Cargo bike eye candy. Showing off a sparkling pink Velo-Lab cargo bike
In March 2024, Thomas from Bike packing Belgium organised a lightweight cargo bike (packing) festival. One of the speakers was Jap Kai Kellner of Velo-Lab. I took the opportunity to interview him about three cargo bikes he brought to Antwerp for the occasion.
I had a small problem with the sound while making this video. In the beginning of the video, the sound runs a bit out of sync, but it gets better as the video progresses.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Always nice to hear that the videos I make are liked. At this moment I'm freelancing for a bicycle company and don't have the time to make new videos. I don't get any earnings for making these videos so I have to do other work to earn a living :-).     As a bike lover considering a cargo bike (the high price and logistics of storing it are preventing me from getting one) we have to also admit that because of their price, the cargo bike lifestyle is somewhat reserved to privileged people (I include myself here). Most people without this privilege are really not deciding whether rysy want to be "cargo bike cool mama" or "soccer SUV mama", and are sadly stuck with being "subway mama", especially in cities like NYC

      And then there are the issues of maneuverability around tight corners, the fact that it barely fits in narrow bike lanes so it is actually a light scooter with added bonus of crashing into opening parking car doors, and the safety of such cargo scooter (kids in front?!). Never adopt a new trend. You know the concept is ripe when prices go down. I speak from experience - I own another Dutch concept - a short wheelbase high racer recumbent bike (Challenge Seiran), which I dust regularly.

      @@kottelkannim4919 kids in front in a bucket is safer if you crash (especially if you fall by yourself which is more common than crashing against a car) is safer than kids in the back on a traditional bike seat for kids.

    Prima concept met de verwisselbare powerpack. Hiermee wordt bij diefstal slechts de helft van de waarde gestolen als je deze meeneemt. Bovendien kun je twee fietsen kopen en één powerpack als je op twee verschillende locaties een fiets hebt. Minder risico en minder kosten. In alles zie je dat er goed is nagedacht over deze fiets. En het is overigens prettig dat er een normaal rustig persoon deze review doet. Ik wordt altijd een beetje nerveus van opgewonden standjes van Bright.

    Interesting video. I had never heard of this company before. Thank you for posting the video. I currently have 2 Bullitts for everyday commuting with my dog (20kg Border Collie). One is an electric (STEPS motor) and the other is a manual (triple front chainring and 10-speed rear cassette. I much prefer using the manual Bullitt because I have better control with the gears (smaller % jumps between gears). I was thinking of getting an Omnium mini-max as an extra cargo-bike, but now I see this brand. Are there any any major differences between the frame geometrys on this Ten:07 and on Omnium frames? . As was briefly mentioned in this video, the cargo-platform on the Ten:07 (and the Omnium) is higher than on a Bullitt, and thus a Bullitt is more stable, especially when carrying a load that moves around (a dog). See the following link to a short video of me and my dog on part of a 160km ride through the mountains near Dublin. It turns out that the longer wheel-base of cargo-bikes, and their heavy weight, makes them ideal for fast down-hill decents. Much quicker than road-bikes. Due to the higher cargo platform, I could not have been as fast on the decents with an Omnium (or Ten:07) as I can be with a Bullitt. th-cam.com/video/8Ai0cFMS-sI/w-d-xo.html

    If you wanna know how it works the other way around, check mine. I tried to adapt my former messenger Bullitt to be as flexible as possible, and outfitted it with a huge custombuilt multifunctional box, capable if handling my 2 kids (8 amd 11), or 120+ kg of tools and hardware. At the same time, I can adjust the steeringhouse and bidy position on my bike with just 2 levers, enabling a max. heigjt difference of over 35cm. Oh, and I used it for racing the Monstertriathlon last September.

    How does it compare with a bullitt? Eg weight, speed, handling etc?

      It feels more like a regular bike. This is because of the angel/ position of the steertube. It weighs about 16 kilos for a standard mechanical model.     Thanks for all the great videos, are all of Ittais bikes regulars as opposed to bullitt X? I assume they are regular but for some reason look long in the video.

      If you are living in an area where it's mainky flat the belt+ single speed is a good option. If you want to ride in an area where there are hills it's better to go for the derailleur option.

    Thank you for the review. Could you explain what happens with the bike experience when you cycle faster than 27 km/h? Does the support function stops?

      Hi Paul, the bike supports up to 25 km/h. If you want to go faster, you have to use your muscles :-) Even with the motor coupled to the rear axle, the resistance is still very small when the support is lost. So you can still ride very comfortably at a higher speed.

      Hi, No I did not have any problems with it. But if you wear trousers with wide legs, it is best to wear a bicycle clip

      Hi, I'm about 1.73m. The bike in the video is a size L. When you see me riding in the video the saddle is a bit to low for me. This was beceause I had a friend who assisted me that was a little smaller then I am and we didn't change the hight before filming. But with correct saddle hight the bike fits me very well.     Total permissible weight is unknown I guess, together with carbon fork, their message is clear for heavy riders like me. Which is "stay away, benno e-cargo is your thing". :) But, I'm going to ask them, to be sure. Update, asked on the site. "The maximum permissible load weight for the bike, rider, and luggage combined is 140 kg.". I'm out, from where I'm coming from those are bikes for infants, not full grown adults :) .

      LOL. Bike+battery=18 kg. That's not heavy. Permissable weight isn't stated but if indeed it's 140kg's that's still a bit better than it is for most bikes🤷‍♂

      @@esoteric5277 :) I'm not sure if "better...most" is going to help 125 kg (naked) rider on 18 kg bike with maximum permitted total weight of 140 kg (number they gave me via chat). I'm fine in Canada on my CroMo frame fixie. But I'm moving to Leige, Belgium and would prefer ebike which isn't too heavy.

    This looks very sleek. Bicycle design is one of my passions & I'm very interested to know why the (heavy) battery is placed so high on the frame. Ideally it should be lower down close to the crank. If they are spending all that time, resources & energy designing the frame to fit the battery, surely this would be possible, no? ...I've seen a similar product from india, by Dhruv Vidyut, that works in that way (albeit with throttle only 😐), but it includes the motor and it's made to fit on most of the common indian non-ebike frames. The Lemmo One definitely looks a lot lighter & has much nicer aesthetics.

      Hi, I tested the bike for several months with and without the Smartpack fitted. Frankly, I felt no difference in stability and handling of the bike. Regards, Helgi

      Hi, I'd also prefer a placement nearer to the crank but as it's still behind the front wheel hub I don't think it really makes a big difference. I'm not enthused by the textile covering but in any case the battery will pick up a lot less dirt sitting in this higher up forward position. Personally I would like to see a lock with a physical key on the battery, and not just because I'm not always carrying my phone🤷‍♂

    Thank you both! I was looking for bike like this in Belgium to have it as only vehicle for newcomer. Commuting, shopping and weekend rides around Liege, Namure and Tongeren.

    "AIrrails that comes form the car industry" Why should something for cars be named AIR-RAILS? And its Called Airline strips and its jut a fastening mechanism thats not apllied in a funktional way here^^.
