Pre spring check
Umm, I hope you’re ready for spring! Just checking how they’ve come through winter…Plenty of flowers and trees popping, mild weather, and judging on these boxes, swarms will be happening very shortly!

Honey warming cabinet DIY
มุมมอง 2.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Raw unpasteurised honey (the good stuff!) crystallises eventually. To get rid of those crystals and make it runny again, you need to warm in up to 40 degrees, no higher as it starts to break down the goodness in it. So I’ve built myself a honey warning cabinet. The professional ones cost thousands… this was about $100 from Bunnings! Note- if your honey doesn’t crystallise, then it’s most likely...

Hot wax dipping
มุมมอง 3673 ปีที่แล้ว
Wax Dipping… it’s a process for protecting raw timber, or treating hive diseases (AFB, wax moth). Basically you dip your piece into a vat of wax at 150C for 10-15 minutes. The wood comes out pretty hot, and you have to paint it straight away otherwise the paint won’t stick to the waxed wood. The paint also dries very quickly due to the heat, so you can get 3 coats on straight away.
Oops! You know when you get that feeling...

Accidents happen to us all! I was doing winter pack down for a client and asked if he could move his hives to a safer height to work. Side note: this is exactly what happens when a tree falls. Poor bees, poor George. We’ve worked hard to bring these girls back to good health, he was nearly crying he was so upset. We went back a couple of hours later and found a queen in the grass, marked, so we...
Swarmboys Queens
มุมมอง 513 ปีที่แล้ว
A couple of weeks passed and it’s time to check for mated queens. It’s really late in the season, and his first go at raising Queens... fingers crossed for Swarmboy. ( a couple of weeks after this I went to combine the nucs, and found another 2 mated queens!)
Swarm Boy’s mating nucs
มุมมอง 543 ปีที่แล้ว
With the virgin Queens hatched, they need to go into mating nucs, so the nurse bees can feed them, and they can harden up and go on their mating flights. They are stocked with one frame of brood, preferably capped as they generate their own heat, and one frame of honey- with bees on the frames! We’ll come back in two weeks to check if they’re mated. FYI I build all my hives, including these mat...
Queens Are Hatching
มุมมอง 583 ปีที่แล้ว
The grafts that swarm boy did nearly 2 weeks ago are now ready to hatch. They’re a little early, which probably means at least one of them was an older larvae. However, queens can make a piping noise, which encourages the others to hatch, as they want to be the dominant one, and not be trapped in a cell, waiting to be killed. As such they can hatch earlier than full term. We had 9 cells go in, ...
Any Queens for Swarm Boy?
มุมมอง 723 ปีที่แล้ว
Time to check Swarm Boys grafting skills. It takes 16 days for a queen cell to hatch, from eggs. We are (hopefully) grafting on day 4 (1 day old larvae) so in 12 days from grafting, they should hatch. But if we grafted older larvae, then they’ll hatch earlier. Now, it takes 5 days for the bees to build and feed the cell, and cap it. That’s our cue to take them out of the hive and put them into ...
Swarm Boy’s grafting day
มุมมอง 963 ปีที่แล้ว
Will “Swarm Boy” had his first go at grafting today. I think we got the cell builder right, we had loads of royal jelly to prime the cups, and hopefully we did a good job grafting, and now it’s up to the bees to make the Queens. He gave me a hand all day, from 9-6, and I’m seriously impressed with this guy. I learnt as much from him as he did from me, and his work ethic is amazing! Always think...
Swarm Boys Swarm tendencies
มุมมอง 343 ปีที่แล้ว
Swarm Boy is coming in a few days to learn about breeding queens. Two days ago we made a box with just nurse bees, now it’s time to create the swarm! In 3 days time we should have some royal jelly to harvest for our grafting. There are 3 triggers to create queens. 1: Supercedure- when the current queen is no longer viable, ie damaged or slowing laying. The hive raises a new queen, it hatched an...
Swarm Boy’s queen rearing
มุมมอง 713 ปีที่แล้ว
A young bee keeper Will “Swarm Boy” has asked me to teach him how to breed queens. So he’s coming down on Saturdays for the next few weeks and we’ll go through each stage, and he can breed his own. But I needed to set up the cell builder first so I thought I’d film it so he can see the first step. Today is Monday, so it’s not really enough time to do it the Michael Palmer way, but we’ll make do...
Bee Space...
มุมมอง 633 ปีที่แล้ว
Bee space... smaller than 6mm gap and they fill the gap with propolis. Bigger than 9mm and the build comb. I left a frame out of my hive, and the bees built one for me to fill the gap! Beautiful!

How long does it take to go from fully crystalized to runny honey?

Thanks for showing me around your honey warming cabinet. However I have one question. How is this a DIY video? You don’t show us how you made it, how it regulates temperature etc.

Does the paint stick on well enough after its waxed? Oil based paint?

Yep, you live and learn! The point of posting was to show what’s goes wrong. Should’ve 1: put pallet on forks without hives on. 2: put hives on pallet. 3: STRAP HIVES TO PALLET!!
