How do you remove it in the first place?

It is easier to just remove the one nut on the door end of the rail, instead of the two bolts next to it, as you did. Remove the one nut (the bolt is welded/ won't come off), push the end of the rail off the bracket the rail is attached to, and slide the carriage off..

OK sports fans, remember this: You are replacing the carriage assembly because of broken, missing or sheared teeth in that assembly. Slipping one off and sliding the new one on is a piece of cake but keep in mind, a lot of the broken teeth are still in the screw drive and tucked along the rail. I removed the entire track assembly and the motor head also and I was amazed at all the broken bits still in the lube that stays wrapped around the main worm shaft. Cleaning this off is more work but if you don't, expect to change another carriage assembly in 6 months or so.

Do anyone know on this black cartridge how to get it unstuck or why it went back too far towards the motor? It ended up going past the white cut off lever and it's stuck now on that metal stopping strip to keep it from going into the motor.

Watched this video, got the part, removed the bad carriage, greased the new one, installed the new ($15 on eBay, fob my mailbox), and saved a $150-$200 service call. Works great, and no 'kachunk" had for years.! Going to grease the rail, so the carriage can glide. Discovered it's time to replace the old one when opening the door, the door stopped with a loud noise from the carriage, with the motor still running and grinding. The teeth had worn down and were stripped. With new one smooth operating. I enjoyed a beer while admiring my work. Three lessons: 1) the nut on the bolt attaching the bar with the bracket on the wall, should only be hand tight, per owner's installation manual, 2) the nuts on the 70+ hinge roller assembles need to be tightened, about 20 of them were loose, one was gone, 3) lube the carriage gear and the rail the carriage travels on, 'bout every year or two. Thank you lord for the guy who made this video for the older model,he just saved me $300 to replace an entire door,shady ass contractor saying they don't make these parts anymore trying to make me buy a brand new door and garage opener.thanks to this guy who made this video I bought the part for $50 bucks and installed it in like 30min..Problem solved.I bought a home that was built in 1965 and the door is still in great condition,so may be I can now get another 30yrs out of my door........THANKS DUDE!! Good video. I would just point out you don't need to remove the two nuts as shown, just the single nut to the right of them at the very end (door header bracket). And the switch can remain installed. Just press the switch lever up as you slide the carriage past it while holding the rail away from the wall a little as the carriage slides off the end (this assumes the power unit is suspended such that it will swing back away from the door a couple of inches).

This video was very helpful. Unfortunately i mis-diagnosed my issue. Ended buying a replacement carriage anyway but the issue was a coupler (example: www.amazon.com/Genie-Screw-Drive-Coupler-30257T/dp/B0006MZFGG). When I replaced the carriage, the screw stopped spinning which I didnt notice before. I thought it was the capacitor from watching other youtube vids and pulled and took it to a local garage door parts place. He told me it was probably the coupler not the capacitor because of the symptoms (motor was spinning but screw was not). Coupler stripping is a common problem. Saved a few bucks over buying a new capacitor i didnt need so be sure to check that too!

This was so helpful!! I spent like 12 bucks for the part and put it on with ease after watching this video!! How much did I save myself....over a hundred at least!!

FYI, this video shows a rail with a mechanical switch with the lever hanging down. There are models with a magnetic switch without the lever. If you have the magnetic version make sure the carriage has a magnetic on it. The magnetic version of the carriage has an "s" at the end of the model number (for example, #36179r.s ). This is just an example of a model number but yours might be different, but the "s" concept still applies. If you have the mechanical switch, then both will probably work as i believe the dimensions are the same and both will trigger the lever on the switch. Hope this helps!

Genie has already replaced that carriage FREE OF CHARGE twice for me as well as the MOTOR HEAD ASSEMBLY Once. I Paid Shipping Only! Genie is Amazing as far as their warranties are concerned and my unit was over 10 years old with no receipt!!!! The Carriage is the so Called "Sacrificial Lamb" as the metal screw on it is a much softer metal than the gear itself so that the cheap part brakes, before the man Worm or Screw Drive! As far as taking the Carriage off, often, there is not enough room between the end of the track and the header so it must be disconnected at the motor head which is where you must support one or the other and should have a hand or be ready to have some rope or wire on you. I could add more but that's enough for now!

worked like a charm, assembly was getting caught up exactly like yours, replaced in less than 2 minutes, of course the part took 4 days to arrive not to bad I suppose. No wonder Sears loses money they don't stock it, you have to order and it's $5 more than amazon..

Awesome video. One recommendation is to clean the track and the old carriage before you get started. Took 10 minutes to replace the carriage and 15 to clean my hands!
