really comfortable.
Enjoyed the vlog, it’s great using the train to get some walks done in that area. I was out on Gragareth the same night another hill that no one walks up. I’ve walked and wild camped all around Mallerstang and Wild Boar Fell a few times and never see a soul, well that is until you get to the Nine Standards.
Glad you enjoyed it. Its the first time I have walked in this area (apart form Nine Standards on the coast to coast). As you say, the train stations give some great accessibility. I intend on exploring the area more.
Great video and amazing trail!
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍😁
What a great adventure Andrew, very inspiring. I’m afraid I thought of Homer Simpson when you mentioned Judith asking what went through your mind, so I’ll leave you a link for a laugh. Yes pretty exsposed the tops of those hills. I’ve never walked Malerstang way , maybe one day. Yes you certainly have to think about setting up camp early. Oh nice one. I hope the video reminded you of the rain and mud 😁
@ it did same again next September for me 😅
Me too ! See you there....
I’ve said for years mate that leave all the popular walks to the puddle jumper’s and I always go for the obscure unheard of ones. Great video mate 👍
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, so many honeypot areas but even more off the beaten track where you can find solitude and peace.
I simply love walking in the area in which you have passed through. As you talked about the train passengers not looking out, it reminded me of my Dales High Way journey that I did with my friend Alan a couple of years ago. We camped high on the moor between Ribblehead and Dent and looked down on magnificent Dentdale and watched the trains (that from our position looked like toy trains) as they worked their way through the landscape. Thanks for sharing this adventure.
Cheers Dave. It's an area that I think I have underappreciated over the years and only recently have started to explore more. In fact, I had never been to Dentdale until I did the Fellsman ultramarathon in April. I do intend on going back and making use of the station stops on the railway to plan more trips.
That’s a nice walk , I would also have looked out the train window , that iconic line nearly closed in the early 80s - thank you Mr Portillo
I do remember its threatened closure. The station stops give great access to many places which I intend on using more. Thank goodness it is still here.
Thats a lovely part of the world Andy, camped in Dent quite a few times but not done much wilding over there - I must give it a try!. Thanks for sharing!
You must. It would be easy to do a walk linking the stations with some great wild areas between them. It's great backpacking country as well, as the ascents and descents are generally quite gentle.
@@huntonthetrails Tracy and I have actually done that Andy, train to Dent, walked along to the village and stayed at Condor Farm campsite, then walked to Ribblehead via Whernside, only just making the last train home for school in the morning! I really must try it again, like you say there are lots of options. Thanks!
Yes Garside station also looks in a great spot. The mountain marathon I mentioned in this video I did with Chris Jones about 15 years ago. I remember the overnight camp was near Garside station and I thought at the time it was a lovely valley.
So nice upload, awesome presentation, thanks for sharing dear. All the best to you. Have a wonderful day and see you next time again. Many Greetings from Germany. ♥ Like 60

Any advice on getting ready to do the walk? Considering doing it in April/May next year, just concerned about the physical toll it is going to take.
Hi. It is a tough walk if you are considering doing it all in one go. I summed it up at the time in Part 11 at the end. It is the hardest trail I have done and I have done a few. There are not many easy days. You could break it into smaller stages and take more time, but even then its going to be hard. It will be easier if the weather is good and April/May sounds like a good time to be doing it. Fell free to ask me more questions if any come to you and good luck. 😁👍
In general, this tent is great. Even able to fit myself and my 20 kg dog quite comfortably (backpack in the vestibule). The major problem I have with this tent is that when wet, the tent material stretches quite a bit and starts touching the head or feet part of the sleeping bag. Still, the balance of the weight, quality, and price makes this tent great. Also, it might be really annoying to pitch it at the end of the hard hiking day, when you're exhausted. These are probably two reasons why I even think about changing this tent to something else. But I'm not sure if any other small and lightweight tent like this is able to fit my large sleeping pad (193x64x7cm) as easily.
I am not sure. You get lots of space for the weight, maybe a Lanshan 2....its 300g heavier but loads of room and slightly easier to pitch. Same quality materials. I did get quite good at pitching this tent by the end ( about 5 mins ) but getting the tension right on uneven ground can be tricky. I do take your point about it stretching, its why getting the pitch right is important.👍
I share your concerns! I'm off bikepacking in Wales again in June, last year I used my Phoxx 2 which was great, but pack size and weight ain't ideal! It will be my first time using my Lanshan 1, I've made a few mods and can pitch it quite well. But ideal pitches where I'm going are almost impossible to find! My Phoxx 2 is quite forgiving, the Lanshan isn't! This has led me to think about the Vango helium UL2 as a better option, have you entertained that idea?
@@mokotramp I had a vango f10 xenon prior to my lanshan2. I think the materials on the Lanshan are better ( poles bent and seam split on vango tent ). With the Vango you get the advantage of a freestanding tent which will pitch easier on rough ground. For me though, the weight and materials of the lanshan 1 outweigh this for backpacking in 3 seasons.
Like multiple other commenters, I too have the Lanshan 2 and I love the thing. In fact, I slept in it two nights ago. There have been times when I've had to deal with condensation and others not. I have found that when weather permits, if I leave one vestibule door open I have no condensation issues at all. I've also had my Lanshan 2 out in some pretty good wind and rain and have done no seam sealing on it and have not had the first drop of water come through and had no issues with the tent withstanding the wind either. Setting the tent up in a wind storm is something I have yet to experience, but I have seen a video where a young lady did it in gale force winds. I don't think she was having the most fun. Thanks for the review, I think there's a good chance I will invest in the Lanshan 1 in the future. I think the quality for price will make it inevitable. The Lanshan 2, and the 3F UL Gear YUE 45+10 ultra-lite backpack (I've only found it on their website) I have from them have me sold on their quality, the price only makes it all the better. Thanks, I enjoyed the review.
Cheers. I agree with what you say. You cannot argue with the quality of these tents, particularly for the price. Any issues tend to be due to the design, but because of that design you are getting a lightweight backpacking tent. I'm still to see anything better without spending a serious anount of money.
I used the Lanshan 1 and found it too small and cramped I moved on to the Lanshan 2 Pro and it was like a palace and only a little bit heavier Not struggling for space
Thats interesting. Agreed, the Lanshan 2 is palacial for 1 person. Its roomy enough for 2 people. I was surprised how good I found the living space in the Lanshan 1 on this trip. Sure its compact, but that brought its advantages. There were 2 pitches I used which would have been too small for a Lanshan 2. Both great tents though. 😁
There are two versions of the Lanshan 1. The older was much smaller than the newer, which is 230 cm long. Was is the newer one you tried?
@@archi-mendel That is a good question. I bought it 1 year ago, so not sure if it was the newer one. Just thinking about my xtherm pad. Its 183cm long and it certainly did not take up the length of the inner. So mybe 230 is about right.
@huntonthetrails probably the newer one. My is like 3 years and it's long.
If you only went hiking solo and could only have one tent, which would you choose the lanshan 1 or the 2 ?
The 1. Lighter, smaller footprint, just as robust and enough room. Both great tents though. 👍
I have the lanshan 2 myself and like yourself I rate it, tried the pro and lasted one night lol. Been toying with the idea of getting the 1 for a while now and you’ve just helped me out so thanks for your reply.
Lanshan 2 Pro Slightly heavier but so much more room Also very sturdy in bad weather
I just prefer the 2 skin tents, especially when condensation is bad. But, we each have our own preferences which I gues is why these different tent options are available.
I think the 3fulgear stuff is brill Andy, absolutely agree with you re materials and I've always found the craftsmanship is great. Good review and some good points. Thanks for sharing.
Let me answer your question: 3fulgear is different from other Chinese tent factories. It only produces its own styles and does not design and produce other styles for other brands. Therefore, the employees are highly skilled and the workmanship of the products is guaranteed. Other Chinese tent factories have to produce many styles of tents for many brands, which is not a good thing for the workers. Then it is impossible for them to be better than 3fulgear in sewing details.
@@camperlists7090 I didnt ask a question and Im not sure what you mean. 3FUL gear (and Flames Creed which they also produce) in my experience use top quality materials (in terms of their specification and performance) and are manufactured to a high standard.
100% agree. I did two 500 mile backpacking trips with my Lanshan 2 and it was fantastic. They have to be pitched under tension and all the seams / attachment points / zips hold up brilliantly.
@@PhilWaud As their distributor, I visit their factory once a year.
@@camperlists7090 Ah, now I have some context! I love the 3FULgear stuff, Ive a Lanshan, a Quidian Pro, a Minaret and Ive just ordered a Tyvek bivvy. Oh, and Ive also got some of the six inch carbon fibre stakes. Its great kit.
I love(ed) my Lanshan 1, until... A cow took a liking to it and trashed the fly leaving it with two very large tears 😭
Bombproof but not cowproof ! I have to say I always get very nervous when t here are cows around and definitely try to avoid camping near them. The are too curious and big units. 😁
T'riffic 😊. 🫡🇬🇧🤲👏🙏
Cheers Fraser 👍
Awesome weekend, this was my mate and mines first OMM...it was tough (especially for a 51 and 58 year olds) but highly enjoyable event. Congratulations on your 20th OMM 👍🏻
Cheers. I remember my first OMM. Unlike anything I had ever done before. We were hopelessly over time on the first day. Glad you enjoyed it, it is a unique event ( and the weather can be so much worse ! )
Did it clockwise in 2022 and have an overwhelming feeling i need to do it anticlockwise 😮
Hey , why not ? The only problem is you will know the tough bits that are still to come. 😁😁
