Fort Ritchie Maryland - Museum Dedication - Military Police Display
In early September 2024 members of the Fort Ritchie Military Police Company returned to dedicate a museum exhit at the Fort Ritchie History Museum.
In 1926 Camp Ritchie opened as a Maryland National Guard Training Facility and was initially guarded by a platoon sized element of the National Guard.
In the spring of 1955, the Fort Ritchie US Army Military Police and Security Company took over duties from the National Guard.
In September of 1964 the unit was redesignated as the 572nd Military Police Company. The unit was authorized a complement of 132 enlisted and five officers.
In 1978 the unit authorization increased to 169 enlisted and eight officers.
In 1982 the unit had become so depleted that a mandatory 24 month stabilized tour of duty was initiated.
In October of 1994, the unit was redesignated as the Fort Ritchie Military Police Company assigned to the Military District of Washington.
In October of 1998, the unit was redesignated as the United States Army Security Force Fort Detrick, Maryland and moved operations to Fort Detrick.
In February of 2002 the unit was returned to the Military District of Washington.
In 2006 United States Army Security Force Fort Detrick, Maryland was deactivated and all security duties at the Raven Rock Complex were turned over to the Department of Defense Police.
Special Thanks to the following for their making this dedication happen.
• John Krumpotich - property owner
• Katy Self - museum director
• Eric Franz - unit member
• Michael Proper - unit member
• Charles Delzer - unit member
• Drew Lousch - video
• Landen Grove - former museum director
There is something unique about having served at Fort Ritchiethat even Vietnam Vets, lifers and one enlistment soldiers agree on. Fort Ritchie not only sits in the beautiful Appalachian Mountain Chain, but it also mimics the beauty it is surrounded by.
Soldiers serving in the Fort Ritchie MP unit have gone on to be State Senators and Congressmen, Elected Sheriffs, Chiefs of Police, CEOs, CFOs and great members of the communities they come from.
As a group, we’ve hosted half a dozen reunions with over 100 different individuals attending throughout the years.

Fort Ritchie in Cascade, Maryland was a military installation with a deep history supporting the US war efforts of WWII and the Cold War. Following the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, it closed in 1998. In September of 2023, I spent a day photographing the current condition of the base using my DJI drone and cameras. The new ownership has really worked hard to revitalize the base.

@brianboggs7455 - I see you were stationed at Fort Ritchie the same time I was. We probably crossed paths as I worked in the same string of buildings!

This is a great video to see. I was stationed at Fort Ritchie from Feb 1989 until October 1990. I lived in the HQ Barracks that were right across from the mess hall. I worked in the EHSC in the building right by the lake and down the street from the Officer's Club. Part of this building was also the "warehouse" What a great place to have been. I am pleased to see the base being "revitalized" as earlier videos showed a lot of decay. I do see the three brick barracks are gone. I would have loved to go back and see my old room! Even though they are gone, I would love to go back and see the base in person. Thanks for the video!

I was stationed at Ritchie my last nine months of active duty ending in June 1966. At the time, the post was mainly Signal Corp and provided the manpower for Site R. Strangely, I don't ever remember the mountain being referred to as Site R or Raven Rock; we just said we were going into the mountain. I was the only AI trained soldier on the post after my AI major was reassigned. He was replaced by the post MP commander who immediately informed me that I would be designing and giving command wide security orientations. Hundreds, maybe thousands of personnel came to those lectures. Because some personnel worked different shifts, I had to go into barracks and qualify some who were not able to attend in the auditorium. My job also included being a documents custodian. Back in those days, serious violation of the Military Code of Conduct would be an automatic loss of security clearance and possible discharge. The post also housed the archives for the Eisenhower Papers and I witnessed David and Mamie Eisenhower spending time there. Off duty was mainly spent in Waynesboro or Hagerstown, the latter being a college town with plenty of girls.

I was there 65-66. The only AI trained soldier on the post after my major was reassigned. I did security orientations and was a documents custodian. Back then, we never referred to the mountain as Site R. Just said we were going into the mountain.

Site C that sits atop Quirauk Mountain behind (slightly west) of Forth Ritchie is still an active DoD communications site. Just down the road to the east is Site R (Raven Rock - the so-called 'underground Pentagon' or the bunker for Washington, D.C. politicians) is still very much active in it's multiple intended uses. For those that don't know, there are still other active locations in the immediate region, but Fort Ritchie is certainly not one of them. Great video!
