Charlie Chaplin Collector
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Years ago, I was an avid Charlie Chaplin enthusiast. And, a vicious collector of Charlie Chaplin memorabilia. This video is from that period in my life. Shot on location in Golden Gate Park San Fransisco as most of Charlie Chaplin's "'In the Park" was filmed. We used a Sony DCRVX2000 MiniDV Digital Camcorder for the 2004 portion. And, any silent movie enthusiast knows what Chaplin used in early...

Portals of the Past - Chaplin Film Locations Then & Now (c) 2004
มุมมอง 13K10 ปีที่แล้ว
"Portals of the Past" is the sequel to my 2002 adventure, "Mabel's Strange Weekend". On January 4, 2004, Gerald Smith, a Charlie Chaplin enthusiast, visits Jack Totheroh, son of Charlie Chaplin's cameraman. Their shared interest in Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance and their time result in a fascinating tale of coincidence, timing and time travel. A must see for anyone fascinated with time travel...

Charlie Chaplin - Essanay Chicago Studio (c) 2001
มุมมอง 12K12 ปีที่แล้ว
In early 2001, I followed Charlie Chaplin's footsteps as he left Keystone for Essanay. From Keystone Studio to Essanay Studio Niles. Then to Chicago Essanay Studio. Lots of locations shot during train rides and stops. This is my favorite; Chicago Essanay Studio tour with fellow Chaplin enthusiasts Rick and Jodie.

In 1999, I had the pleasure of spending a few days in London walking the streets of Charlie Chaplin's youth. Nothing fancy, just me with my first DV Cam, Frank Scheide (University of Arkansas professor and Chaplin historian) and Tony Merrick (local Lambeth boy with ties to Chaplin).

I live in Uptown. I never knew Charlie worked in Chicago. I thought he went straight out to California after he was hired by Max Sennett. This is cool. It was a different Chicago then.

Thanks for this. I moved from Chicago six months ago and never hunted this down during the twenty years I lived there, despite being a huge Chaplin fan. Well, now I have a reason to go back.

It kind of makes me sad to see this. The old Hartland Jr. High is no longer a town property and the original town hall has been vacated and is up for sale. It's nice to have a video like this for preservation of memories.

A good little film, but what is the punch line? Are you saying that Mabel Normand was a little disgruntled about Charlie not making her his leading lady? She was the obvious choice, especially as Mabel wanted to shake off the control of her Svengali, Mack Sennett. Perhaps you mean that Mabel and Charlie had an affair in San Francisco, but that the dishonourable Charlie then signed Edna and ditched Mabel. A Mabelescent affair would have been dangerous for Chas as the 'madcap' was being tailed by Sennett's private 'dicks'. Unfortunately Mabel would have been too expensive for Charlie, and a cheap unknown, like, Edna, would have better suited his purposes (Mabel was also unreliable, irreverent and, by 1915, very sick - Chaplin stated Mabel had contracted TB in 1914). Chas said much about Edna in his autobiog, but little about what was said, or done, in the long hours he spent in the Queen of Keystone's dressing room - eficianado's of Mabel would truly like to know this. I conclude with this proclamation Mabel made everytime she saw Charlie in a public place 'Charlie I WILL be your leading lady - one day!'

Yes, these are believed to be the original locations. A lot of research has been done on the filming of Charlie Chaplin films in Niles, California (now a district of Fremont, California). The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum gives walking tours of filming locations in the town. Much of the 'downtown' of Niles has not changed in 100 years. The Villain in this video is played by the museum's researcher & historian David Kiehn.
